To keep a product demo live overnight with OBS, build a scene that repeats reliably, connect OBS to the correct YouTube encoder event, and test the full stream before leaving it unattended. The computer, OBS, power, and internet connection must remain available throughout; YouTube and OBS do not guarantee an unattended stream. Use the checklist below to catch common failure points before you leave.

Choose what the stream will show

Start by deciding whether the demo needs to repeat identically or show a live product interaction. OBS can combine different kinds of input, but the looping behavior depends on the source you choose:

  • Prerecorded video: best when each cycle should be the same. Configure the selected media source to repeat using the controls available in your OBS version, then watch it reach the end and return to the beginning. Do not assume other source types loop the same way.
  • Live camera or product setup: appropriate when the demonstration must reflect a live device or physical product. It will not automatically repeat a prerecorded sequence; check that the camera, lighting, framing, and product remain as intended for the full run.
  • Computer capture: useful for a software demonstration. Close private material, disable notifications that could appear on screen, and verify the captured application returns to the intended opening state if you need a repeatable cycle.
  • Combined scene: use this when the demo needs a mix of sources, such as a product recording with a title or camera view. Confirm that transitions and audio behave correctly across a complete cycle.

OBS controls and labels can vary by version and source type. Verify the relevant source settings in the OBS documentation for your installed version rather than relying on a universal menu path. Before scheduling an overnight run, watch at least one full cycle and check that there is no unintended dialog, blank interval, or abrupt audio change.

Create the YouTube event and connect OBS

  1. Create or select the encoder stream: in YouTube Studio, create or choose the scheduled live event. Set its title, visibility, audience designation, and other event details before transmitting. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating and scheduling a stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key: YouTube provides the ingest address and the key used by the encoder. In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the values for the selected YouTube event. Follow YouTube’s current live stream settings guidance if you need to locate or manage them.
  3. Protect the key: treat it like a password. Do not show it in a public scene, screenshot, screen recording, or video. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream.
  4. Send a test signal and inspect YouTube: start OBS in advance, then look at the Live Control Room preview and stream status before the event begins. Confirm the correct scene and event are connected before making the stream public or leaving it running.

YouTube’s stream settings help notes that keys function like a stream’s password and address. Keep event privacy and audience-facing metadata intentional; connecting the encoder does not by itself confirm those choices are right.

Set quality to match sustained upload capacity

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate for the actual content and the connection that will carry it. Product footage with motion may need different settings from a mostly static screen demonstration. YouTube publishes recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate in its encoder settings and bitrate table; use the current table rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.

  • Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec.
  • YouTube recommends using RTMPS for encrypted ingestion where supported by the encoder.
  • Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static preview. A scene that looks fine while idle may behave differently during the actual demo.
  • Check that the selected bitrate fits the upload capacity available for the whole stream, not just a brief speed-test peak.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. Other people and devices using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. Its network streaming guidance warns that a connection disruption can break the stream. If the computer and router have Ethernet ports and a wired run is practical, Ethernet is a sensible way to avoid relying on a local Wi-Fi link; it cannot remedy insufficient ISP upload capacity, upstream congestion, power loss, or encoder misconfiguration.

Preflight before leaving the stream unattended

Set up well ahead of the start time and test the complete path: source to OBS, OBS to YouTube, and YouTube playback to a viewer. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend starting the encoder ahead of the event, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring quality, and verifying local archive files when a local copy is needed.

  1. Run the full demo cycle: confirm the scene starts correctly, reaches its end, and returns to the intended opening state. Check every transition and audio change.
  2. Check for accidental exposure: close unrelated windows and private tabs, hide sensitive desktop content, and prevent notifications or dialogs from appearing over the demonstration.
  3. Check audio for the whole run: listen for clipping, silence, unexpected loops, or changes in levels. Confirm that any microphone or system audio source is the one you intend to send.
  4. Start OBS early: send the encoder signal before the scheduled start where appropriate, and inspect the YouTube preview. Verify that the expected scene, audio, and event appear there.
  5. Review stream health: check YouTube’s status and metrics during the test, and respond to warnings before leaving. YouTube explains its indicators in live stream metrics help.
  6. Plan for power and network continuity: check that the computer will not sleep or shut down, that OBS will remain open, and that the network path is stable. A local battery backup may help with some brief power interruptions, but it does not keep the internet service running or guarantee stream continuity.
  7. Verify local recording if required: if you need your own copy, start a local recording and confirm the file is being created and growing. YouTube recommends checking that archive files are intact; a recording on the same computer is not a substitute for a separate backup.

YouTube suggests testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and checking whether playback switches to a backup. That applies only if you have actually configured a backup encoder path. A single OBS computer and connection do not provide this redundancy automatically.

Understand the 12-hour replay and archive caveat

Plan the length of the event before you start. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guidance, while its DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a complete rewind or assume a longer-than-12-hour broadcast will have the same archive behavior. Check the current event and archive settings, and save a local recording if you need a copy independent of YouTube’s archive.

Troubleshoot common overnight failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube preview is black or shows the wrong content OBS is sending a different scene, the source is unavailable, or the wrong event/key is selected. Check the active OBS scene and source visibility, confirm the event and stream settings, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
Stream health reports connection problems Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, the bitrate is too high for sustained capacity, or shared network use is reducing available bandwidth. Compare the encoder bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations, restore the recommended headroom, reduce quality settings if needed, and use a wired connection when practical. See YouTube’s network guidance.
The demo does not return to its opening state The chosen source or scene is not configured to repeat as intended, or the sequence relies on a manual action. Test a complete cycle in OBS and adjust the settings for that specific source and version. Do not leave a sequence that requires an unattended manual restart.
Audio becomes silent, distorted, or unexpected An audio source ended, levels are unsuitable, or the test did not include representative content. Play the full cycle with audio, check the intended OBS audio sources and levels, and listen to YouTube’s preview or a test playback.
OBS or the stream stops when left alone The computer slept, shut down, lost power or connectivity, or the encoder process ended. Review operating-system power behavior, OBS status, power, and network stability. YouTube cannot keep a disconnected encoder computer running.
Viewers cannot rewind the whole event or no full archive appears The stream ran longer than 12 hours, where DVR can be limited or unavailable; archive behavior also depends on YouTube’s documented limits and settings. Check the event duration and current YouTube archive status. Keep a local recording if a complete copy is important.
