To keep one church YouTube live player online between services, keep sending a valid video and audio feed to YouTube: leave the encoder running and loop a rights-cleared holding slate, announcements, or other approved content. If the encoder stops, the feed ends; schedule a separate upcoming event instead when a waiting page for the next service is sufficient.
Why YouTube shows an offline screen between loops
A YouTube encoder-based stream is live only while the encoder sends content. When a loop reaches its end and the source stops—or someone stops the encoder—YouTube no longer receives the feed. The ended broadcast does not stay live while the church prepares another event. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)
Keep these two YouTube concepts separate: the incoming stream is the feed from the encoder, while a broadcast is the event viewers watch. A scheduled event can have its own upcoming watch page; that page is not the previous broadcast continuing through the gap. Google’s API documentation describes a more advanced arrangement in which one incoming stream can support recurring events, including a 24/7 example with a continuous broadcast and a separate broadcast. Confirm that setup against your channel and encoder before relying on it.
Choose the right between-service experience
| Workflow | What viewers see between services | What the church must maintain | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast with loop or holding content | The same live player continues with the loop, announcements, or slate. | The source and encoder keep sending valid video and audio; someone monitors the stream and uses content the church has rights to stream. | One uninterrupted live player or permanent URL matters. |
| Separate scheduled broadcast for each service | An upcoming event page, countdown, or trailer, followed by the new live event. | Schedule each service, share its watch page, review stream settings, and start the encoder and broadcast as intended. | Services are distinct events and a waiting page is acceptable. |
| Continuous broadcast plus separate service broadcasts | An always-on feed as well as separately identifiable service broadcasts. | A more advanced stream-and-broadcast configuration. Test the channel and encoder together. | The church needs both a continuous presence and separate service events. |
Consider whether one URL matters, how much volunteer attention the setup needs, whether the stream must run unattended, how replays should be organized, and whether the church can maintain its encoder and network throughout the gap. No workflow can guarantee continuity through power, network, or YouTube-side interruptions.

Keep one broadcast live with a looping holding feed
- Prepare the between-service content. Create a loop that can run continuously: for example, a church-approved holding graphic with service times, announcements, or other rights-cleared video and audio. Make sure the loop does not reach an end state that stops output.
- Configure the source to repeat. In the church’s playback or production software, enable repeat/loop for the media source or playlist. The exact label varies by software. Confirm that both video and audio continue at the end-to-start transition.
- Keep the encoder sending to YouTube. Enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder as directed by YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Start the encoder and verify that its source keeps feeding the stream through the full gap. Do not stop the encoder between services if viewers are meant to remain in the same broadcast.
- Check content rights. Use only material the church has permission to stream, including music, video, and any trailer or loop audio. YouTube’s guidance specifically calls out rights for trailer audio and video; apply the same care to holding content.
- Rehearse the transition before sharing the public stream. Run the actual encoder and loop through at least one complete transition in a private or unlisted test. YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted stream privacy settings; choose the test visibility deliberately, then check the public event settings before announcing it.
If the source freezes, finishes, or stops producing audio/video, YouTube can lose the feed even if the encoder application still appears open. Watch the actual Live Control Room preview during testing rather than assuming that a playback window means viewers are receiving a live signal.
Schedule a separate event for each service
- Schedule the next service in YouTube Studio. Set its intended time and privacy, then share that event’s watch page with the congregation. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers can select “Notify me.”
- Decide whether to use a trailer. A trailer can play on the scheduled stream’s watch page before the live event starts. Treat it as waiting-page content, not as a continuous live broadcast. Use only audio and video the church has rights to stream.
- Review the stream key and start/stop behavior. Reusing settings copies the prior stream’s metadata, stream key, and settings. Check the key, privacy, Auto-start, and Auto-stop every time you reuse a setup. YouTube’s current instructions are in Manage live stream settings.
- Start the encoder and confirm the event goes live as intended. With Auto-start enabled, sending the feed can start the scheduled broadcast. With Auto-start off, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and use its Go Live control when ready. An incoming encoder feed and a live broadcast are not always the same state.
- End the event deliberately. Auto-stop affects how a broadcast responds when the encoder stops. Confirm the setting fits the church’s workflow, especially if settings were reused, and do not assume the previous event remains live after its feed ends.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a recommendation to run a broadcast up to that duration.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
More advanced: continuous feed with separate service broadcasts
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes recurring events that reuse one stream for broadcasts at different times, and gives a 24/7 example where one broadcast remains live while a second broadcast is started from the same incoming stream. This separates the continuous feed from individually identifiable service broadcasts, but it requires correct broadcast and stream configuration.
Do not assume that enabling a loop or reusing a stream key alone creates this arrangement. Verify the API workflow, encoder behavior, channel settings, and the exact viewer experience in a rehearsal. The Google API documentation is the source for this model; the church should validate its own implementation before depending on it.

Test and troubleshoot before a service
- The stream goes offline at the end of the video. The media source reached its end or stopped output. Enable looping or use a continuous holding source, then confirm that video and audio continue into the next cycle.
- The encoder is running, but YouTube shows no live broadcast. A feed arriving at YouTube does not necessarily mean the scheduled broadcast has started. Check the preview in Live Control Room; if Auto-start is off, select Go Live after confirming the correct scheduled event.
- The wrong event starts, or a reused setup behaves unexpectedly. Reused settings can include the previous stream key and other metadata. Confirm the scheduled event, privacy, stream key, Auto-start, and Auto-stop before sending the feed.
- Viewers see an upcoming page rather than an uninterrupted live player. That is expected when the previous broadcast has ended and the next one is scheduled separately. Keep the same broadcast live with a continuing feed if the same player must remain active.
- The holding video has a black screen or silence at the transition. The source may be restarting rather than continuously repeating. Test the actual transition and ensure the encoder receives valid video and audio across it.
- The stream drops despite a continuous source. Check the encoder, source, power, and network, then restore the feed and verify the broadcast state in Live Control Room. For an unattended or continuous system, assess dedicated encoder hardware or a qualified church AV integrator; hardware alone cannot prevent power, network, or platform interruptions.
- A replay is missing or different than expected. YouTube’s automatic archive note applies to streams under 12 hours. Check the event’s archive after it ends; do not treat the archive behavior as a substitute for planning separate service events.
An older community guide from the OBS Project also notes that a scheduled broadcast’s controls determine whether starting the feed takes the event live. Because interface labels can change, use YouTube’s current Studio and Live Control Room controls as the authority: OBS Project Forums: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio. Google’s Full Live Production guide also describes scheduling, starting the encoder, using Live Control Room, and ending a stream.
