To join the Windows Insider Beta Channel, register for the Windows Insider Program, link that registered account in Windows 11 Settings, select Beta, then restart and check Windows Update for preview builds. Back up important files and plan how you would recover the PC first: preview software can be less stable than production Windows, and recovery may cause data loss.
Before you enroll: prepare for recovery
Insider builds are work in progress intended for people who want to try changes and send feedback through Feedback Hub. Microsoft says production builds are more stable; Insider builds are less stable, are not serviced in the same way, and eventually expire. Treat a preview PC as an evaluation device, not one you cannot afford to troubleshoot. Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program information explains the program.
- Back up important files and verify the copy. Some recovery choices can result in data loss. A separate external USB backup drive is one possible way to keep a copy; no particular drive is required.
- Know your recovery route. Review Windows recovery options and keep relevant installation or manufacturer recovery information available.
- Keep your BitLocker recovery key accessible. Some Windows Recovery Environment tools may ask for it on an encrypted device.
- Use a suitable test PC. Microsoft’s general Windows 11 minimums are a compatible processor at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB storage. These are OS minimums, not a guarantee that a specific preview will perform well. See Windows 11 system requirements.
- Decide how you will leave the program. Returning to the previous version is time-limited and is different from stopping future Insider builds.
How do I join the Windows Insider Beta Channel?
First register for the Windows Insider Program with the account you intend to use. Then enroll the Windows 11 device in Settings:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Select Get Started.
- Link the Microsoft account registered with the Windows Insider Program, following the on-screen prompts.
- Choose the Beta Channel when asked to select a channel.
- Review and accept the device agreements, then choose to restart now or later.
After the restart, the device is set to receive the selected channel’s builds. Menu wording may differ between Windows versions; the path above is for Windows 11.

How do I install Windows preview builds?
Once enrolled and restarted, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If a preview build is offered to the device, follow the prompts to download and install it, then restart if requested. The channel selection controls which selected Insider builds are offered; it does not guarantee a particular feature or arrival date. Use Feedback Hub to report issues or share feedback.
Can I go back after installing a preview build?
Windows provides a Go back option for a limited period after an upgrade—usually 10 days, according to Microsoft Support. The required rollback files must still be present. Going back can preserve personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes.

Rollback returns Windows to an earlier version or build; it does not remove the device from the Insider Program. The device may therefore receive another preview build.

Microsoft’s opt-out instructions apply when the PC is on a production build. Check the installed build at Settings > System > About or run winver. If the PC is on a production build, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, select Stop getting preview builds, and follow the instructions shown.

Stopping future preview builds and restoring the original operating system are separate actions. To restore the original OS, Microsoft advises backing up the information you want to keep and using the appropriate recovery image. Consult Microsoft’s Insider guidance for the applicable instructions.
