A UPS can power equipment in your home, and a power bank can extend a phone’s battery—but neither can guarantee that your internet provider’s network will keep working. If the connection fails, switch to audio you prepared for offline listening or files stored locally.
What has to stay powered for YouTube radio to keep playing?
Follow the whole chain, not just the speaker: the playback device, any speaker that needs its own power, and the equipment that connects your home to the internet. Depending on your connection, that can include a modem, router, and optical network terminal (ONT). Modern fiber and cable services may rely on equipment at the subscriber’s premises that needs local power during a commercial outage, the Federal Communications Commission notes in FCC 15-98.
Even if you power every device in your home, the provider’s equipment and network farther upstream may be affected by the outage. Local backup power therefore improves your chances of staying connected; it does not guarantee uninterrupted internet service.
Will Wi-Fi work during a power outage?
Wi-Fi can work if the router stays powered, but Wi-Fi alone is not internet access. Your modem or ONT and the provider’s network also need to remain operational. A UPS connected to the necessary home equipment can help with the local power part. It cannot restore a provider connection that has gone down.

Before an outage, check which UPS outlets provide battery backup rather than surge protection only. Confirm that your modem, router, and any ONT that needs power can be connected, and test the intended setup under normal conditions. Choose capacity based on the equipment and the duration you need; actual runtime depends on the connected load and the specific backup unit, so there is no reliable generic runtime to assume.
How to prepare your YouTube listening setup
- List the equipment in the playback chain. Identify the phone, computer, or other player; powered speakers if you use them; and the modem, router, and ONT required for your connection.
- Charge portable devices. Charge your phone, power bank, and any rechargeable speaker before an outage. Ready.gov recommends keeping electronics charged and planning alternative charging methods in its power outage hazard information sheet.
- Prioritize what the UPS powers. Use battery-backed outlets for the networking equipment and playback device you need. Check device power requirements and the UPS specifications, then test that the setup works as intended.
- Prepare an offline fallback. Arrange audio files stored locally or content that YouTube makes available for offline download in your situation. Do not assume every video can be downloaded.
- Plan for longer outages. Consider how you will recharge devices and which loads matter most. If you use a generator, follow its instructions and the safety guidance below.
What to do when the power goes out
- Keep the essential equipment running. If your UPS has battery backup, use it for the network equipment and player needed to reach the stream.
- Reduce avoidable device use. On a phone, use a screen-off audio mode if supported and avoid unnecessary activity. Lowering screen brightness or turning off video may reduce device consumption, but the amount depends on the device and settings.
- Check the connection if playback stops. If home internet is unavailable, try cellular data or another independent connection only if it is available and working. A phone power bank can extend phone operation; it does not power your home modem or router.
- Switch to offline audio if there is no connection. Use eligible downloaded content or audio stored locally instead of expecting a live YouTube broadcast to keep playing without internet access.
Can you listen to YouTube offline or in the background?
YouTube’s mobile app background playback requires an eligible membership, and YouTube says some videos are unavailable for background playback or offline download. Its help pages describe these limits for background playback and Premium benefits. Availability can depend on the content and membership; check the current terms for your account and location.

Offline downloads are advance preparation for eligible content, not a way to preserve a live stream after the internet connection disappears. If you need listening to continue without any connection, use audio that is actually available on your device.
Power-bank and generator safety
Phone power banks
A compatible power bank can extend a phone’s operation for playback or mobile connectivity. It cannot power home networking equipment, and it cannot provide internet access by itself. Cellular data is a possible backup only where the mobile network is available and functioning.

Generators
Ready.gov advises operating generators outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings such as windows, doors, or garages. Follow the generator’s product instructions as well as this Ready.gov guidance; keeping entertainment running is never worth taking a safety risk.
