To enter the new DMZ Early Access, preorder or prepurchase any digital edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the platform where you will play. Activision says access begins Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (Pacific Time); the worldwide launch follows on October 23, 2026. Install Modern Warfare 4 or the Call of Duty game hub from your platform library, then open DMZ from inside that installation. A physical PS5 or Xbox Series X edition is not stated to include the early-access entitlement, so choose digital if playing on October 20 is important.
What you need to join DMZ Early Access
The entitlement is straightforward but platform-specific: the preorder must be for a digital Modern Warfare 4 edition purchased through the platform on which you intend to play. A digital Standard Edition and a digital Vault Edition both qualify. Buying the game on one platform does not automatically establish the same entitlement on another ecosystem.

Activision also says permanently banned Activision or Battle.net accounts may be unable to purchase or play online. Resolve account-status issues before buying, because a purchase cannot restore an account that is permanently ineligible.

The official store lists Windows, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo. Platform details published for the new mode identify Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud play, Battle.net, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. Cloud and regional availability can differ, so check the store page shown by your account rather than assuming every edition appears in every country.

- Nintendo: Nintendo Switch 2 is specifically identified; the Nintendo store listing is the authority for your region.
Xbox Play Anywhere purchases can provide access on both an Xbox console and Xbox PC, subject to Microsoft’s and Activision’s requirements. Do not assume that a purchase made in a different PC storefront grants the same store entitlement.
How to claim access step by step
- Choose your playing platform. Decide whether you will use PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net, Nintendo Switch 2 or another officially listed option. Make this choice first because the preorder benefit is attached to the purchasing platform.
- Select a digital edition. Open the platform’s authorized store and choose the digital Standard Edition or digital Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4. Both digital editions are listed as eligible for DMZ Early Access.
- Complete the preorder or prepurchase. Finish the transaction while signed in to the platform account you will use to play. Keep the order confirmation and make sure the store shows the correct edition and platform.
- Sign in to Activision. Launch the Call of Duty or Modern Warfare account flow, then create an Activision account or sign in to an existing one. Link the platform account when prompted. If the service requests a mobile number, complete that verification before launch.
- Install the game hub. When preload or installation becomes available, download Modern Warfare 4 or the Call of Duty installation package from your library. The exact package name can vary by storefront.
- Install required content. Allow the base game and any DMZ content packages offered by the installer to finish. Do not cancel a component labeled as required for online or texture-streaming content.
- Launch DMZ after the unlock. Open the installed Modern Warfare 4 or Call of Duty hub and select DMZ. If the mode remains locked, restart the game and platform client, confirm that you are using the purchasing account, and check for a service-status or rollout notice.
Activision cautions that actual availability and timing can change because of time zones, outages or operational changes. The published date is therefore a start target, not a promise of an identical local unlock minute for every player.
Downloading and installing on each platform
PlayStation 5
- Open the PlayStation Store or your Game Library.
- Find the Modern Warfare 4 title associated with your digital preorder.
- Select Download and allow the game hub and required content to install.
- Start the game from the PS5 home screen, sign in to Activision, and choose DMZ from the in-game menu once the early-access unlock is active.
If the title is missing, switch to the PS5 account that completed the purchase and use the library’s purchased or owned filter. A physical disc listing is not evidence that the digital early-access entitlement is attached to your account.

Xbox Series X|S
- Open My games & apps.
- Choose Full library, then All owned games.
- Select the Call of Duty or Modern Warfare 4 title.
- Choose Install, wait for required updates, and launch DMZ from the installed hub.
If you own an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase, use the same Microsoft account on the console and Xbox PC app. The entitlement still depends on the edition and storefront shown at purchase.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Find Modern Warfare 4 in the account that completed the prepurchase.
- Select Install and choose an available installation location.
- After installation and updates complete, launch the game and open DMZ from the hub.
Steam must be online for the entitlement check and for DMZ’s connected features. If the game is not listed, verify that the transaction completed on the same Steam account rather than a different family or shared account.
Battle.net
- Open the Battle.net client and select All Games.
- Choose Modern Warfare 4 or its Call of Duty listing.
- Select Install, then let the client apply updates and required online components.
- Launch the game and select DMZ after the access window opens.
A permanently banned Battle.net account may be ineligible for online play or purchase. Contacting support cannot be replaced by creating a second account when the platform’s rules prohibit that action.
Microsoft Store or Xbox PC app
- Open the Microsoft Store or Xbox app on Windows and sign in to the purchasing Microsoft account.
- Open the library and locate the owned Modern Warfare 4 title.
- Select the download or install control.
- Launch the installed game, complete Activision sign-in, and open DMZ.
PC security checks apply regardless of whether the Windows installation came from the Microsoft Store, Steam or Battle.net. Confirm that TPM 2.0 is enabled in firmware and that Secure Boot is enabled before troubleshooting the game client.
Nintendo Switch 2
- Open the Nintendo eShop or the console’s software library.
- Use the Nintendo account that purchased the digital edition to find the title.
- Select the download or install option and wait for the game and updates to finish.
- Start the game, link or sign in to Activision, and select DMZ when the mode is available for your region.
The Nintendo store listing controls regional availability and edition details. If the game does not appear, verify the Nintendo account, region and purchase status before deleting or reinstalling software.

