If the Teams desktop app won’t start, open the meeting invitation link in a desktop browser and choose Continue on this browser when prompted. Follow the meeting’s sign-in or guest-name prompt, check your camera and microphone settings, then select Join now. You do not always need to install the app, but the browser route cannot bypass the meeting’s account, verification, or organization access rules.

Open the original Teams meeting link from the calendar invitation or message in a desktop browser. Teams meetings are not supported in mobile web browsers, according to Microsoft’s meeting-joining guidance.

At the launch screen, select Continue on this browser if that option appears. Avoid the option that opens or downloads the app while troubleshooting the desktop app. Microsoft Support says, “You don’t need to install the Teams app to join the meeting” for the browser guest-joining route: Join a meeting without an account in Microsoft Teams.

Respond to the identity prompt. Depending on the meeting, you may be able to enter a name as a guest, or you may need to sign in with the work or school account the organizer expects. Some meetings also require email verification or a one-time code. Microsoft describes these differences in its guest-joining instructions and Teams meeting guidance.

On the pre-join screen, allow the browser to use your camera or microphone if you want them enabled, choose the intended devices, and select Join now. Camera and microphone access are browser site permissions; Microsoft provides device and permission troubleshooting guidance.

If Teams places you in a lobby, wait for the organizer to admit you. A browser join does not override meeting security or organizer policies.

What to expect from different meeting types
The exact buttons and sign-in flow depend on whether the meeting is from a work or school organization, a meeting that allows joining without an account, or Teams Free. Microsoft publishes separate instructions for these paths; follow the prompt for the meeting you actually received rather than assuming every invite supports guest access.

If “Continue on this browser” is missing or the join fails

No browser option appears: Reopen the invite link in a desktop browser. Microsoft’s guidance for unauthenticated work or school joining specifically names Edge or Chrome, while its broader web troubleshooting guidance lists Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox. Teams Free guidance also lists those four browsers. The supported choice can depend on the meeting and account; consult work or school troubleshooting or Teams Free joining guidance.

“Sign in to join this meeting” appears: Sign in with the work or school account required by the meeting. If you do not have access to that account, ask the organizer or your IT administrator whether guest access is allowed.

“Sign in with a different account to join this meeting” or an organization error appears: Try the account the invitation was sent to. The organizer’s organization may prevent joining from another account or organization. Microsoft explains these access limits in its Teams meeting troubleshooting page.

An email check or one-time code is requested: Complete the verification prompt, then return to the pre-join screen and select Join now.

You are waiting in a lobby: The organizer may have to admit you. If no one admits you, contact the organizer; Microsoft notes that an attendee left waiting in the lobby may eventually be removed.

The camera or microphone is unavailable: Check the browser’s site permissions for the Teams page, make sure the intended device is selected, then refresh after changing permissions. Some settings may be controlled by your IT administrator. See Microsoft’s device settings help.

The meeting page is slow or will not connect: Check whether other websites load and wait for connectivity to improve. Microsoft includes low connectivity among possible join problems; see meeting join troubleshooting and Microsoft’s reconnect guidance.

The invite does not contain a usable online link: Ask the organizer to confirm that the event is set up as a Teams meeting and to send a valid link.
Microsoft’s browser support and interface labels may change. The steps above reflect its published guidance checked on October 4, 2026; organization policies can also change what a particular attendee sees.
