To keep a prerecorded church service streaming on YouTube, run FFmpeg as a foreground process on a Linux host and let systemd restart it after qualifying failures. Create the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, use the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that event, and verify YouTube’s preview and stream health—not just the service status. systemd can recover a failed encoder process; it cannot guarantee that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that viewers can see and hear it.
What this setup does—and what it cannot do
FFmpeg reads a prerecorded file and sends it to YouTube’s live ingestion service. systemd supervises FFmpeg as a long-running process and can restart it when it exits because of a qualifying failure. YouTube’s broadcast and the local encoder are separate systems: a service showing “active” does not establish that the event is live, accessible, or healthy for viewers.
The example below is a unit-file shape, not a tested drop-in. Adapt the command to your file, installed FFmpeg build, systemd version, stream settings, and Linux distribution. No single bitrate or resolution is right for every source and upload connection.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast and media
Create or select the event
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. You can prepare a scheduled stream in advance. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In the encoder settings, obtain the stream URL and stream key for that broadcast. For secure transport, select the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube rather than assuming an endpoint or copying one from an unrelated example. YouTube explains the process in its RTMPS instructions.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public support post, shell history, logs, or a unit file readable by other users.
Check the input and host
- Confirm that the service account can read the video file and that the path will remain available when the service starts at boot.
- Check the installed FFmpeg executable path and whether that build supports the selected output protocol. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection.
- Choose output settings the source can support and the host’s upload connection can sustain. YouTube advises testing with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health.
Choose compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the frame size and frame rate to the recording where practical, then select a bitrate appropriate to the file and available upload capacity.

Do not treat those options as a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or YouTube event accepts every combination. Confirm that your encoder supports the chosen codecs and settings. If YouTube reports connection trouble, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and check that outbound port 443 is available, as described in the YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. Google’s LiveStreams API reference also documents YouTube live-stream resources; for an ordinary encoder setup, use the Live Control Room workflow.
Build and test the FFmpeg command before automating it
First run a foreground FFmpeg command manually and inspect its output. The command’s input options, encoding options, and RTMPS destination depend on your source and FFmpeg build, so do not copy a generic bitrate or codec line without checking it. Supply the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key using a secret-handling method suitable for your host; avoid exposing the key in shell history or process output.

Once the manual run works, stop it cleanly and use the same validated command structure in the service. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground: systemd needs to supervise the actual long-running encoder process rather than a wrapper that exits immediately.
Create a systemd service
Save an adapted unit under a suitable name, for example /etc/systemd/system/church-stream.service. This illustrative structure intentionally leaves the FFmpeg arguments and credential delivery to be filled in for your system:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetReplace the example user, paths, executable, and bracketed arguments. Confirm the media is readable by User=stream. network-online.target expresses startup ordering; it does not prove that a route to YouTube is available or healthy.
Protect the stream key
Do not leave the key in a world-readable unit file. The systemd execution manual warns that environment variables are unsuitable for secrets and documents credential mechanisms including LoadCredential=, LoadCredentialEncrypted=, and SetCredentialEncrypted=. Their availability and exact use depend on your installed systemd version. Check the local manual and version before choosing a method, and ensure the FFmpeg invocation does not write the secret to logs.

Load, enable, and inspect the service
- After saving the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start it for a test with
sudo systemctl start church-stream.service. - Inspect process state with
sudo systemctl status church-stream.serviceand recent messages withsudo journalctl -u church-stream.service. Treat logs as sensitive if they could contain credentials. - When the service is ready to start at boot, enable it with
sudo systemctl enable church-stream.service. Choose boot behavior that fits the event schedule; enabling the service does not itself schedule or manage the YouTube event.
For a long-running service, Restart=on-failure and a delay such as RestartSec=10 provide a basic recovery policy. The example delay is an operator choice, not a YouTube requirement. Debian’s systemd.service documentation describes restart policies and start-rate limiting: repeated failures can eventually prevent further automatic starts until the underlying problem is addressed. Avoid using Restart=always casually for a finite input; a clean exit and an intentional stop have different implications under restart policies.
Test the actual viewer experience
- Run a rehearsal before the service is needed. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time and starting before the event.
- Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live. Confirm the expected picture, audio, and stream health.
- Verify that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and, where relevant, from the devices your congregation will use.
- Monitor the broadcast during the service. A running FFmpeg process or green systemd status is not a substitute for checking YouTube’s preview, health indicators, and the viewer-facing event.
- After the event ends, finish the YouTube broadcast through the operator workflow, then stop the encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preparation, monitoring, and wrap-up.
Troubleshoot failures by checking both sides
