The safest way to add semiconductor exposure without making an all-in AI bet is to treat chips as a value chain, not a single theme. Keep a broad-market or multi-sector core, use a measured semiconductor allocation as a satellite, and compare each fund’s business mix, top-holding overlap, index rules, costs, geography and risks before buying. A semiconductor ETF can spread company-specific risk while still leaving you heavily concentrated in one industry.
What “diversified semiconductor exposure” actually means
Semiconductors are the components that perform computation, store data, sense physical conditions and connect devices. The industry includes several business models with different customers, economics and failure points:
- Chip designers and fabless companies create processors, accelerators, communications chips and other products but outsource most manufacturing.
- Foundries manufacture chips designed by other companies. Their results depend on factory utilization, process technology, customer concentration and enormous capital spending.
- Integrated manufacturers design and fabricate some or all of their own products, combining design risk with factory risk.
- Memory producers sell dynamic random-access memory, NAND and related products. Pricing can move sharply when supply and demand fall out of balance.
- Analog, power and sensor companies serve industrial, automotive, energy, medical and consumer equipment. Their demand is often tied to physical products rather than only data-center construction.
- Networking and connectivity suppliers provide switching, optical, radio-frequency and other components that move data between systems.
- Equipment and materials companies sell lithography, deposition, testing, packaging, chemicals and other tools used to make chips. They are one step removed from end-market demand, but their orders can still be cyclical.
- Electronic-component businesses may be included in a semiconductor fund when they are closely related to chip manufacturing or supply.
Fidelity’s SEC-filed semiconductor-fund prospectus illustrates this broad definition: it covers companies engaged in the design, manufacture or sale of semiconductors and semiconductor equipment, along with related electronic-component and equipment businesses. A fund using that definition may own businesses whose revenue is only indirectly connected to artificial-intelligence accelerators.

Why a semiconductor ETF does not make a portfolio economy-wide diversified
Buying an ETF can reduce the risk that one company fails, misses a product launch or loses a customer. It does not automatically diversify you across industries. Investor.gov puts the limitation plainly: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).”
If your portfolio already contains broad-market funds, individual technology shares or an employer’s stock, adding a semiconductor ETF may increase the same underlying exposures. Two different ETFs can also own many of the same companies. Count holdings, compare the top positions and inspect each index methodology before assuming that a second fund adds meaningful diversification.
Industry concentration brings risks that a broad-market fund spreads more widely:
- Cyclicality: orders, utilization and chip prices can rise and fall with inventory cycles.
- Capital intensity: fabrication plants and equipment require large, long-lived investments. The Semiconductor Industry Association and Boston Consulting Group reported that industry research and development plus capital expenditure represented over 40% of global semiconductor sales in 2023.
- Supply-chain dependence: shortages, logistics interruptions, substrate constraints or a single-source supplier can affect several holdings at once.
- Geopolitical exposure: manufacturing locations, export controls, trade rules and cross-border customers can change the economics of a company or an entire segment.
- Valuation risk: a popular AI narrative can push a small group of companies to dominate a market-cap-weighted index.
State Street also warns that ETF shares fluctuate in market value and may trade above or below net asset value. That premium or discount is a separate trading risk from the operating performance of the companies inside the fund.
Use a core-and-satellite structure
A practical architecture is a broad-market or multi-sector core with semiconductor exposure as a satellite. The core supplies exposure to financials, health care, industrials, consumer businesses, utilities and other areas that may not move in lockstep with chip companies. The satellite lets you express a semiconductor view without making the theme the portfolio’s foundation.
Decide the satellite size from your whole balance sheet
There is no universally correct semiconductor percentage. The appropriate size depends on your existing holdings, time horizon, emergency-liquidity needs, income stability, debt, tax situation and ability to tolerate a prolonged drawdown. Someone whose workplace, income or individual-stock account is already tied to technology has a different risk capacity from someone with a diversified pension and no sector positions.
Instead of starting with a market headline, calculate your look-through exposure:

