In YouTube Live Control Room, red means a critical stream-health error that may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow means a moderate error that may degrade quality. The color indicates severity, not the exact cause. Read the timestamped message beside the Health Indicator and follow its specific instructions.

What red and yellow stream health colors mean

Color YouTube’s meaning Possible effect What to do
Red Critical May inhibit the event from starting or cause viewers to have problems. Read the adjacent error message and correct the setting it identifies.
Yellow Moderate May cause degraded quality during the event. Read the adjacent message, then check the named encoder or connection setting.
Green YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not define a specific green threshold or provide a complete color legend. Do not infer a precise technical guarantee from the color alone. Use the available health messages and preview to assess the stream.

YouTube Help explains the red and yellow severity levels in its stream health troubleshooting guidance. The color alone does not identify the fault: the written error is the useful diagnostic.

How to read a stream-health warning

  1. Note the color and timestamp. The message appears next to the Health Indicator and records when the issue was seen.
  2. Read the full error text. YouTube says the message includes specific information and instructions. An error that has not been fixed continues to appear.
  3. Match the fix to the named setting. The warning may concern format or codec, bitrate, audio or video tracks, frame rate, keyframes, resolution, or matching primary and backup streams.
  4. Correct the setting, then monitor the indicator. Check whether the same timestamped error continues to recur and test the complete setup before an event.

Red deserves prompt attention, but it does not tell you which setting is wrong. Yellow is not necessarily a total interruption; it can signal reduced quality. In either case, diagnose from the written message rather than guessing from the color.

Common causes and how to fix them

Format, container, or codec warning

Check the encoder’s output format and the exact codec named in the warning. YouTube’s format summary directs streamers to H.264 video and AAC audio; its specific audio error examples also list AAC or MP3 as supported. Follow the precise message and the current YouTube encoder settings guidance, since the appropriate configuration depends on the stream and encoder.

Bitrate or bandwidth warning

Compare the configured bitrate with the guidance for your selected resolution and codec, then check available upload capacity. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the stream resolution or bitrate to an appropriate supported setting. YouTube’s error examples describe insufficient bandwidth as a reason to reduce the selected resolution.

Do not treat one bitrate as universal. In YouTube’s current encoder table, for example, 1080p at 30 fps lists 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264; 720p at 30 fps lists 6 Mbps and 8 Mbps, respectively. Values vary by codec and resolution, so use the table in the linked encoder guidance for your configuration.

Missing, multiple, or incorrectly configured audio/video tracks

Check that the encoder is sending the expected audio and video streams, with supported channel counts and settings. YouTube’s error examples also include interlaced video and frame rates that are too high. Correct the setting named by the warning rather than changing unrelated output options.

Keyframe-frequency warning

YouTube recommends sending a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly, then verify that its output matches YouTube’s current guidance. Keyframe problems can also be associated with buffering warnings.

Resolution warning

Make sure the input dimensions sent by the encoder match the ingestion resolution selected in Live Control Room. If they do not match, change the encoder output or the selected resolution so they agree.

Primary and backup stream mismatch

If you use a backup stream for failover, check that the primary and backup configurations match. YouTube identifies resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio settings among the settings that need to align.

Check upload capacity and test before going live

YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload capacity and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If sending primary and backup streams, allow capacity for both streams plus that additional headroom. These are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.

  • Test the complete setup before the event, using representative audio and movement.
  • Check the preview and monitor audio and video quality, not only the color indicator.
  • Compare your configured bitrate with the current YouTube guidance for the selected codec and resolution.
  • When a warning appears, act on its named setting and confirm that the error stops recurring.

See YouTube’s encoder settings and stream health troubleshooting pages for current recommendations and error-specific steps. Labels and recommended settings can change.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to play as a 24/7 live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not a fix for a particular red or yellow health warning. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
