Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You cannot keep a stream uninterrupted while its VPS reboots: the reboot stops the encoder and cuts its feed to YouTube. You can make recovery automatic by running the encoder as a boot-enabled system service, configuring it to reconnect, and verifying that YouTube has resumed receiving the feed. This restores the stream after a gap; it does not guarantee zero interruption or return to the same live event.
What a VPS reboot does to a YouTube stream
A self-hosted encoder runs as a process on the VPS. When the server restarts, that process stops and its outbound feed is interrupted. A service manager can launch the encoder again after boot, but successful recovery also depends on the media source, network, stream key, and YouTube accepting the reconnection.
There are two separate outcomes to check: the encoder process is running, and YouTube is actually receiving a healthy feed. The first does not prove the second.
Set up automatic restart after boot
1. Run the encoder under a service manager
Do not rely on starting the encoder manually in an interactive SSH session. Configure it as a system-level service so it can be started at boot without an interactive login. The exact unit file and startup ordering depend on your VPS distribution, systemd version, encoder, and media source; there is no universal unit file established for every setup.

2. Enable boot startup, then start the service
With systemd, enabling a unit arranges for it to start through the relevant boot target. Starting it now is a separate action: starting alone does not arrange for future boot activation. Enable the unit for system boot and start it, then verify that it is enabled and starts successfully on your VPS.
3. Configure the source and YouTube connection
Provide the encoder with its media source, YouTube Live server URL, and stream key through the encoder’s configuration. YouTube describes a stream key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat it as a credential: restrict access to the configuration and reset the key if it is compromised. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys and provides a reset flow in its stream settings (YouTube stream settings).

- LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
4. Make reconnection possible
The service manager can relaunch a process, but it cannot ensure the network or YouTube ingest endpoint is ready when that process starts. Configure retries using the controls documented for your encoder, and test the retry behavior on the actual VPS. Retry options and appropriate delays vary by encoder; no single delay or flag is established for all setups.
5. Check YouTube after startup
After a planned reboot, inspect the service logs for startup or connection errors, then check the stream preview and health in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the viewer-facing watch page works. A service that appears active may still be sending no usable feed.

Choose stream settings that YouTube can ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check that the VPS can sustain the upload speed (YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance).
Enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder settings. For scheduled streams, YouTube’s workflow includes starting the encoder, waiting for the preview, and selecting Go live. Test the event settings you plan to use: the presence of auto-start and auto-stop controls does not establish that every interrupted encoder reconnect resumes the same event in every configuration (YouTube stream settings).

Test recovery instead of assuming it works
- Test a real reboot. Reboot the target VPS and confirm the service returns without an SSH session or manual command.
- Check both sides. Review the service logs, then verify preview and stream health in Live Control Room and playback on the watch page.
- Test a feed interruption separately. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet during a failover test, then checking that the player rolls to the backup encoder. This tests a configured backup path; a single encoder restarting is not itself proof of failover (YouTube live streaming tips).
- Repeat with the actual event workflow. Check whether the event requires a manual Go live action after the preview returns. Do not assume a reconnect restores the same event without testing.
Plan separately for 24/7 archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a guarantee that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one video. If preserving a complete archive matters, plan a separate recording or archiving workflow rather than relying on a single uninterrupted 24/7 event (YouTube encoder setup and archiving guidance).
Common recovery problems
- The service is not running after reboot: Check that the system-level unit is enabled for boot, not merely started manually. Review service logs for startup failures.
- The service is active but YouTube has no preview: Check that the media source is available, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Confirm recovery in Live Control Room rather than relying on the service status.
- The encoder starts before the network is ready: Configure encoder-specific reconnection or retry behavior and test it after reboot. The exact control depends on the encoder.
- The encoder reports a key or connection error: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for third-party encoders says to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. If the integration uses account login rather than a stream key, YouTube advises contacting the software vendor (YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
- The feed returns but the event does not resume as expected: Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and test that exact workflow. YouTube’s settings do not establish that every interruption will resume the same event automatically.
DIY on the VPS or a cloud-hosted stream?
Keeping the encoder on the VPS is a practical choice when you want to control the process and can accept a viewing interruption during reboot. Boot startup and retries reduce manual recovery work, but do not guarantee uninterrupted viewing. A managed cloud encoder or relay can separate the stream host from VPS maintenance; compare its recovery behavior, monitoring, media-source control, and cost, and verify provider capabilities before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
