If OBS closes unexpectedly, an external supervisor can reopen it—but that alone does not guarantee viewers see an uninterrupted stream or that YouTube resumes the same live broadcast. First distinguish an OBS crash from dropped frames or a network disconnect: the fixes are different. For a 24/7 kids’ stream, plan separately for encoder recovery, YouTube’s live-event behavior, and network stability.
First identify what failed
Look at OBS and the stream status before changing settings. An OBS crash means the program has closed or stopped responding. Dropped frames or an intermittent disconnect while OBS remains open usually point to the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, or to a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Repeated dropped frames can eventually lead to a disconnect. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide treats these as network problems, not proof that OBS itself crashed.
- OBS is closed: investigate application or system stability, then arrange process recovery.
- OBS is open but frames drop or the stream disconnects: troubleshoot upload capacity, ingest-server choice, and the network path.
- OBS reopened but the broadcast did not resume as intended: check the destination platform’s event and reconnect behavior. Relaunching OBS does not establish that the same live event will continue.
Make OBS recoverable without assuming recovery is seamless
A common approach is an external supervisor or operating-system restart policy that detects when the OBS process exits and launches it again. This is a process-recovery layer, not a complete broadcast watchdog: it cannot by itself verify that OBS is sending video, that the network is healthy, or that YouTube has resumed the intended event. The correct implementation depends on your operating system, OBS launch configuration, and YouTube workflow, so there is no safe universal set of task or service instructions.
Use OBS automation carefully
OBS Studio has included WebSocket by default since version 28. It provides an interface for external control and automation; it is not, by itself, a built-in crash watchdog or an end-to-end guarantee of recovery. Test the complete restart path
Before relying on unattended recovery, test what happens when OBS exits: whether it launches again, selects the intended scene and sources, reconnects to YouTube, and resumes the event viewers are meant to watch. Confirm the current behavior for your platform, event configuration, and encoder workflow. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a universal reconnect window or promise that a restarted process will restore the same live event.
If OBS stays open, troubleshoot dropped frames and disconnects
Work through the network path rather than treating an open-but-disconnected OBS window as a crash. OBS recommends trying another ingest server, lowering the bitrate to fit a stable upload speed, and checking software and hardware that may interfere with the connection.

- Test a different ingest server. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and choose another available server for the streaming service, then test the stream. Server choices and labels depend on the service.
- Set a sustainable bitrate. OBS’s suggested starting point is 75% of total upload speed—not a guarantee. Actual stable upload capacity and the platform’s limits matter. Measure the connection under the conditions in which the stream will run, and reduce bitrate if frames continue to drop. OBS Project gives the 75% starting point in its troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024.
- Prefer wired Ethernet where practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable may help connect a computer that currently streams over Wi-Fi, but it will not fix an OBS crash, an ISP routing fault, or inadequate upload capacity.
- Check network-path software and equipment. OBS identifies security software, VPNs, bundled network utilities, outdated network drivers, routers, modems, and other network hardware as possible contributors. Investigate changes or updates along the path, and contact your internet provider if OBS’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.
Verify YouTube’s live setup and kids’ audience settings
For a YouTube stream, encoder recovery and YouTube event behavior are separate concerns. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format to stream on YouTube, but the platform’s help guidance does not promise that restarting an encoder restores the same live broadcast. Check the current workflow for the specific event you use, including what viewers see after a reconnect.
Set the audience accurately in YouTube Studio for each live stream. YouTube says Made for Kids designation restricts features including live chat and notifications; do not change an audience designation to preserve those features. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also says the person live streaming must be at least 16 years old. The age requirement concerns the operator, not the audience. These requirements and event behavior should be checked against YouTube’s current rules before depending on unattended operation. A supervised local OBS setup may suit a channel that needs OBS scenes and controls and can maintain a reliable local machine and network. If the computer or its internet connection is the weak link, consider whether a cloud service or standalone hardware encoder better fits the operation. These are different architectures, not interchangeable crash fixes.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- OBS reopened, but the stream is not live: confirm OBS is using the intended stream key and configuration, then check YouTube Studio and the event workflow. Do not assume a process restart resumed the same broadcast.
- OBS is still open, but viewers see interruptions: inspect dropped frames and disconnect status, test another ingest server, and lower bitrate to suit stable upload capacity.
- The stream keeps disconnecting over Wi-Fi: test a wired connection, then investigate the router, modem, drivers, VPN, security software, and other network utilities.
- Automation can control OBS unexpectedly: secure OBS WebSocket with a password and review which external tools have access.
- A restart changes the kids’ stream setup: verify the YouTube event and audience designation in YouTube Studio; keep Made for Kids settings accurate even when they limit features.
No cited source provides a measured OBS crash rate, expected recovery time, uptime percentage, or comparative reliability figure for local OBS, cloud services, and hardware encoders.
