To keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with prerecorded videos, send a looping playlist to YouTube Live through an encoder. You can run the encoder on a computer, use compatible streaming hardware, or host the stream in the cloud. Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, add its stream URL and key to your chosen setup, preview the incoming feed, then start and monitor the broadcast.

Choose how to run the continuous stream

YouTube Live receives an encoded feed; it does not continuously play a playlist from your channel by itself. Choose the setup that fits how much equipment and maintenance you want to manage.

Approach What it means What to plan for
Software encoder A compatible application on a computer sends a playlist or prerecorded program to YouTube Live. The computer, encoder, and network connection must keep working. Plan how to restart the feed and preserve a local recording if needed.
Streaming hardware A dedicated encoder can send a feed without relying on a general-purpose computer. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies the AJA HELO Plus and its optional PlayToStream feature for scheduled prerecorded playback. Check current model availability, compatibility, and whether its playback features suit your schedule before buying.
Cloud service A hosted service runs the encoder and prerecorded playlist remotely. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as an example for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Check the provider’s current workflow, cost, recovery behavior, and support for your intended setup. A cloud service can remove dependence on a computer at home, but no named service is a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

StreamNeo is another cloud option for keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, with any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Details are at StreamNeo.

Check channel eligibility before setup

Make sure the channel can livestream before configuring a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and belong to a creator who is at least 16 years old. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enabling the feature until launch day. Platform rules can change; consult YouTube’s current eligibility guidance for the channel.

Set up and start the prerecorded YouTube Live feed

  1. Enable livestreaming and verify access. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is available for the channel. If this is the first broadcast, allow time for activation and resolve any eligibility prompts.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live streaming workflow and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. YouTube documents stream configuration reuse and optional auto-start and auto-stop settings in its stream settings guidance. These controls do not prevent every interruption.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password. Enter it only in the encoder or service that will send your feed; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Load the prerecorded program. Add the video or playlist to software or hardware that supports continuous playback, or configure it in a hosted service designed for prerecorded live streams. Confirm that playback loops or follows the schedule you intend.
  5. Preview before going live. In YouTube Live Control Room, check that the incoming video and audio are correct. Start transmission from the encoder or hosted service, then confirm playback on the channel’s watch page and on a phone.
  6. Monitor the feed and its recovery path. Check stream health, picture, and sound after launch and periodically while it runs. For a local setup, decide who will restore the feed after a computer, encoder, or network interruption. Keep a local recording if preserving the program matters.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, and checking the preview, accessibility, mobile playback, and audio/video quality. For a continuous channel, treat those timings as launch-preparation guidance rather than a required schedule for every tool. The same tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; a shared or unstable connection can still interrupt a local feed.

Choose stream settings that suit the program

Use the encoder’s YouTube settings

For a basic setup, use the encoder’s YouTube preset and follow YouTube’s current requirements for the selected protocol. Do not copy settings intended for a different encoder or ingestion method without checking compatibility.

Decide whether viewers need DVR or low latency

YouTube’s stream settings let creators enable DVR, which allows viewers to pause and rewind, and offer latency choices with different interaction trade-offs. A prerecorded program with little or no real-time interaction may not need the lowest latency. This remains an encoder-originated livestream, not a Premiere.

Use HLS-specific requirements only for an HLS setup

If your encoder is configured for HLS, follow YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements. YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and supported codecs. HLS uses segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. These requirements are not a general checklist for every encoder workflow.

Plan for archives separately from the live broadcast

A continuous live feed is not guaranteed to become one complete YouTube replay. YouTube’s archive guidance says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive caveat, not a universal maximum runtime for livestreams.

If you need a recording, arrange a local or service-side backup and check that it is actually being saved. Do not rely on YouTube to produce a complete archive of a 24-hour broadcast.

Clear rights and understand monetization separately

Only stream material for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s livestream terms require live content to comply with the Community Guidelines and say creators must have necessary rights for live and archived content worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights. Using an encoder or cloud service does not grant permission to rebroadcast a song, video, or other person’s work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreaming and expect monetized work to be original and authentic. Highly repetitive or mass-produced content may not qualify; permission to reuse material alone does not ensure eligibility. Consider whether a channel built from old recordings, third-party footage, generic ambience, or repeated segments adds meaningful original creative, educational, or entertainment value under the current policy. Looping is not automatically prohibited, but it does not by itself establish monetization eligibility.

Troubleshoot common continuous-stream problems

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream URL shown in YouTube Studio and that the current stream key is entered correctly. If the key was reset, update the encoder.
  • The stream will not activate: Check channel verification, livestream access, and any restriction or activation notice in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • Playback stutters or drops: Check encoder and network status, reduce competing upload traffic, and make sure available upload bandwidth exceeds the stream’s total bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; it cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
  • There is video but no sound, or the wrong program is playing: Check the playlist selection, encoder audio source, and preview in Live Control Room before continuing the broadcast.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Use a separate recording plan when a complete copy matters.
  • The stream stops after a local computer or network problem: Restore the encoder and feed, and test the recovery procedure during setup. If the computer or home connection must not be responsible for keeping the channel live, use a cloud-hosted workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot; there is no re-encode or quality tier. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
