Quantum is not a Microsoft Windows feature. It is a third-party Start menu appearance for Windows 11 that the Link Vegas Theme page says to apply through Windhawk’s Windows 11 Start Menu Styler mod. Microsoft has also introduced separate, built-in Start menu controls, but those arrive through Windows Update and are not called Quantum.

What the “Quantum” upgrade actually is

The name refers to the Minimal Quantum Start Menu Style published by Link Vegas Theme. It changes the Start menu through Windhawk, a customization platform, rather than adding a new Windows component.

That distinction matters: installing the style means accepting a third-party configuration and its compatibility claims. The available publisher information does not establish independent security, performance or reliability testing, and it does not prove that the style works on every Windows 11 build.

How to install the Quantum Start Menu style

Link Vegas Theme gives the following sequence. The procedure below is attributed to that page; the steps have not been independently tested here, and Windhawk’s interface may change.

  1. Download and install Windhawk. Obtain the application from its official distribution channel and complete its setup.
  2. Open Windhawk’s mod browser. Find and open Windows 11 Start Menu Styler.
  3. Open the Advanced tab. This is where the mod exposes its editable configuration.
  4. Paste the Quantum configuration. Copy the configuration supplied on Link Vegas Theme’s Minimal Quantum Start Menu Style page into the mod’s Mod settings box.
  5. Save the settings. Apply the configuration and open Start to see whether the style loads correctly.

The style page lists several Windows versions, including Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. That is a publisher-provided compatibility claim, not an independently verified guarantee. If the menu becomes unstable or does not render correctly, disable or remove the Start Menu Styler mod in Windhawk and return to Windows’ native Start settings.

What Microsoft added natively

Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview notes for KB5120998 (OS Builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278) describe separate Start menu customization options. Microsoft says, “This update makes the Start menu more personal with several customizations.”

  • Choose Small or Large Start menu sizing, in addition to Automatic.
  • Rename the Recommended area to Recent.
  • Hide your account name and profile picture.
  • Use separate controls to show or hide Pinned, Recommended and All.

Microsoft is rolling these changes out gradually, and availability varies by device and market. Check Settings > Windows Update and your local Start menu settings instead of assuming the options are already enabled on every Windows 11 installation.

Quantum or Microsoft’s Start menu: which approach fits?

Consideration Microsoft’s built-in controls Quantum style through Windhawk
What it is A Windows feature delivered through updates A third-party visual configuration for Windhawk’s Windows 11 Start Menu Styler
Installation Install the applicable Windows update, then use Windows settings when the feature is available Install Windhawk, open the mod, paste the publisher’s configuration and save
Customization scope Size, section visibility, and account name/photo controls documented by Microsoft A separately supplied Start menu appearance and layout configuration
Compatibility evidence Microsoft documents the update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 builds listed in KB5120998; rollout is gradual The publisher lists versions including 24H2 and 25H2, but those claims are not independently verified
Trade-off Less setup and Microsoft-supported behavior More visual customization, with an added third-party dependency and configuration step

There is no verified side-by-side test establishing that Quantum is faster, more reliable or easier to use than the native menu. Choose it for the appearance and control it offers, not because “Quantum” is an official Windows release or a measured performance upgrade.

Checks to make before applying a third-party style

  • Confirm that you are comfortable installing a third-party customization tool and running a mod that changes a core Windows interface.
  • Record your current Start menu preferences so you can restore them if the style does not suit you.
  • Read the style page’s current instructions and compatibility notes immediately before applying its configuration.
  • After saving, test Start, Search, pinned apps, Recommended or Recent items, and the All apps view.
  • If anything behaves unexpectedly, disable the mod first rather than adding more configuration changes.

Why “finally gets a proper Start menu” is misleading

That wording describes an opinion about the visual result, not an official Microsoft announcement. Microsoft’s documented changes and the Quantum style are two different paths: one is a native Windows update, while the other is a third-party Windhawk customization. Keeping them separate prevents you from installing software when the built-in controls already meet your needs.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Install Quantum only if you want the third-party look and are willing to manage Windhawk and an unverified configuration. For supported customization with no extra mod, wait for Microsoft’s Start menu options to reach your device and use the native settings.
