To keep an Ubuntu-hosted YouTube stream running after a process failure or server reboot, run FFmpeg in the foreground as a systemd service, enable it at boot, and configure a measured restart delay. This supervises the local encoder; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube event, repair a bad stream key or input, or replace monitoring. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest address and current encoding guidance, and plan separately for the stream’s session and archive behavior.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
A systemd service can restart a failed FFmpeg process after a configured delay and start the service during boot. Its restart policy supervises the process on your Ubuntu host, not the entire path from media file to YouTube viewers.
- It can help with: restarting after certain process failures and starting the service when the system boots.
- It cannot fix: an invalid or revoked stream key, a missing or unreadable input, incorrect encoding options, a network outage, a host outage, or a YouTube-side problem.
- It does not prove the stream is live: a service can be active while FFmpeg is stuck, sending unusable media, or failing to reach the intended YouTube event.
Ubuntu Noble’s systemd manual documents Restart=on-failure and RestartSec=. Automatic retries are subject to systemd start-rate limits; repeated rapid failures may stop the service from retrying until the issue is addressed. [systemd.service manual]
Prepare the YouTube stream and encoding settings
Get the RTMPS address and protect the key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key for the event or stream you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. If the control room initially shows an RTMP address, use its option to reveal the RTMPS address. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so keep them out of public scripts, shell history, and logs. Choose a supported codec, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio and lists additional audio settings. Consult the live table for the codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination you plan to send: there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. [YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder]

These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your server’s upload capacity. Your outbound connection must sustain the selected bitrate, with practical headroom for network variation. Your host also needs enough capacity for the chosen input and encoding mode. Check YouTube’s current table before deployment because ingest guidance can change. Install and configure a systemd service
Run FFmpeg as the service’s foreground process so systemd can observe its exit status. The following unit is a template, not a universal tested FFmpeg command: replace the input and encoding arguments with options supported by your installed build and media. The credentials file must be root-controlled and have restrictive permissions; do not put a real key in a published or world-readable unit file. Validate that your chosen method of supplying credentials does not expose the key in logs or process-visible command arguments.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetReplace placeholders before starting the service. Confirm that the stream user exists, can read the input and required configuration, and can access any needed directories. The executable path, FFmpeg arguments, credential mechanism, and unit details must be checked against your Ubuntu release, installed FFmpeg build, and security requirements. The example’s ten-second delay is a starting point to evaluate, not a universal ideal or a guarantee of successful reconnection.

- Create the unit: save the adapted configuration as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. - Reload systemd and enable the service at boot:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service - Check the process and recent logs:
systemctl status youtube-stream.service journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager - Confirm the remote stream: check YouTube Live Control Room for a received preview and the intended event’s status. A successful systemd start alone does not confirm that viewers can see a working stream.
Restart=on-failure is for failures, not a substitute for choosing the intended behavior when an operator stops the service. If the process repeatedly exits quickly, inspect the logs and systemd’s start-rate limiting rather than assuming the retry loop will continue indefinitely. [systemd.service manual]
Plan for YouTube session boundaries separately
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior statement, not a promise that one event can remain live indefinitely, nor a systemd feature that creates a new event. Decide whether your goal is one scheduled event, repeated events, or a presentation that returns to a new event, and confirm the event, auto-start, and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. For a continuous channel presentation, verify both sides of the handoff: FFmpeg is sending media and YouTube is receiving it for the event you mean to run. The available YouTube guidance does not prescribe one universal event-handoff design for indefinite broadcasting.

Choose between a self-managed server and a cloud service
For a DIY server, weigh the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, YouTube bitrate recommendation, host encoding capacity, available upload bandwidth, recovery expectations, and operational cost. The required server size and retry delay depend on your media and setup; the cited systemd and YouTube guidance does not benchmark server sizes or prescribe one ideal retry interval.
