On Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), install the wkhtmltopdf package: it also provides the wkhtmltoimage command. Run sudo apt update, then sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf. Verify the executable with command -v wkhtmltoimage and wkhtmltoimage --version.

Install wkhtmltoimage from Ubuntu’s repository

  1. Refresh the package index:

    sudo apt update
  2. Install the package that supplies the image-conversion command:

    sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf

Although the executable is named wkhtmltoimage, its Ubuntu package is named wkhtmltopdf. Ubuntu’s Noble package listing places it in the Universe repository and lists version 0.12.6-2build2 for amd64. The Ubuntu 24.04 wkhtmltoimage manpage identifies the executable as provided by that package.

Check that the command is available

Run these local checks:

command -v wkhtmltoimage
wkhtmltoimage --version

The first command should print the executable’s path if it is available on your shell’s search path; the second prints its version. To convert a URL to an image, the documented usage form is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>. For example:

wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.png

This shows the command form; actual output can depend on the site and the package build.

Ubuntu’s package versus upstream downloads

For Ubuntu 24.04, the Ubuntu repository package is the direct Noble package. The upstream download page lists stable version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, and lists Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy), not Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), among its Ubuntu download targets. An upstream Jammy binary is therefore a separate compatibility choice, not an upstream build listed for Noble.

There can also be rendering differences between package variants. The upstream project status page explains that some features require its patched Qt; distribution builds without those patches may behave differently. If your application depends on a particular feature or rendering result, confirm that the installed build supports it before relying on it.

Troubleshoot installation and rendering

APT cannot find the package

The package installed but the command is not found

Check command -v wkhtmltoimage and review the installation output to confirm that wkhtmltopdf installed successfully. The Ubuntu manpage documents the executable under that name.

The output differs from an upstream example

Check which package build you installed and whether the behavior you expect depends on patched Qt. Upstream notes that patched and distribution Qt builds can differ; do not assume a Jammy download is an official Noble build.

Security: do not render untrusted HTML without sanitizing it

The wkhtmltopdf project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat user-supplied HTML and JavaScript as unsafe input before passing it to this renderer. See the project documentation.

If your goal is to capture a web page as an image rather than install a local renderer, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, save a screenshot as WebP with cURL:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
