Start with the chat provider’s placement settings: move the launcher away from fixed page controls, then check the open chat panel and keyboard-open composer as separate states. If a floating widget still blocks important content, use an embedded layout that reserves space in the page, or choose a mobile overlay or popout mode when the provider supports it.
1. Identify the widget and its configuration
Before changing code, confirm which product and widget generation your site uses. A single vendor may offer legacy chat, a classic web widget, and a newer messaging widget, with different controls and APIs. Zendesk’s guidance, for example, separates configuration for Web Widget (Classic), legacy Chat, and newer messaging experiences. Do not assume a setting for one generation applies to another.
Check the embed snippet and the relevant vendor admin interface, then use settings documented for that integration. This is generally safer than trying to override the appearance of elements injected by the widget.
2. Move the launcher away from page controls
Adjust the widget’s side and offsets through its supported settings. Zendesk documents position and offset controls for its classic widget, including a support case where the widget covers other page buttons; its suggested resolution is to offset the button and window from the browser or mobile-app edge. For Zendesk’s newer messaging API, separate web and mobile horizontal and vertical offsets are available; use the mobile-specific controls when they are supported by your installation. The Messaging Web Widget API reference documents those options. For Classic, Zendesk documents position and offset settings in window.zESettings; those settings must be defined before the widget script loads. Refer to the Classic Web Widget setup documentation.
- Identify fixed elements the launcher must avoid, such as cookie controls, sticky navigation, checkout buttons, and accessibility controls.
- Check more than one page template. A single global offset may work on a product page but overlap a bottom bar or button elsewhere.
- Keep the launcher reachable; moving it clear of content should not push it off-screen or make it difficult to tap.
3. Decide whether the open chat should float or occupy page space
The launcher and the expanded conversation are different interface states. Moving the small launcher clear of a purchase button does not guarantee that the open panel will leave page content visible. Test the panel itself, particularly on pages where users need to read instructions or interact with controls while chatting.

Use embedded chat when the page must reserve room
If chat is central to a support page or dashboard, consider an embedded or in-flow presentation if your provider offers it. Zendesk’s embedded mode renders the widget in supplied HTML containers instead of automatically floating over the page, and adapts the widget to those containers’ dimensions. That lets the page layout allocate space for the conversation rather than relying on overlay positioning. See Zendesk’s embedded messaging documentation.
Choose mobile overlay or popout based on the task
Some vendors provide a mobile-specific choice between keeping chat over the current page and opening it separately. Zendesk Chat documents an overlay pane in the same tab that can be minimized, and a popout that opens in a new tab. The overlay keeps the visitor on the page but can cover it while open; the popout separates the conversation but requires switching tabs. These are Zendesk-specific options, not universal behavior. 4. Account for screen edges and the software keyboard
Safe-area padding handles device edges, not every collision
For controls you position near a viewport edge, CSS environment variables such as safe-area-inset-bottom can add padding for areas obscured by a non-rectangular screen edge or other viewport-occupying UI. MDN describes these values in its reference for CSS environment variables. They do not detect arbitrary page buttons, so they cannot replace choosing a suitable widget position.
Test the composer with the keyboard open
When a visitor focuses the chat composer, the on-screen keyboard may shrink the visual viewport while the layout viewport remains unchanged. A fixed composer that does not account for that difference can be hidden or awkward to use. MDN explains the distinction in its Visual Viewport API reference.

The VirtualKeyboard API can expose keyboard geometry through inset variables, but browser support and behavior vary. Treat it as a feature to detect and test, not an assumption about every mobile browser. See MDN’s VirtualKeyboard API documentation.

5. Validate the states that can overlap
Check the site on representative mobile browsers or real devices after making the change. Inspect the launcher closed, conversation open, and composer focused with the keyboard visible. Also check the page scrolled to the bottom with sticky, cookie, checkout, or navigation controls present.

- Check with browser controls expanded and collapsed, and with text zoom where relevant.
- Confirm visitors can still reach the launcher and dismiss or minimize the conversation.
- Repeat on page templates with different fixed controls; do not treat one successful page as proof that every layout is clear.
