Use PlayList for a small group of loaded inputs, or a List input for a sequence of videos that should play back-to-back or randomly. In vMix’s documented YouTube Live Stream Now workflow, finishing the stream in vMix also ends it on YouTube.
Choose the right vMix playback option
| Option | Best for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| PlayList | A small group of inputs already loaded in vMix | Plays the inputs back-to-back on a constant loop. |
| List | A longer video sequence, especially when loading every video at once could consume system resources | Plays videos back-to-back, can loop or randomize playback, and does not require loading all videos at once. |
| Time-of-day scheduling | Fixed programming blocks that start at specified times | vMix says it does not support time-of-day scheduling for 24/7 television programming; PlayList and List are basic continuous-playback alternatives. |
These features address continuous playback, not a clock-based broadcast schedule. vMix’s scheduling guidance was last updated January 17, 2025: How to schedule videos in vMix.
Set up continuous playback
Use PlayList for a small set of loaded inputs
- Load the video inputs you want to play in vMix.
- Open vMix PlayList and add the inputs in the order you want them to play.
- Enable the constant-loop playback behavior, then start the playlist. vMix will play the inputs back-to-back and repeat the sequence.
- Keep the vMix stream active. A video input finishing is not the same as stopping the broadcast: playback must continue with the next input or loop back to the beginning.
Use List for a video sequence
- Create or add a List input for the videos you want to play.
- Add the video files to the List in the desired order. This approach can avoid loading every video as a separate input at once, which vMix says can consume system resources.
- Set the List to loop for a repeating sequence, or enable randomize if you want its videos played in a randomized order.
- Start the List input and keep the YouTube stream running in vMix while it plays.
Exact control labels and click paths can differ by vMix version; the official guidance describes the playback behavior rather than prescribing a universal current UI path.
Keep the YouTube broadcast open
YouTube’s encoder guidance distinguishes stopping playback from ending a stream: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” The stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. In vMix’s documented YouTube Live Stream Now workflow, “Once you finish the stream in vMix, it will also automatically end in YouTube.” Therefore, let PlayList or List move between videos; do not finish the vMix stream unless you intend to end the YouTube broadcast as well.

To connect vMix, configure the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder workflow. YouTube also provides auto-start and auto-stop options in stream settings; check the current options and account-specific behavior in Live Control Room before relying on them. See YouTube: Go live with an encoder and YouTube: Manage your live stream settings. vMix’s Live Stream Now instructions were last updated March 16, 2021, so treat their automatic-end behavior as specific to that documented workflow.
What to do if the stream ends or playback stops
- The video ended and the output went blank: Check that the next input is in the PlayList or the next clip is in the List, and confirm the sequence is configured to continue or loop.
- The sequence played once and stopped: Enable the loop behavior for the PlayList or List. For List, verify that the intended videos are actually included.
- YouTube says the stream ended: Check whether the vMix stream was finished or the encoder stopped sending content. In the documented Live Stream Now workflow, finishing the vMix stream ends it on YouTube.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder feed: Verify the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the current Live Control Room workflow. The stream key must correspond to the stream you intend to send.
- Videos are not scheduled for particular hours: PlayList and List provide continuous sequential playback, not time-of-day scheduling; vMix says it does not support that scheduling model.
