If your streaming software or the computer running it goes offline, it can no longer send video to YouTube. For a broadcast that must continue, prepare a second encoder for the same YouTube event and test that the player switches to its feed when the primary encoder stops. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help with a temporary connection drop while OBS is still running, but it cannot replace a stopped app or computer.
Choose a recovery method for the failure you have
| What failed | What to do | What it cannot fix |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary network interruption while OBS remains open | Use OBS automatic reconnect, then investigate the connection and bitrate. | It cannot run OBS if the app or host computer has stopped. |
| Primary encoder app or computer stopped | Start the backup encoder already configured for the same YouTube event, then verify its feed in the player. | A backup that shares the failed power, source, or internet connection may fail too. YouTube does not promise a universal switchover time. |
| Encoder cannot connect to YouTube | Check the server URL and current stream key in Live Control Room; update the encoder if the key changed. | This does not fix a local software crash or a general outbound internet outage. |
| Unstable feed or dropped frames | Check stream health and choose a bitrate suitable for a reliably available upload connection. | A lower bitrate can reduce picture quality; the result depends on the actual connection. |
For a true application failure, the most practical DIY safeguard is a second, prepared encoder—often on a separate computer—with a compatible feed and a working route to YouTube. A dedicated hardware encoder is another option for higher-production events, but it is not a universal fix and still needs an input and a functioning connection.
Prepare and test a backup encoder before the broadcast
1. Set up the YouTube event and protect its key
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and note its stream URL and key. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address: keep it private, and make sure the encoder configuration matches the event. If the key is compromised or reset, update the encoder. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
2. Configure the primary and backup
Set up both encoders for the same event and ensure the backup is ready to send a compatible feed. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours ahead and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees of a particular recovery time. Review YouTube’s encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If using OBS on another installation, you can export profiles for backup use. Profiles do not include scenes, so verify the scenes and the complete backup setup separately. OBS documents this in its profile guidance.
3. Test the actual player rollover
Before relying on the setup, start the feeds and check the preview in Live Control Room. Then stop the primary encoder—or, as YouTube suggests for a test, unplug its Ethernet cable—and confirm that the YouTube player rolls over to the backup. Also check stream availability and the integrity of any local archive. A running encoder indicator by itself does not prove viewers are receiving the intended feed. YouTube’s failover and operational tips describe this test.

4. Check quality against the real upload connection
Choose a bitrate and quality the upload connection can sustain reliably; test with representative motion and audio, and watch stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends selecting quality based on connection reliability and using its encoder settings recommendations. Verify the feed from the channel or watch page, including on a mobile device, rather than relying only on the local encoder preview.
What to do when the primary encoder fails
If OBS is still running but the connection dropped
OBS has an automatic reconnect setting for connection interruptions. Check that it is configured, then troubleshoot the link: OBS lists unstable internet, bitrate beyond the available connection, Wi-Fi, routers, cables, security software, VPNs, and drivers among possible causes. Its dropped-frame troubleshooting guide covers connection issues.

If the app or computer is offline
Automatic reconnect cannot help when the encoder process or its host is down. Start the preconfigured backup and confirm that the YouTube player receives its feed. The documented guidance does not establish a universal seamless transition or recovery time, so test the setup under realistic conditions before an important broadcast.
If the encoder will not connect or viewers cannot see the feed
Check the stream URL and current key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder configuration if the key was reset. If the encoder reports a healthy feed but the viewer experience is wrong, check the outbound internet connection as well. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers key and connection checks. After any change, verify the actual player and stream health.

Make the backup independent where possible
A second encoder helps only to the extent that it avoids the primary system’s failure. Consider which dependencies are shared: the video source, computer, power, network, and internet route. A second computer on the same failed power supply or internet connection may not provide continuity. YouTube’s failover guidance recommends testing the encoder handoff; it does not claim that a backup covers shared infrastructure failures or specify switchover time.
