Check the encoder preview separately: a private setting controls who can watch, while the preview confirms that YouTube is receiving the feed.
Set the scheduled live stream to Private
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Create a new event or reuse settings, then edit its details.
- Set Visibility to Private and save.
- Return to the stream details and confirm that the saved visibility is still Private before sharing or starting the broadcast. Defaults can differ, so do not assume the event is private without checking.
YouTube provides public, private, and unlisted visibility options for live streams. The event’s visibility is the relevant control for limiting access; do not treat an encoder preview or an unshared event link as a substitute for checking it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Prepare the encoder and check the preview
- In YouTube Studio, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the event and enter them in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: it allows an encoder to send a feed to your YouTube channel.
- Allow time for setup. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Before the event, check the Live Control Room preview to confirm that the feed is arriving as expected. This check is separate from confirming that visibility is Private.
YouTube’s live streaming tips cover encoder preparation and preview checks. The privacy choice and encoder readiness are two independent checks: confirm both in Live Control Room.
Change visibility when the event should become public
If the intention is for everyone to watch at the event time, change the live stream’s visibility to Public in Live Control Room when appropriate, then begin or continue the broadcast as planned. Confirm the current visibility and event state in Studio before relying on a particular transition; YouTube’s help pages establish the visibility controls but do not spell out every interface transition for every prerecorded encoder workflow.

Private, Unlisted, or Public?
| Setting | Who can watch | Is it suitable before a restricted event? |
|---|---|---|
| Private | You and people you specifically select. | Yes, when access must be limited to selected people. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link; viewers can reshare it. | No, if only selected people should have access. |
| Public | Anyone; the stream may appear in search and on channel surfaces. | No, if the stream must remain restricted. |
These access distinctions are described in YouTube’s video privacy settings guidance. A private event is not the same as an unlisted event: an unlisted link is not an access restriction because recipients can pass it on.
Is this a scheduled live event or a scheduled video release?
Use a scheduled live stream when viewers should experience an encoder-based live event. If you only need an uploaded video to become public at a particular date and time, schedule the video’s publication instead. YouTube lets you schedule a private uploaded video to become public at a specified date, time, and time zone; that is a publication workflow, not an encoder-based live broadcast. YouTube also says the watch-page date for a public video is based on Pacific Standard Time, which can affect the displayed publication date. See YouTube’s scheduled publishing guidance.

Does Private hide the event and prevent reminders?
YouTube says scheduled streams may appear as upcoming and viewers may choose “Notify me,” but its cited guidance does not specify exactly how a private scheduled event is presented to people who are not invited or whether those people receive reminders. Check the event’s current visibility and presentation in Studio rather than assuming a particular reminder or discovery behavior.
Do you need special streaming equipment?
No special hardware is identified as necessary to set a stream to Private. YouTube describes software and hardware encoders as options and suggests professional hardware for higher-production events; the encoder choice does not replace the visibility check.

Troubleshoot before the scheduled start
- The event is not private: Open the scheduled stream’s details in Studio, set Visibility to Private, save, and verify the saved value before sharing or starting.
- The preview is missing: Check that the encoder is running and that it is using the stream URL and key for the intended event. Allow setup time and recheck the Live Control Room preview.
- A viewer with a link can watch: Check whether the stream is Unlisted rather than Private. Unlisted links can be watched and reshared; choose Private for access limited to you and selected viewers.
- You wanted a timed video release, not a live event: Schedule the uploaded video to become public at the desired date, time, and time zone instead of setting up an encoder-based stream.
