If you mean listening to a YouTube playlist yourself, turn on the playlist’s Repeat control. If you mean broadcasting a 24/7 music livestream, the viewer-side Repeat button is not enough: your source software must loop the media and keep feeding an encoder connected to YouTube. Test that end-of-playlist handoff before relying on it.
Choose the kind of repeat you need
Repeat a playlist while you watch
On desktop, open a video from the playlist, expand the playlist, then click Loop in the playlist box. On a TV or game console, select Repeat until the control shows Playlist. This repeats playback for you; it does not configure a creator’s livestream encoder. YouTube Help: loop videos or playlists.
Keep a public livestream going
A broadcast follows a different path: a source supplies audio and video to an encoder, and the encoder sends that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. The playlist loop therefore needs to be configured in the source player or automation software, not assumed from YouTube’s viewer controls. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes connecting an encoder but does not specify one universal loop-playlist switch for third-party software. Set up and test a continuous music broadcast
- Pick a source-and-encoder workflow. A computer running media/source software and a software encoder gives you control over the playlist and broadcast. Dedicated hardware encoders may suit higher-production events; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for those events, but it is not a requirement for every creator. YouTube Help: live streaming tips.
- Configure the source to repeat. In the software that plays or schedules your media, enable its loop or repeat function for the playlist. The exact control depends on that software. Let the playlist reach its end during a private or unlisted test and confirm that the next item starts without stopping the feed. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not establish a universal setting for this step.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. In the encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Treat the stream key as a credential: it is what lets the encoder send your feed to your channel. YouTube Help: set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Check upload capacity. Compare your available upload bandwidth with the complete outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate; a connection disruption can break the stream. YouTube Help: live streaming tips.
- Monitor the full chain. Watch audio, video, network status, and the source software while live. YouTube recommends continuous audio/video quality monitoring. If you use a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary and confirming that playback rolls over to the backup. YouTube Help: live streaming tips.
- Set archive expectations. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are distinct archive and rewind caveats, not a statement that every stream is automatically stopped at 12 hours. Check current settings and behavior before promising viewers a replay. Choose an approach that can recover from interruptions

Troubleshoot a stream that stops at the playlist ending
- The broadcast ends when the last item finishes: The source may not be set to loop, or its playlist may have stopped. Enable repeat in the source software and test the transition before going live.
- The source loops, but YouTube loses the stream: Check that the encoder is still sending the feed and that the network has the recommended upload headroom. Review the Live Control Room preview and stream status.
- The encoder will not connect: Verify the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. Since the key authorizes the feed, avoid exposing it and replace it if it has been compromised.
- A backup setup does not take over: Test the failover path deliberately by stopping the primary encoder and confirming that the player moves to the backup. A configured backup that has not been tested may not deliver continuous playback.
- Viewers cannot rewind or find a replay: Check the stream’s duration and current archive/DVR behavior. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours and possible DVR rewind limitations on longer streams; neither guarantees that every long broadcast will have the replay behavior you want.
Music rights still apply to a continuous stream
Looping or uploading a track does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the music and any associated recordings before streaming. A continuous format does not itself resolve copyright questions; review YouTube’s current rules and the applicable rights for your material.
