Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A Raspberry Pi’s screen going black does not necessarily mean the Pi or FFmpeg has gone to sleep. Match the fix to what stopped: turn off desktop or console screen blanking if only the display is blank, or use FFmpeg’s -nostdin option if a background job is suspended while checking terminal input. Neither fix resolves a network outage, power interruption, or YouTube ingest problem.
First identify what “sleeping” means
Check what you can still observe when the problem occurs. If the monitor goes blank but the stream carries on, it is a display setting. If the shell reports that FFmpeg is stopped or suspended, it may be an interactive-terminal input issue. If the Pi or stream actually stops responding, these two remedies do not establish or fix the cause.
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What the fix affects | Reboot required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graphical desktop monitor blanks; stream continues | Raspberry Pi OS desktop screen blanking | Display only | No |
| Text-only console monitor blanks | Kernel console blanking | Display only | Yes |
| Need to switch Wayland HDMI output off or on | wlr-randr |
Display output only | No |
| Shell shows FFmpeg stopped or suspended as a background job | FFmpeg console input handling | Process input handling | No |
If only the Raspberry Pi desktop display blanks
Raspberry Pi OS desktop screen blanking is separate from whether an FFmpeg stream is running. When blanking is enabled, Raspberry Pi documentation gives a default inactivity period of 600 seconds (10 minutes).
Turn off blanking in Control Centre
- Open the Raspberry Pi menu.
- Select Preferences → Control Centre → Display.
- Switch Screen Blanking off.
The menu labels can vary by installed Raspberry Pi OS release; check the controls on your system if they differ. See Raspberry Pi’s configuration documentation.

Use raspi-config instead
- Run
sudo raspi-configin a terminal. - Choose 2 Display Options → D2 Screen Blanking.
- Answer No to disable screen blanking.
If a text-only console monitor blanks
A text-only terminal uses kernel console blanking, not the desktop’s Screen Blanking control. Raspberry Pi documentation instructs users to add consoleblank=0 to prevent the console from blanking.
- Open
/boot/firmware/cmdline.txtwith an editor. - Append
consoleblank=0to the existing single line, separated from the other parameters by a space. - Save the file without splitting its contents across multiple lines, then reboot.
To inspect the current parameter, run cat /sys/module/kernel/parameters/consoleblank. The documented path is for current Raspberry Pi OS instructions; if it does not exist on your release, check that release’s documentation rather than assuming another path. If you want to switch a Wayland HDMI display off or on
Raspberry Pi documents wlr-randr as a way to control display output under Wayland. For HDMI0, use:
export WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1
wlr-randr --output HDMI-A-1 --off
To turn it on again:
export WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-1
wlr-randr --output HDMI-A-1 --on
This controls the display, not FFmpeg’s process state. If your output name or Wayland environment differs, identify the correct display and session rather than copying the HDMI0 example blindly. Source: Raspberry Pi display configuration documentation.

If FFmpeg is suspended as a background job
When FFmpeg is launched in the background from an interactive shell, it can be stopped while checking console input. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends -nostdin to prevent those input checks. Adapt the input and output to your existing command:
ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT
On Linux, redirecting standard input from /dev/null is another option when appropriate:

ffmpeg -i INPUT OUTPUT </dev/null
These are examples of the input-handling change, not complete YouTube streaming commands. Preserve the streaming arguments, credentials, and output settings you have already configured. This remedy addresses terminal-input suspension; it does not resolve system suspend, a dead connection, invalid YouTube credentials, or encoder overload. Source: FFmpeg FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the Pi or stream actually stops
If the monitor setting and background-job explanation do not match what you see, distinguish a stopped device from a stopped FFmpeg process or a failed YouTube stream before changing more settings. Check process state and logs, then investigate power, network connectivity, and stream ingest separately. The Raspberry Pi and FFmpeg guidance cited here establishes fixes for display blanking and terminal-input suspension, not a universal system-wide power-management fix or a specific cause of YouTube stream termination.

Offer Gigabit Ethernet and a PCIe interface, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE wireless capability. The RasTech Pi 5 Kit use the new 27W 5.1V 5A USB-C power connector.
- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Do not treat hdmi_blanking=1 as a universal FFmpeg keep-alive setting: Raspberry Pi’s legacy configuration reference describes it as controlling HDMI response to an operating-system DPMS standby request and says Raspberry Pi 4 does not switch off HDMI output with that setting. It concerns display standby, not process suspension. Likewise, Raspberry Pi’s “VPU sleep mode” wording appears in shutdown behavior instructions for when a supported Pi is turned off; it is not the first remedy for an FFmpeg job that has stopped. Sources: Raspberry Pi legacy configuration reference and Raspberry Pi shutdown behavior documentation.
