To keep live gaming on YouTube during a local power cut, back up power for the entire local setup—game system, encoder PC, and the modem or ONT and router—and make sure your internet connection itself remains available. A UPS or inverter can keep your equipment running only within its load and battery limits; it cannot guarantee that your ISP’s service will survive the outage. Record a local copy as well, so a broken stream or missing YouTube archive does not leave you without the VOD.
What has to stay powered?
Keep every device required to play, encode, and send the stream running. Depending on your setup, that may include:
- The gaming PC or console and the encoder PC, if separate.
- The modem or ONT and router that provide your internet connection.
- A capture device, display, or other hardware that your particular workflow needs to keep operating.
Back up the network equipment as well as the computer. A powered router does not prove the broadband service is still available: the ISP’s equipment or connection may also be affected. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (YouTube Help: recommended live encoder settings).
How to size backup power without guessing runtime
Choose a UPS or inverter based on the actual combined load and the amount of outage time you want to bridge. A VA rating alone is not a runtime estimate. Runtime depends on the equipment’s watt draw, battery capacity and condition, the specific UPS or inverter, and operating conditions; no single runtime applies to every gaming setup.

- Measure the load. Measure or estimate power draw while gaming and streaming, including the network devices and any essential capture equipment.
- Set a runtime target. Decide what outage window you want to cover. There is no single nationwide outage duration to use as a planning assumption: India’s Ministry of Power says electricity supply and distribution are within the purview of state governments and distribution utilities (Ministry of Power, March 23, 2026).
- Check model-specific data. Use the manufacturer’s runtime information at a load close to your measured watt draw, and check capacity, battery condition, and transfer behavior. Confirm the UPS or inverter is compatible with your PC power supply.
- Back up the complete chain. Connect every required local device, including the modem or ONT and router, to backup power.
- Test under gaming load. Simulate a power cut and check for unexpected restarts while playing and streaming. When safe and practical, test during an actual outage too.
A gaming UPS is a relevant product category for powering a gaming PC and network equipment, but a category page is not a model-level runtime comparison (CyberPower gaming UPS category). Compare individual models against your measured load and runtime target rather than assuming a generic number of hours.
Check that your internet can carry the stream
Power backup and internet backup are separate problems. First establish whether your fixed ISP connection continues to work during local outages. If it does not, mobile broadband may be a failover option, but only after you test its upload capacity and reliability from your location.

Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Its current guidance includes these examples:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate and notes that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your broadcast. Before going live, test with representative game motion and audio, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and confirm your planned bitrate is stable. If you use a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly (YouTube Help: recommended live encoder settings).
Protect the VOD with a local recording
Enable local recording in your streaming setup and check that the file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup (YouTube Help: archive live streams).

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Treat the platform archive as useful, not as your only copy; verify that your local recording is being saved successfully, especially for a long broadcast (YouTube Help: live streaming restrictions).

- The PC restarts when mains power drops: The backup may not support the combined gaming load, may not transfer cleanly, or may be incompatible with the PC power supply. Recheck the load and model-specific specifications, then test under gaming load.
- The PC stays on but YouTube loses the stream: Check whether the modem or ONT and router are also on backup power, then establish whether the ISP connection itself remains up. A powered router alone is not proof of an active internet path.
- The stream health deteriorates during play: Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec; check for the recommended 20% upload headroom and reduce competing network use.
- A mobile connection fails as a fallback: Test upload capacity and reliability at the actual location before relying on it for a live broadcast.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: Check the local recording. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived automatically, so the platform copy should not be the sole backup.