Digital versus physical editions
Activision lists digital Standard and Vault Editions alongside physical editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X. The digital editions are explicitly associated with the preorder bonuses that include DMZ Early Access. The edition information does not state that the physical copies grant that benefit.

If October 20 access is a requirement, select a digital edition rather than relying on a physical preorder. A disc can still be appropriate for someone who only needs the full game at worldwide launch, but the available evidence does not establish the early-access benefit for that format.
When access starts and what the timing means
Activision’s published schedule places DMZ Early Access on October 20, 2026, Pacific Time, with the worldwide Modern Warfare 4 launch on October 23, 2026. The early-access period is therefore a benefit of the qualifying digital preorder, not a separate free weekend that begins for every account.
Do not convert the Pacific-time date into a guaranteed local clock time. Activision warns that time zones, outages, platform certification and other operational changes can affect the moment a player can connect. Keep the game updated, leave enough time for a large installation and patch, and check the official game or platform notice if the mode is still locked after the announced window begins.

Is the new DMZ free?
The new 2026 DMZ is presented as a mode inside Modern Warfare 4. The eligibility instructions require a digital Standard or Vault Edition preorder or prepurchase; they do not describe a standalone free download that grants the new mode without the game. In practical terms, plan to own a qualifying digital Modern Warfare 4 edition if you want DMZ Early Access.
This is different from the earlier Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta. Activision’s installation guidance described that older Beta as free to play, available either as part of a Modern Warfare II installation or as a standalone download from a platform store. That package is separate from the 2026 DMZ and does not unlock the new mode.

Both versions use the extraction-shooter idea, but they are not the same installation or entitlement. The official Modern Warfare 4 store description calls DMZ a living combat sandbox in which players can loot, fight, negotiate, betray opponents and extract, alone or with a squad. Xbox’s announcement adds changing weather, dynamic military objectives and moving hostile forces.

Installing the older Beta will not substitute for installing Modern Warfare 4. If your platform library shows both, select the 2026 Modern Warfare 4 title tied to your preorder.
Troubleshooting access and download problems
The game is not in my library
- Sign out and back in with the account that completed the digital purchase.
- Check the store’s purchased, owned or preorder section rather than searching only the general store.
- Confirm that you bought a digital edition, not a physical listing.
- On Xbox PC and console, verify that the Microsoft account is the same one used for the transaction. On Steam or Battle.net, check the corresponding client account.
- For Nintendo Switch 2, confirm the Nintendo account and regional eShop used for the purchase.
DMZ appears locked after installation
- Install every pending game and platform update.
- Close and relaunch the game hub and the platform client.
- Confirm that the Activision account is linked to the purchasing platform account.
- Check the official service notice for an outage or a changed rollout time.
- Do not install the old Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta expecting it to unlock the new mode.
The PC client reports a security requirement
Enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in your system firmware, then return to Windows and restart the game. The exact firmware menu names vary by motherboard manufacturer. Activision may enforce additional security measures, so meeting these two requirements does not guarantee that every PC configuration will pass automatically.
The game cannot connect
- Use a stable internet connection; DMZ requires continuous connectivity because of texture streaming.
- Restart the modem or router only after confirming that the platform service itself is online.
- Check that the Activision account is not requesting phone verification.
- Review the account status if you have received an enforcement notice. A permanent Activision or Battle.net ban can prevent online access or purchases.
The download is available but DMZ content is missing
Open the game’s content-management or installation screen and allow all components marked as required for online play. Then restart the hub so it can refresh the entitlement. Avoid deleting the entire installation until account, update and service checks are complete; reinstalling does not change which account owns the preorder.

- Digital Standard or Vault Edition purchased on the platform you will use.
- Correct platform account signed in and purchase visible in its library.
- Activision account created or linked.
- Mobile number added if the account flow requests one.
- Continuous internet connection available.
- On PC, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled.
- Modern Warfare 4 or the current Call of Duty hub installed, updated and showing the DMZ component.
- Enough local storage for the base installation and subsequent patches, as shown by your platform’s installer.
- You are checking the current official status notice rather than relying on an assumed local unlock hour.
Once those checks pass, launch the installed Modern Warfare 4 or Call of Duty hub and select DMZ. If access is still unavailable, the remaining cause is most likely a platform rollout, service interruption or account-entitlement issue rather than the old Beta’s installation.
