To keep a recorded speedrun playing on YouTube Live overnight, send the video from an encoder connected to a YouTube Studio live stream. The simplest do-it-yourself setup is a computer running streaming software, with the recording selected as its source and set to repeat. For an unattended stream, a cloud service can run the uploaded video without leaving a computer on at home.
Choose how you will run the stream
For one overnight broadcast, an existing computer and software encoder such as OBS may be enough. The computer must stay powered on and connected to the internet for the stream to continue. If you need it to run without a computer at home, consider a cloud service instead; dedicated encoder hardware is another option for repeated scheduled broadcasts.
| Option | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo cloud service | Recorded YouTube video that should run continuously without a local computer | Upload and configure the video and stream key; check storage and plan duration |
| Existing computer plus software encoder, such as OBS | A one-off overnight stream or a creator willing to leave a computer running | Power, network, software stability, setup, and recovery after an interruption |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Repeated scheduled streams or a workflow where avoiding a computer is valuable | Purchase cost, media scheduling support, storage, controls, and recovery |
YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder page also lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams. It names Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video, but the cited YouTube page does not establish that its prerecorded speedrun workflow is equivalent. Confirm current capabilities and terms before choosing a third-party option. YouTube’s encoder overview describes these options.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the recording
Confirm live streaming is available
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility before planning an overnight broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.

Check the run, audio, and rights
- Use a finished recording with the full gameplay and audio you intend viewers to hear. Watch or inspect it for black frames, missing sections, unintended commentary, and abrupt endings.
- Make sure you have the rights to the game footage, music, and any other included material, or that your use is otherwise cleared. A recording of gameplay does not automatically clear its soundtrack or other copyrighted content.
- If you want the video to repeat continuously, configure the selected encoder or media player to loop the file. The exact control depends on the software; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not document OBS’s local-file loop steps, so verify the current instructions for your chosen software.
Create a YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Choose the intended title, audience settings, and visibility, then check that the broadcast page will be visible as intended.
- Open the stream’s encoder settings in YouTube Studio and copy the stream URL and stream key into your software encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection workflow.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Select the recorded speedrun as the encoder’s video source. Set the media player or software to repeat the file if you want the broadcast to continue after the recording ends.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Check that video and audio arrive correctly before starting the public broadcast. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming.
Set quality and test the connection
Test at the resolution and motion level of the actual speedrun. Fast movement, fine game detail, and HUD text can reveal compression problems that are easy to miss in a static test. Use a bitrate the upload connection can sustain steadily rather than selecting a high target the connection cannot maintain.
- Connection: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the stream URL and key provided for the stream.
- Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval.
- Bitrate: Test the available upload speed and choose a stable bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing rather than assuming the connection is suitable.
- Preview and health: Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before going live, then verify audio and video again after the broadcast starts.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current encoder guidance. A successful short test is not proof that a home connection or computer will stay reliable all night; consider how you will respond to power, network, or software failure.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube’s replay limits
A local computer and encoder can stop streaming if the computer loses power, the network drops, or the software closes. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, but its cited guidance does not promise automatic recovery from local equipment or connection failures. If you are relying on a local setup, plan how you will notice and restart it.
There is also a replay trade-off for long broadcasts: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete YouTube replay matters, plan an intentional stop and restart before the broadcast exceeds 12 hours, or keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams over 12 hours. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and DVR guidance cover these limits.

Troubleshoot common overnight-stream problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies. If live streaming was just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: Confirm the stream URL and key belong to the stream you created, check for accidental whitespace, and verify the encoder is connected. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- The preview is black or the video does not repeat: Confirm the recording is selected as the encoder’s source, then check the software’s media playback and loop controls. Looping is configured in the selected software, not by assuming YouTube will repeat a local file.
- Video stutters or drops frames: Check the upload connection and encoder load, then test a bitrate the connection can sustain. Review stream health in Live Control Room.
- Audio is missing or unexpectedly continues: Check the selected audio source, its levels, and the recording itself in the preview. Confirm that the file’s audio is intended for broadcast and cleared for use.
- The stream stops while unattended: Check for computer sleep, power loss, internet interruption, or encoder closure. A local setup needs an operator or a separate recovery plan; do not assume YouTube will restart it.
- The full overnight replay is missing: A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be archived. Use a local recording or keep each YouTube broadcast under that threshold if an archive is important.
