Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallKeep the heat your greenhouse already has before adding more: close unused vents, fix drafts, and consider a well-fitted thermal curtain. Then check the overnight temperature beside your plants and set a target that suits the crop. If those steps cannot keep plants above their minimum temperature, add appropriately sized, greenhouse-rated heat with safe airflow and controls.
Reduce heat loss before adding heat
Night is the critical period: Virginia Cooperative Extension says up to 85% of greenhouse heat loss can occur at night. That figure describes greenhouse heat loss generally, not the savings a particular gardener should expect. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s greenhouse energy guidance recommends addressing heat loss before relying on more heat.
Close gaps without blocking necessary air
- Check that vents close tightly when they are not needed for ventilation.
- Repair or insulate unused fan openings and other avoidable gaps.
- Do not seal the greenhouse in a way that blocks required winter ventilation or a heater’s combustion air. Virginia Cooperative Extension warns: “WARNING: Do not inhibit the fresh air supply to the greenhouse heater.”
Consider a thermal blanket or energy screen
A thermal curtain or energy screen can reduce the amount of heat escaping through the greenhouse covering overnight. Virginia Cooperative Extension reports heat-retention blankets can reduce energy use by up to 50%, and combined thermal and shade blankets by 25% or more. UMass Extension reports 30–50% heating-cost savings for energy/shade screen systems. These are conditional estimates for systems and installations, not guaranteed savings for a small backyard greenhouse. UMass Extension’s energy-conservation guidance discusses the systems and their potential.
For a blanket, a close fit against the walls helps limit heat loss around the edges. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends porous material so condensation does not pool above plants, and flame-resistant material (or a suitable alternating material in growing structures). Keep heating or water lines below the blanket or insulate them, and open the curtain gradually over chill-sensitive crops.

Check the temperature where plants are
Place a maximum/minimum thermometer near the main plant area so you can see the actual overnight low. A heater’s own thermostat may not reflect conditions across the greenhouse: the Royal Horticultural Society notes that a thermostat close to a heater can be off by a few degrees. RHS greenhouse insulation guidance recommends monitoring temperature near plants.
Set the overnight target for the crop
There is no single suitable night temperature for every greenhouse plant. A lower setpoint may reduce energy use, but Virginia Cooperative Extension cautions that lower temperatures can affect growth and flowering and may increase disease problems. Use the crop’s temperature needs, rather than a generic greenhouse number, to decide whether heat is necessary.

Use thermal mass only where the design supports it
Water or sand can absorb heat during sunny hours and release it later, but thermal mass is most useful as part of a greenhouse designed to capture daytime solar heat; it is not a universal substitute for insulation or backup heat.
Water barrels in a passive-solar greenhouse
In a University of Georgia Cooperative Extension passive-solar design, water mass was placed along the north wall. Each full 55-gallon barrel weighed more than 450 pounds and was secured against shifting, so the structure and support must be suitable for that load. The 2024 report found no noticeable difference in growing-degree-day accumulation between the water- and sand-mass sections. UGA Extension’s 2024 passive-solar greenhouse report describes the design and comparison.

Underground heat storage
A different cold-climate approach, described by the University of Minnesota, moves solar-heated air underground and stores heat in insulated soil or rock. This is a designed system rather than a simple add-on to every backyard greenhouse. UMN’s deep-winter greenhouse guide explains the approach.
Add supplemental heat for the remaining need
If heat-loss reduction and the crop’s tolerance are not enough to maintain a safe temperature, use a greenhouse-specific heater with thermostatic control. RHS recommends electric fan heaters designed for greenhouse use and professional installation of electrical connections. Virginia Cooperative Extension emphasizes heating-system maintenance and adequate fresh air.

Heater capacity depends on greenhouse surface area, glazing, the outdoor design temperature, and the desired indoor temperature. The cited guidance does not establish one wattage that fits every greenhouse. A heater should be selected for the actual structure and local conditions, with its air supply and electrical or fuel requirements respected. An Ask Extension response addresses the related question of whether shade cloth can also help insulate overnight.
