To keep a Texas home cooler without running the air conditioner constantly, block direct sun before it heats rooms, reduce indoor heat, and open windows only when outdoor air is cooler and safe to breathe. Fans can make people feel more comfortable, but they do not lower room temperature. In dangerous indoor heat—especially for older adults, young children, or people with chronic conditions—use air conditioning or move to a cooled location rather than relying on passive measures.
Start by stopping sunlight from heating the rooms
Close blinds or drapes before direct morning or afternoon sun reaches a window. Shading the glass from outside is generally more effective at stopping heat before it enters: consider exterior shades, awnings, louvers, or solar screens for persistently sun-exposed windows. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends shading windows, and the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) lists solar screens among its weatherization measures.
If you are comparing window-shading options, check the window’s orientation and sun exposure, the product’s dimensions and fit, whether it interferes with opening the window or emergency egress, weather durability, installation needs, and cost. No particular brand or product performance rating is established here.
Open windows only when they can help
Keep windows closed when the outdoor air is hotter than the air inside. Open them in the cooler morning or evening only if outdoor air quality is acceptable, then close them again as the outside temperature rises. In Texas’s hot, humid conditions, bringing in outdoor air may offer little cooling and can add humidity.
#1 Best Overall
- 3-in-1 Portable Air Conditioner: Enjoy cool air (64°F- 90°F) during hot summer days, plus dehumidifier and fan modes for comfortable air circulation when temperatures are milder. Everything you need for year-round comfort in one AC unit
- Comfort Sleep Mode: Sleep mode and programmable 1-24 hour timer maintain your ideal room temperature automatically. Ultra-quiet operation below 50dB won't interrupt sleep, while two adjustable fan speeds let you customize airflow
- Quick Window Installation: Comes ready to install with exhaust hose and adjustable window kit that fits widths from 20.48 to 49 inches. No handyman skills required—set up completely in just minutes and start cooling immediately(for small windows, trimming may be necessary)
- No-hassle Maintenance: Advanced Self-evaporating operation effectively reduces the frequency of manual water draining. The washable filter captures dust effectively and slides out easily for quick cleaning whenever needed—keeping air fresher longer
- Room-to-Room Versatility: Lightweight with smooth-rolling casters, this compact AC moves effortlessly wherever cooling is needed. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages—any space up to 750 square feet
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) cautions that “ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates,” while noting that other approaches can reduce the need for air conditioning. That makes window ventilation conditional—not a substitute for cooling whenever the home is too hot.
Use fans for comfort, not to cool a room
A fan moves air across your skin and can help sweat evaporate, making you feel cooler. It does not reduce the temperature of the room. Use one while someone is in the room, and turn it off when the room is empty.
Rank #2
- Fast, Effective Cooling for Rooms Up to 750 Sq. Ft: This 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner provides rapid spot cooling for spaces like bedrooms, home offices, or apartments up to 750 sq. ft. It helps quickly dissipate indoor heat, keeping you comfortable even on the hottest summer days.

- User-Friendly Controls & Eco-Conscious Design: The clear LED control panel makes operation easy, with a programmable 24-hour timer and Sleep Mode for convenient, quiet nighttime use. Designed with eco-friendly refrigerant, this energy-efficient AC helps cool your space while minimizing energy consumption.
- Easy to Move with Rolling Casters & Side Handles: Compact and sleek, this unit features smooth-rolling wheels and ergonomic side handles, so you can effortlessly move it from room to room — wherever cooling is needed most.
- Quick No-Drill Window Installation: The package includes a remote control and a complete window installation kit with an adjustable exhaust hose and window panels. Fits most double-hung or sliding windows, requires no drilling, and can be set up in minutes — ideal for renters or temporary cooling needs.
EPA warns against relying on an electric fan in a closed room and says fans will not prevent heat illness when room temperatures are in the mid-90s°F or higher. At those temperatures, prioritize air conditioning or a cooled location instead of turning up the fan.
Reduce heat and cooling load indoors
- Turn off lights you do not need.
- Run heat-producing appliances, such as ovens or laundry equipment, in the morning or at night when possible. The Texas Department of Insurance also recommends shifting large-appliance use to those cooler periods.
- Check and replace HVAC filters monthly, as TDHCA recommends. The Texas Department of Insurance also advises checking filters, outdoor condenser coils, and drain lines; follow equipment guidance or contact a qualified technician if you are unsure how to inspect or maintain the system.
These steps reduce avoidable heat or help the cooling system operate as intended; they do not guarantee a particular reduction in AC runtime or utility bills. DOE says high-efficiency air conditioners combined with other actions to lower cooling costs can reduce air-conditioning energy use by 20–50 percent. That is a broad DOE statement, not a promised result for any one household measure or Texas home.

Follow a simple day-and-night routine
- Before sun reaches a room: close its blinds or drapes. Use exterior shading where strong sun repeatedly heats the same windows.
- During the hottest part of the day: keep windows shut if it is hotter outside than inside; limit unnecessary lighting and heat-producing appliance use.
- When outdoor air cools: open windows only if the air is cooler than indoors and local outdoor air quality is acceptable. Close them as conditions change.
- While using a room: use a fan for personal comfort, not as a replacement for air conditioning. Switch it off when the room is unoccupied.
- If indoor heat becomes unsafe: go to an air-conditioned home or public location, particularly if someone in the household is at higher risk.
Consider weatherization for longer-term improvements
For more than day-to-day shade and appliance changes, TDHCA lists storm windows or window sealing, weather-stripping exterior doors, attic, wall, or floor insulation, HVAC filter replacement, and solar screens as weatherization measures. Eligible households may be able to get help through the Weatherization Assistance Program. Use TDHCA’s Help for Texans page and select Weatherization, or call 2-1-1 to find a referral route. Eligibility and local provider availability need to be confirmed.

These measures can lower unwanted heat, but they cannot safely replace air conditioning in every Texas heat wave. Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) identifies older adults, young children, people with chronic diseases, and people without air conditioning as groups at higher risk from heat. If indoor conditions are dangerous or someone is vulnerable, prioritize a cooled indoor space. DSHS says to call 2-1-1 and select option 1 to locate cooling centers; the Texas Division of Emergency Management maintains a local cooling-center map. Check current local availability before traveling.

For heat-illness symptoms, EPA says to call 911. DSHS advises moving to shade, drinking water slowly, and seeking medical attention if symptoms do not improve. Check on older friends, neighbors, and family members during extreme heat, and follow a clinician’s advice for individual health conditions.
If a power outage forces you to rely on passive measures, use shading and ventilate only when outdoor air is cooler and acceptable. Never operate a fuel-powered portable generator indoors, in a garage, or in another enclosed area. EPA says generators should be outdoors and at least 20 feet from buildings.
