Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start by cleaning the robot’s sensors and checking that its bumper moves freely. Then choose a conservative edge-cleaning setting, if your model offers one, and add a no-go zone around any spot it keeps hitting. Light contact can be normal while a robot follows a wall; repeated forceful pushing or visible damage calls for a closer check.
Why a robot vacuum touches baseboards
Some robots follow edges closely so a side brush can sweep along them. Xiaomi says the S40 Pro uses a mechanical bumper and wall-detection sensors, and that light contact during edge-following can help it adjust its path. eufy similarly says boundary exploration on the Omni C30 Edge can result in occasional contact with furniture or baseboards. These are model-specific explanations, not a guarantee that every robot behaves the same way.
Contact may become more frequent when a robot has trouble reading its surroundings. Xiaomi notes that dark or reflective walls can reduce infrared or proximity-sensor accuracy, and that a robot may collide more while mapping initially or after being moved to a new environment. eufy says highly reflective metallic or pure black surfaces can weaken LiDAR echoes on the Omni C30 Edge. For that model only, eufy also says the robot may judge an area 5–11 cm above the floor as passable and make light contact; do not apply that measurement to other robots.
Trim geometry can matter, too. LG explains that an obstacle lower than the top-mounted LiDAR on its Cord Zero R5 may be detected by the front bumper instead. In general, a low projection can be harder for a sensor positioned higher on the robot to recognize in advance.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatibility: The soft bumper guard is compatible with iRobot Roomba i7, i3, s9, 500, 600, 700 and 800 series, as well as compatible with iRobot 675 and Neato robotic vacuum cleaners.
- Protection for furniture and vacuum: The bumper guard prevents the robot from damaging itself, protects furniture and reduces noise when the robot bumps into things.
- Dimensions and specifications: The bumper guard is 21 inches long, 0.8 inches wide and 0.2 inches thick. It is made of high-quality rubber that is both elastic and pressure-resistant. This means that it can be cut to any size to meet specific needs.
- Easy installation: The robot replacement parts are made of high-quality rubber, making them easy to install and replace as part of routine maintenance.
- How to use: The film of the robot vacuum blocker can be peeled off and applied directly, making it a convenient option for daily use and long-term applications.
What to do, in order
- Watch where and when contact happens. Note whether it occurs only during edge cleaning, near dark or reflective trim, at a low projecting edge, or repeatedly at the same mapped location. Those patterns can help distinguish ordinary edge-following from a local obstacle or sensor issue.
- Clean the relevant sensors and inspect the bumper. Follow the cleaning method in your robot’s manual and make sure nothing blocks the bumper. LG’s Cord Zero R5 guidance says to press the bumper and listen for a click as a basic check. Use your own model’s instructions; do not open the robot or remove internal parts based on generic advice.
- Choose a safer edge setting. Look in the app or manual for an edge distance or cleaning-intensity control. ECOVACS says its supported TruEdge 3.0 setting has a Standard mode intended to keep a safe distance from baseboards or obstacles, while Extreme mode cleans closer. If preventing scuffs is the priority, choose the more conservative distance; labels and behavior vary by model.
- Keep the robot away from the exact trouble spot. If your robot supports mapped exclusion zones, draw a no-go zone around the section it repeatedly hits. On the eufy C30 Edge, the documented path is Map Editing → No-Go Zone Settings. LG also recommends a ThinQ no-go zone for repeated collisions. App labels and availability differ across models.
- Clear nearby hazards and reassess. Move cords, hanging objects, and fragile decorations away from the wall or baseboard. If the robot still pushes hard after you clean the sensors, check the bumper and settings again, then contact the manufacturer for model-specific support.
When to use a barrier instead
A physical boundary can be useful when an app-based no-go zone is unavailable or unsuitable, but accessories are not universal. Vorwerk says some areas can be marked for Kobold VR200 and VR300 robots with magnetic strips. iRobot describes a Virtual Wall device with a mode for blocking an opening and a Halo mode for protecting an object or area; the cited overview says that device uses two AA batteries. Check the exact robot manual and current accessory compatibility before buying or placing a barrier.
| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| App no-go zone | Excludes a mapped section of floor from cleaning. | Your robot must support app-based mapping and exclusion zones; it will not clean inside the excluded area. |
| Magnetic strip | Marks a boundary for compatible robots, such as certain Kobold VR200/VR300 models. | Confirm that your exact model recognizes the strip and follow its placement instructions. |
| Virtual Wall or Halo barrier | Blocks an opening or protects a selected object or area on supported iRobot systems. | Check model compatibility and power needs; the cited iRobot overview specifies two AA batteries. |
Do not assume adhesive foam, weatherstripping, Velcro, or bumper tape is a safe universal fix. Added material could interfere with sensors or change how the bumper works, and no universal sensor-safe guard is established by the cited manufacturer guidance. Ask the manufacturer before attaching anything to the robot.

When contact may indicate a problem
Occasional light taps during edge cleaning can be part of normal operation. A repeated hard push, a bumper that does not move normally, or contact that continues after sensor cleaning and a conservative setting deserves model-specific troubleshooting. Check the manual and contact the manufacturer if the bumper check fails or you cannot identify a supported app setting or barrier.