- List every fund and individual stock you own.
- Record each position’s current value and the semiconductor-related companies it holds.
- Add direct shares, sector funds and meaningful indirect exposure from broad funds.
- Stress-test the result for a large decline in the semiconductor sleeve and ask whether you could continue meeting near-term spending needs.
- Set a maximum satellite size you can maintain through a full industry cycle, then invest below that ceiling if your uncertainty is high.
That process produces a personal risk limit rather than a universal prescription. Revisit it when your income, liabilities or other concentrated positions change.
Choose how to add the satellite
A single broad semiconductor ETF is operationally simple. A basket of companies or funds spanning several roles gives you more control but requires more monitoring, tax lots and rebalancing. If you build a basket, deliberately include different business models rather than buying several names that all depend on the same AI data-center spending.
Compare index construction before comparing tickers
Two funds with “semiconductor” in their names can have very different outcomes because of how the index selects and weights holdings.
| Construction | How positions are sized | Potential benefit | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market-cap weighted | Larger companies receive larger weights. | Captures more of established winners and generally requires less turnover. | A successful AI-linked company can become large enough to dominate returns and risk. |
| Equal weighted | Eligible companies receive similar starting weights. | Spreads company-specific risk more evenly. | Can underweight the largest winners and usually needs more frequent rebalancing. |
| Capped | No company may exceed a specified index limit. | Places a formal ceiling on single-company dominance. | The cap can reduce exposure to a market leader and may create rebalancing turnover. |
| Sampled | The fund holds a representative subset rather than every index constituent. | Can reduce trading and operational costs while targeting index characteristics. | Holdings and performance may differ from the full index. |
| Actively managed | A manager chooses securities and weights. | Can intentionally balance designers, foundries, memory and equipment. | Results depend on decisions, fees, turnover and the manager’s process. |
Weighting is a trade-off, not a guarantee. An equal-weight fund can still be exposed to the same industry shock, while a market-cap fund can outperform when its largest holdings continue to lead. Read the current prospectus and index methodology rather than inferring construction from the fund’s name.

Top holding and top-ten weight
Start with the percentage assigned to the largest holding and the combined percentage of the ten largest. A fund with dozens of names can still be driven by a handful of companies. Record these figures on the date you evaluate the fund because prices and index rebalances change them.
Number of holdings and effective breadth
Count the holdings, then ask whether they represent genuinely different businesses. Forty companies that all sell into the same data-center buildout are less economically diverse than forty companies spread across industrial, automotive, consumer, communications and equipment demand.
As a dated reference, the State Street/SPDR prospectus reported 40 stocks in the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index as of July 31, 2025. That is a count of constituents on that date, not a promise that the fund is broadly diversified across the economy.

Overlap with what you already own
Create a simple overlap worksheet with one row per company and columns for each fund or account. Mark the percentage weight in each. Add the columns to see whether a new ETF merely increases your exposure to names you already hold. Pay special attention to the largest positions: overlap there matters more than overlap among tiny holdings.

Group holdings into designers, foundries, memory, analog and power, networking, equipment, materials and electronic components. Then note major end markets such as data centers, automotive, industrial, communications and consumer devices. A fund with multiple labels can still be dominated by one end market, so inspect the actual revenue descriptions in company filings when the fund factsheet is too brief.
Check the fund’s mandate and asset rules
Read the prospectus for the percentage the fund must invest in the index constituents, permitted cash, derivatives and non-U.S. securities. One State Street/SPDR 2025 prospectus says the fund generally invests at least 80% of total assets in securities comprising its index. The “generally” qualifier matters: the remaining assets and temporary exceptions can affect exposure.
Also check:
- How often the index rebalances and reconstitutes.
- Whether the fund uses full replication or sampling.
- Rules for adding or removing companies after mergers, spin-offs or other corporate actions.
- Whether the mandate includes equipment and electronic-component companies or focuses narrowly on chip manufacturers.
- How foreign listings, depositary receipts and currency exposure are handled.
These details explain why two funds tracking apparently similar themes can have different holdings and turnover.
Look beyond the United States
Semiconductor production and customers are distributed across several regions. A U.S.-listed fund may still own companies incorporated or listed elsewhere, and a fund restricted to one market may omit important foundries, memory producers or equipment suppliers.
For each candidate, record the geographic split by company domicile and, if available, by revenue. Then consider:
- Political and regulatory risk: export controls, tariffs, sanctions and industrial-policy changes can affect sales or access to technology.
- Currency risk: a non-U.S. holding can gain or lose in U.S.-dollar terms even when its local share price is unchanged.
- Market-access risk: foreign exchanges, depositary receipts and settlement systems have different trading hours and operational conventions.
- Customer concentration by region: a geographically diverse list of companies may still depend on one regional manufacturing hub or customer base.
Global exposure can broaden the opportunity set, but it does not remove geopolitical risk. Treat geography as a deliberate choice, not an incidental feature.

