To use Keil 8051 tools in the Silicon Labs IDE, set the project’s toolchain to Keil, verify the assembler, compiler, and linker paths, then build an absolute OMF-51 file. For source-level debugging, enable both compiler debug-information options. Silicon Labs documents this workflow for Silicon Labs IDE 1.90 and later with the Keil 8051 tools supplied in its kits; the instructions below are based on Application Note AN104, Revision 3.1 (January 2023).

What you need before configuring the project

Have the Silicon Labs IDE, a Silicon Labs 8051 project, and the Keil 8051 tools available on the computer. The IDE calls the Keil assembler, compiler, and linker through separate executable paths, so the preset alone is not enough if the tools are installed somewhere other than the default location.

AN104 covers Silicon Labs IDE Version 1.90 and later. Its documented default paths are for the evaluation tools included with Silicon Labs development kits; use the paths from your actual installation if they differ. See Silicon Labs AN104 for the application note.

Create the project and select Keil

  1. In the IDE, select Project → New Project. Choose a device family or start with a blank project.
  2. Add your source files. In the Project Window, add each file that should be part of the build, then save the project workspace.
  3. Open Project → Tool Chain Integration.
  4. Under Preset Name, choose Keil.

Project membership matters: a file that is merely open in the editor is not necessarily included when the entire project is built.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the assembler, compiler, and linker paths

In Project → Tool Chain Integration, confirm the executable path for each tool. AN104 lists these defaults for the evaluation tools included with Silicon Labs development kits:

Tool Default executable path in AN104
Assembler C:KeilC51BINA51.exe
Compiler C:KeilC51BINC51.exe
Linker C:KeilC51BINBL51.exe

If Keil is installed in another directory, browse to the matching executable for each field. A wrong path can make the IDE invoke an older or evaluation copy even when a different Keil installation is present.

Configure output for source-level debugging

  1. Open the compiler customization settings for the project and enable Include debug information.
  2. Enable Include Extended debug information as well.
  3. Open Project → Target Build Configuration and specify an absolute OMF file name for the build output.

AN104 identifies Intel OMF-51 absolute object output as the format that enables source-level debugging in the Silicon Labs IDE. The project manager’s default configuration enables object extensions and debug-record generation; the two compiler options above add the required debug information. See AN104’s setup details.

Build and download the project

In Project → Target Build Configuration, set the absolute OMF file name. Depending on your workflow, you can also enable these optional behaviors:

Use the correct Keil package and understand code-size limits

Code-size behavior depends on which Keil package is installed. AN104 describes the evaluation toolset included with Silicon Labs kits as initially limited to 2 kB of code and starting programs at code address 0x0800. It says registration removes the code limit and starts programs at 0x0000. The note describes registering through a Silicon Labs product key, installing the Keil license, and adding the resulting License ID Code (LIC) in μVision4.

That older evaluation-toolset description is not the same as the current offering described on Silicon Labs’ 8-bit 8051 Microcontroller Software Studio page. The page describes the Keil PK51 Developer’s Kit for Silicon Labs 8-bit MCUs and Studio as a free toolchain without a time or code-size limit, and lists 8-bit 8051 MCU SDK Version 4.3.1.0, dated February 2024. Confirm which package and license you have rather than assuming every installation has the same restriction.

AN104 says the Silicon Labs PK51 version is limited to Silicon Labs devices, includes μVision4 build support but not debugging, and can be used for commercial applications. Silicon Labs IDE can provide debugging for the integration described in the note. Tool support and available debug routes vary by device and package; the Silicon Labs software page separately describes a μVision debug driver for C8051F devices.

Fix an L250 code-size-limit error

If a full C51 installation still reports an L250 code-size limit, Keil’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the IDE’s tool paths first. Open Project → Tool Chain Integration and point the assembler, compiler, and linker fields to the intended Keil installation. If the error remains, verify that the Keil tools are licensed and that the PC’s LIC has been added. See Keil’s L250 code-size-limit guidance.

Find Silicon Labs examples

AN104 points to device-specific Keil source and include examples in C:SilabsMCUExamples. Examples are also included in Silicon Labs application notes. Check that an example targets your MCU family before adding its files to your project.

Silicon Labs IDE integration or Keil μVision?

These are different workflows, not interchangeable labels for the same setup. In the integration described by AN104, the Silicon Labs IDE provides project editing and debugging, while Keil tools supply assembly, compilation, and linking. μVision4 is included for build support with the Silicon Labs PK51 version described in the note, but not debugging. Device support and debug options depend on the selected tools and target MCU; consult the Keil C51 product overview and Silicon Labs’ tool information when choosing where to build or debug.
