To protect a high-value collectible figure, document what it is and what it is worth, then confirm in writing how your policy covers it while displayed, stored, and in transit. A standard homeowners or renters policy may cap coverage for valuables. For display, reduce theft and accidental damage with a stable, secure case, keep the figure out of direct sunlight, and avoid assuming one temperature or humidity setting suits every material.
Build a record of the figure before arranging coverage
Make an inventory entry that an insurer could use to identify the object and assess a claim. Keep the records somewhere separate from the display location, and retain copies of receipts and photographs.
- Record the maker, line or edition, model or edition identifiers, purchase date and price, and provenance where relevant.
- Photograph the figure clearly from multiple angles, including identifying marks, accessories, packaging if material to its value, and any existing damage.
- Note the condition and keep receipts, prior sales records, and other evidence relevant to its current value.
- Ask the insurer whether it requires a formal appraisal, which appraisers it accepts, how recent the appraisal must be, and when it expects the value to be updated.
Appraisal rules differ by provider. Liberty Mutual’s 2026 consumer guidance says an appraisal is usually completed within the last five years for valuables; Chubb’s U.S. collections page, accessed in 2026, says its described offering requires appraisals for individual collectibles valued at $100,000 or more. These are provider-specific statements, not universal requirements. See Liberty Mutual’s guidance on coverage for valuables and Chubb U.S. collections coverage.
Find out what your home policy actually covers
Start with the insurer that holds your homeowners or renters policy. Ask whether a collectible figure falls within a covered valuables category, what limit applies, and whether a scheduled endorsement or separate policy is available. Liberty Mutual says standard homeowners coverage for valuables is typically subject to a set sublimit, but your own declarations and endorsements determine your coverage. Request the relevant wording rather than relying on a general description: Liberty Mutual: coverage for valuables.

If the existing limit or terms are inadequate, compare an endorsement with specialist collectibles or fine-art cover. Providers’ products, eligibility rules, and availability depend on jurisdiction and policy terms. For example, Chubb U.S. describes individualized personal collections coverage, while Chubb UK describes bespoke fine-art cover for objects in storage, transit, or on display. Those descriptions do not establish that the same terms are available everywhere: Chubb U.S. collections and Chubb UK fine-art insurance.

Ask the insurer or broker to point to the relevant policy clauses. A marketing page cannot establish how a particular loss will be handled. Compare the following before choosing coverage:

| Policy question | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Where and when is it covered? | Whether coverage applies while the figure is on display, in storage, and in transit, and which territory the policy covers. |
| How is a total loss valued? | Whether settlement is based on agreed value, replacement value, or market value, and what evidence is needed to establish that value. |
| What happens after partial damage? | Whether the policy addresses repair costs and any loss in value after repair. Aon identifies replacement value versus fair market value and partial-damage loss of value as questions collectors should raise: Aon’s fine-art practice. |
| What limits and costs apply? | The figure’s applicable limit or sublimit, deductible or excess, and any per-item or category cap. |
| What is excluded? | Read exclusions for gradual deterioration, light, humidity, temperature, and other relevant causes; check whether exceptions depend on a specified event. |
| What documentation is required? | Confirm appraisal standards, record-keeping requirements, and any deadline to report damage or loss. |
Exclusions can matter as much as the coverage grant. Arch’s distributor-facing product summary describes physical loss or damage subject to bespoke limits and excesses, while listing gradual deterioration and some losses associated with humidity, light, and temperature among exclusions unless a specified cause applies. That summary is not a policy quote and should not be generalized to other insurers. Review the applicable wording: Arch’s fine-art and collectibles product document.
Ask a licensed insurer or broker in your jurisdiction to explain wording you cannot resolve. Collections Trust notes that insurance planning may involve valuation, security, conservation, and insurance advice: Collections Trust’s Spectrum insurance and indemnity procedure.

Display the figure to reduce theft and physical damage
Choose a stable location away from direct sunlight, heat sources, water, and repeated vibration or impact. Secure the figure or use a secure exhibition case to reduce theft, vandalism, accidental bumps, and falls. The Library of Congress advises using secure cases for exhibition and avoiding sunlight for light-sensitive items because it is intense, has high UV levels, and is difficult to control: Library of Congress Collections Care guidance.
Choose a case that fits without pressing on the figure and allows safe access for inspection and dusting. Stability matters: position the case so it is unlikely to be knocked over, and secure it or the figure where appropriate. If selecting case materials for a sensitive object, do not assume a generic retail case meets museum conservation criteria. The Library of Congress recommends chemically inert construction and trimming materials for collection cases and references Oddy testing or the photographic activity test (PAT), ISO 18916.

Control light without treating UV protection as a cure-all
Keep the figure away from direct sunlight. If UV from a light source cannot be eliminated, UV-absorbing glazing can block that portion of the exposure, but it does not prevent damage from visible light. Reduce both the light’s intensity and the time the figure is exposed; a UV-protective case is not a reason to leave a collectible under bright light for long periods. Check the glazing specification rather than assuming a case offers UV protection. The Library of Congress discusses sunlight, UV, and visible-light exposure in its collections care guidance.

There is no universal household temperature or relative-humidity target for an unidentified figure. Suitable conditions depend on its materials and condition as well as local climate, acclimatization, and the building. Museum guidance from the Department of the Interior is not a figure-specific household prescription; it calls for environmental ranges to account for those factors. Keep conditions stable, and seek advice from a conservator familiar with plastics and mixed-media objects if the figure contains sensitive or mixed materials: Department of the Interior museum directive and Library of Congress Collections Care guidance.

The available guidance does not provide figure-specific cleaning instructions, so avoid improvised cleaning or treatment.