Compare total ownership costs, not just the expense ratio
The expense ratio is the recurring operating charge, but it is only one part of the cost. Before buying, compare:
- Expense ratio: the stated annual fund expense, subject to change under the prospectus.
- Bid-ask spread: the gap between the price available to buy and sell. A wider spread can matter for frequent or large trades.
- Premium or discount to net asset value: ETF shares can trade above or below the value of their underlying holdings, as State Street notes.
- Tracking difference: the gap between the fund’s return and its index after expenses and implementation effects.
- Turnover and taxes: rebalancing and corporate actions can create taxable distributions in a taxable account.
- Liquidity: average trading volume, creation-and-redemption activity and the ability to enter or exit without moving the market.
Use limit orders when appropriate, especially during volatile sessions or when spreads widen. Do not assume that a low expense ratio compensates for a concentrated index, poor tracking or costly execution.
A step-by-step buying process
- Define the job of the investment. Decide whether you want broad industry participation, a specific role such as equipment or memory, or a temporary tactical position. Write down the holding period and the maximum loss you could tolerate.
- Map existing exposure. Include individual shares, sector funds, employer stock and the semiconductor companies embedded in broad funds.
- Build a candidate list. Gather current prospectuses and factsheets for funds whose mandates match your desired business-model and geographic breadth.
- Read the holdings file. Note top holding, top-ten weight, number of holdings, business categories, domicile and overlap with your accounts.
- Read the index rules. Confirm market-cap, equal-weight, capped, sampled or active construction; rebalance dates; eligibility rules; and the minimum index-investment requirement.
- Calculate all-in trading cost. Compare expense ratio, spread, typical liquidity, premium or discount behavior and likely tax consequences for your account type.
- Set a purchase limit. Use your personal satellite ceiling and leave room for future rebalancing rather than committing the entire intended amount in one volatile session.
- Place and verify the order. Check the ticker, exchange, order type, limit price, estimated value and settlement details before submitting. After execution, confirm the fill and update your exposure worksheet.
- Document the reason. Record why the fund belongs in the portfolio, what would make you reduce it and which facts you will monitor.
How to avoid an AI-only portfolio inside a semiconductor fund
Separate AI revenue from AI narrative
Read company and fund disclosures for actual end markets, product categories and customer concentration. A company may benefit from AI spending without being an accelerator designer, while another may be marketed as an AI beneficiary despite limited current revenue from that market. Keep the distinction explicit in your notes.
Balance roles, not just company names
Pairing several accelerator designers can create the appearance of diversification while preserving one demand driver. A broader mix might include manufacturing, memory, networking, analog or power, and equipment. The goal is not to predict which role wins; it is to reduce dependence on one product cycle.
Watch correlation during stress
Different semiconductor roles can sell off together when investors cut cyclical or high-valuation exposures. Business-model breadth reduces idiosyncratic risk but cannot eliminate an industry-wide drawdown. Keep the broad-market core for that reason.
Rebalancing without turning the portfolio into a trading strategy
Choose a review schedule that matches your time horizon—many long-term investors use a periodic review rather than reacting to daily headlines. At each review, update:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Fund holdings, top-ten concentration and index methodology.
- Overlap with new purchases in other accounts.
- Geographic and currency exposure.
- Expense ratio, tracking difference, spreads and liquidity.
- Your own risk capacity, cash needs and employment exposure.
Rebalance when the satellite exceeds your written risk limit, when your circumstances change or when the fund’s mandate no longer matches your objective. Avoid selling solely because a headline predicts the next chip cycle; use the precommitted rule you wrote before buying.

Common mistakes and practical fixes
Mistake: assuming “40 holdings” means diversified
Fix: inspect top-ten weight, business-model groups and end-market concentration. The 40-stock figure reported for the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index on July 31, 2025 describes breadth within one sector, not exposure to the whole economy.
Mistake: buying two funds without checking overlap
Fix: compare current holdings and weights side by side. If the same large companies dominate both, choose the fund whose construction adds a distinct role or replace the duplicate.
Mistake: treating an equal-weight index as safer in every scenario
Fix: recognize that equal weighting limits single-company dominance but can underweight leaders, increase turnover and remain exposed to the same industry cycle.

Mistake: ignoring the core portfolio
Fix: calculate look-through exposure across all accounts before setting a semiconductor position size. A new ETF can turn an acceptable direct holding into an excessive sector bet.
Mistake: focusing only on headline growth
Fix: examine capital spending, inventory conditions, customer concentration, valuation and supply-chain dependencies. Industry growth and past performance do not guarantee future returns.
Mistake: using a market order in a stressed market
Fix: check the spread and premium or discount to net asset value, and consider a limit order when execution certainty allows.

- Does the fund still own the business roles I intended?
- Has one company or AI-linked subgroup become an outsized position?
- What percentage of my total portfolio is exposed to the same companies through other funds?
- Have geography, currency or export-control risks changed?
- Has the expense ratio, index rule, rebalance schedule or minimum-investment policy changed?
- Are spreads, liquidity or premium/discount behavior acceptable for my account and trade size?
- Can I tolerate a semiconductor downturn without selling to meet near-term obligations?

What the published evidence tells you—and what it does not
The available figures illustrate why careful sizing matters. The Semiconductor Industry Association and Boston Consulting Group reported that research and development plus capital expenditure exceeded 40% of global semiconductor sales in 2023, underscoring the industry’s unusually high investment requirements. State Street/SPDR reported 40 constituents in the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index as of July 31, 2025, and a 2025 prospectus said the fund generally invests at least 80% of total assets in index securities. None of these figures establishes a universally suitable portfolio allocation or predicts returns.
Investor.gov’s guidance is the broader principle: spreading investments across asset classes and industry sectors can help weakness in one area be offset by strength in another, but investors must inspect fund holdings and costs. A semiconductor position can complement a diversified portfolio; it should not be mistaken for the diversified portfolio itself.
