To install wkhtmltopdf with patched Qt, choose the upstream package that matches your operating-system release and CPU architecture, then verify that the installed executable identifies its patched-Qt build. This matters when you rely on features that are not available in many distribution-compiled packages, including some header and footer behavior. The stable upstream series is 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020; the project distributes platform-specific installers and packages through GitHub releases.
What patched Qt means—and why package choice matters
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source, LGPLv3 command-line tool that renders HTML to PDF. Its companion, wkhtmltoimage, renders HTML to image formats. Both use Qt WebKit and can run headlessly, without a display service.
The wkhtmltopdf project explains that some features require its patched Qt because those changes have not been incorporated upstream. Many Linux distribution packages are compiled without the wkhtmltopdf patches. As a result, a distribution package can behave differently from an upstream patched build even if it uses a newer web engine or satisfies a package manager dependency.
If an application depends on patched-Qt behavior—for example, a particular header or footer feature—install a matching upstream package rather than assuming that any package named wkhtmltopdf is equivalent. Record the version and package source used by your application so deployments can be reproduced.

Choose the right installer or package
Start with the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page and select the package for both your operating-system release and CPU architecture. The project lists Windows 32-bit and 64-bit installers for Vista or later; a 64-bit macOS installer for macOS 10.7 or later; and distribution-specific Linux packages for Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, CentOS, Amazon Linux, openSUSE, and Arch Linux. Linux packages have architecture choices, so match the target machine rather than downloading the first available file.
| Installation choice | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream package or installer | You need patched-Qt behavior or want the project’s published build for your platform. | Exact OS release, architecture, and whether the executable reports patched Qt. |
| Distribution repository package | You prioritize integration with the distribution’s dependency management and can accept its build behavior. | Whether the package includes the patches your application requires; package names and versions alone do not establish this. |
| Custom build | You maintain a target not covered by a suitable published package or need a controlled build environment. | Build reproducibility, patched Qt requirements, target libraries, and maintenance responsibility. |
For example, Ubuntu Jammy publishes a wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-2 package with Qt 5 dependencies. That version string does not by itself establish that it includes wkhtmltopdf’s patched Qt features. Check the executable and test the exact feature your application uses.
Install on your operating system
1. Identify the operating system and architecture
On Linux, check the distribution release and architecture before choosing a package. Run:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
uname -m reports the machine architecture; compare it with the architecture offered for the selected package. On Windows, use System Information to check the system type. On macOS, check About This Mac and confirm that the machine meets the listed 64-bit installer requirements.

2. Download the matching upstream package
Open the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page and select the installer or package for the OS release and architecture you identified. The project’s official binaries are linked to GitHub releases. Avoid treating a package for another distribution or release as interchangeable: Linux system-library versions differ.
3. Run the platform installer
- Windows: Run the matching 32-bit or 64-bit installer for the machine. When installation finishes, open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window and verify the command is available.
- macOS: Open the listed 64-bit installer on a supported system. If the command is not found afterward, open a new terminal and check whether the installer placed the executable in a directory on your
PATH. - Debian or Ubuntu: Download the matching
.debpackage. Install it with the distribution package manager so dependency handling is part of the installation. For example, from the directory containing the downloaded file, runsudo apt install ./<package-file>.deb, replacing the filename with the actual downloaded package.
The project notes that a package that cannot be installed can be extracted manually, but extraction does not install missing dependencies. Prefer the package-manager installation where possible; if you extract manually, identify and install the required libraries for that target system rather than assuming the extracted executable is self-contained.
4. For an unlisted Linux distribution
Do not assume a generic Linux binary will work across distributions. Prefer a supported long-term-support build where appropriate, or consult the packaging project about the target. The packaging repository documents Docker and Vagrant workflows for maintainers who need to build for a custom target; ordinary users should generally use a published matching package rather than taking on that build process.
Verify the version and patched-Qt status
Run this in a terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell:

wkhtmltopdf --version
Record the complete output. Look for wording that identifies patched Qt; a plain version number such as 0.12.6 is not sufficient evidence of that status. If the command is missing, confirm installation completed and that the executable’s directory is on PATH. If the output does not identify patched Qt, check which package supplied the executable and install the appropriate upstream package if your application needs the patches.
Then run a small local-file smoke test. On a Unix-like shell:
printf '<html><body><h1>Test</h1></body></html>' > /tmp/wkhtml-test.html
wkhtmltopdf /tmp/wkhtml-test.html /tmp/wkhtml-test.pdf
Open /tmp/wkhtml-test.pdf and check that the text appears. For a real application, test a representative page with the images, CSS, headers, footers, and other behavior it depends on. A basic conversion confirms that the executable can render a simple local document; it does not prove that every patched feature works.
Diagnose common installation and rendering problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
wkhtmltopdf is not recognized or command not found |
The installation did not complete, or the executable directory is not on PATH. |
Confirm the installer or package completed, open a fresh terminal, and check the installation directory and PATH. |
| The package manager reports unmet dependencies | The package may not match the distribution release, or required system libraries are missing. | Recheck the OS release and architecture, use the matching package, and let the package manager resolve dependencies. Do not assume manual extraction will supply them. |
| The version output does not identify patched Qt | You may have installed a distribution build without wkhtmltopdf’s patches. | Check the package provenance and compare its behavior with your application requirements. Install the matching upstream patched build if needed. |
| Headers, footers, or another required feature do not work as expected | The installed build may lack patched Qt, or the issue may be specific to the document or invocation. | Verify the executable’s patched-Qt status, then reproduce the issue with a small document and the exact command and options used by the application. |
| The simple smoke test fails to create or open a PDF | The executable may be unavailable, dependencies may be missing, or the installation may be incomplete. | Check the command output and package installation, rerun the version check, and install a package matching the OS and architecture. |
| A package installs on one Linux distribution but fails on another | System-library versions and distribution packaging differ. | Use a package built for the target distribution and release; do not promote a working build from one system to a different one without testing. |
Security and deployment considerations
The wkhtmltopdf project warns against using the tool with untrusted HTML: unsanitized user-supplied HTML or JavaScript can expose the server running the converter to complete takeover. Treat HTML, scripts, CSS, remote URLs, and local-file access as untrusted inputs in server-side workflows.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Rank #4
- Sanitize user-controlled content before conversion.
- Isolate conversion jobs from sensitive files, credentials, and other workloads.
- Do not expose a converter directly to arbitrary users with unrestricted access to local files or network resources.
- Keep the package source and version documented, and test upgrades against the documents and features your application uses.
For containerized deployment, a container can make the operating system and dependency set more repeatable, but it does not make untrusted input safe. The official packaging project documents reproducible Docker and Vagrant workflows for building packages; use those when maintaining a custom target, not as a substitute for selecting a correct published package when one is available.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual goal is to capture a website as an image or PDF rather than install a local HTML-to-PDF renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, the cURL request below captures a page as WebP; replace the URL with the page you need and provide your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, and known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
When a distribution package is enough
A repository package can be appropriate when its behavior meets your needs and you want distribution-managed dependencies. Use the upstream patched build when your application requires patched-Qt features that your distribution package omits. In either case, verify the installed executable and test the particular document features you depend on; package name or version alone is not a feature guarantee.
