Yes, you can replace Windows with SteamOS or Bazzite on many older handheld gaming PCs, but compatibility matters more than the installer. The practical gates are UEFI firmware, a GPT-partitioned SSD, enough free space, and a GPU with usable Vulkan support. Bazzite is usually the safer choice for hardware that SteamOS does not officially support; SteamOS is the better first attempt when the handheld is close to Valve-supported AMD hardware and you want Valve’s recovery workflow.
Back up the internal drive before changing partitions. If Windows remains on the device, save the BitLocker recovery key, unlock BitLocker, disable Fast Startup, and do not hibernate Windows. Then create a USB 3.0 installer, choose the image that matches the handheld and GPU, and install either to a wiped drive or to manually prepared partitions for dual boot.
Choose between SteamOS and Bazzite before you erase anything
The two systems can provide a console-style Steam interface, but they target different situations. Your choice determines which installer image you download, what hardware support you can expect, and how much manual work is required.

Choose Bazzite for unsupported or newer hardware
Bazzite is designed as an alternative for Windows handhelds where SteamOS does not run well or is missing functionality. Its image picker lets you select the handheld family, GPU family, desktop environment, and whether to use the -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant when that variant is supported. Bazzite also publishes handheld-specific fixes through its wiki and can include newer kernels and drivers needed by hardware that an older SteamOS build does not handle well.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Select Bazzite when your device is not an officially supported SteamOS target, when Wi-Fi, controls, display rotation, sleep, or power controls need model-specific fixes, or when you want a choice between KDE and GNOME Desktop images as well as Steam Gaming Mode.
Try SteamOS when the hardware is close to Valve’s supported devices
SteamOS uses Valve’s recovery/install image and is the most direct route to Valve’s own operating system on compatible hardware. It is worth trying first on a handheld with AMD graphics and hardware characteristics close to Valve-supported handhelds. Valve cautions that troubleshooting may be limited on devices outside its officially powered hardware, so an installation that boots is not necessarily an installation with working controls, suspend, audio, or performance controls.
SteamOS and Bazzite compared
| Decision point | SteamOS | Bazzite |
|---|---|---|
| Official-device support | Best fit for hardware close to Valve-supported AMD handhelds. Valve’s troubleshooting coverage may be limited on other devices. | Intended for Windows handhelds where SteamOS is unavailable, incomplete, or unreliable. |
| Image selection | Valve recovery/install image. | Image picker selects handheld hardware, GPU family, KDE or GNOME, and the -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant when supported. |
| GPU compatibility | Most predictable on Valve-like AMD hardware; older or different GPUs require testing. | Official requirement is Vulkan 1.3 or higher. Bazzite documents a Proton-CachyOS with DXVK-Sarek workaround for some Vulkan 1.1/1.2 hardware, with important game-compatibility limits. |
| Updates | Valve’s SteamOS update stream; a current cadence for unsupported handhelds is not stated. | Maintained handheld images with newer kernels and drivers when needed; exact update timing varies by release. |
| Recovery and rollback | Valve supplies the recovery/install environment. | Installation images are available; a separate rollback policy is not stated in the documented requirements, so keep your original Windows recovery media and backups. |
| Dual boot | The recovery workflow is not a guided dual-boot tool; manual partitioning may be required. | Same-drive dual boot requires manual partitioning, a GPT disk, and a separate EFI partition. |
| Desktop options | The supplied recovery workflow does not specify selectable desktop environments. | KDE and GNOME Desktop images are available, along with the handheld-focused -deck variant where supported. |
| Handheld-specific fixes | Dependent on Valve support for the device. | Model-specific fixes and known issues are documented in the Bazzite handheld wiki. |

The internal disk must be bootable in UEFI mode, and existing disks must use GPT (GUID Partition Table). Bazzite installation to an MBR-partitioned disk fails. If Windows is installed in legacy BIOS mode on an MBR disk, convert or reinstall only after making a verified backup; do not attempt a partition conversion casually on the only copy of your data.
Memory and SSD space
Bazzite’s documented minimums are 8 GB of system memory and 50 GB of free space on an internal SSD. The recommended free space is 120 GB. The 50 GB figure is a minimum for the operating system and updates, not a comfortable games library. A small internal SSD can work for testing, but a larger SSD gives the system room for shader caches, updates, and games.
Vulkan capability
Bazzite lists a graphics card capable of Vulkan 1.3 or higher as its graphics requirement. On older GPUs, the installer may complete even when Steam Gaming Mode or Proton games perform poorly. Verify the exact GPU model and its Vulkan level before committing the internal disk.
If the GPU only exposes Vulkan 1.1 or 1.2, Bazzite documents Proton-CachyOS with DXVK-Sarek as a possible compatibility path. Treat it as a compromise rather than an upgrade: Bazzite warns against relying on that workaround for anti-cheat or multiplayer games. Expect some titles to refuse to launch, have rendering problems, or perform below Windows.

AMD, Intel, and Nvidia considerations
AMD handhelds closest to Valve’s supported design are the least risky SteamOS candidates. Intel and Nvidia handhelds, and AMD models with unusual controllers or display wiring, deserve a Bazzite image-picker and wiki check before installation. A GPU family appearing in an image picker does not guarantee working sleep, TDP controls, rotation, or every Proton game; confirm support for the exact handheld model.
Prepare Windows and your data safely
A clean install can erase every partition. A dual-boot installation can make Windows unbootable if BitLocker metadata, EFI files, or recovery partitions are mishandled. Complete this checklist before you boot the installer.
- Back up personal files. Copy documents, saves, photos, browser data, and any license or recovery files to another disk or cloud location. Open a few copied files to verify the backup.
- Record the BitLocker recovery key. Save it somewhere accessible from another device. Several handhelds require BitLocker to be unlocked before Bazzite installation, and you may need the key after firmware or partition changes.
- Unlock BitLocker. In Windows, decrypt or unlock the system volume as required by your model’s installation instructions. Do not assume a suspended protector is equivalent to an unlocked drive.
- Disable Fast Startup. Fast Startup leaves Windows volumes in a hibernation-like state that can interfere with Linux access and partition changes.
- Do not hibernate Windows. Shut Windows down fully before resizing its partition or booting the installer.
- Check the firmware mode. Confirm that Windows is using UEFI and that the disk is GPT. If the disk is MBR, stop and resolve that layout before installing Bazzite.
- Collect model-specific information. Note the handheld model, screen resolution and orientation, Wi-Fi chipset, controller layout, and current BIOS version. These details make wiki troubleshooting much faster.
A compact physical wired USB keyboard is useful during installation. It avoids relying on a handheld’s touchscreen or virtual keyboard when the installer asks for a user name, password, encryption passphrase, or storage-unlock credentials.
Download the image and create the bootable USB
What you need
- A USB flash drive with at least 10 GB of free space.
- USB 3.0 speed or faster for practical installer performance.
- A separate computer if the handheld’s Windows installation is being replaced.
- A stable internet connection for downloading the image and completing first-boot updates.
Flashing an image erases the USB drive. Move anything important from it first. The installer drive is not a safe place for your backup.
Create a Bazzite installer
- Open Bazzite’s download page and use the image picker rather than choosing a generic image by guesswork.
- Select the handheld hardware family and the GPU family.
- Choose KDE or GNOME if you want a conventional Desktop image. Choose the
-deckimage for Steam Gaming Mode when the picker lists it as supported for your hardware. - Download the image and verify that the file completed before flashing.
- Use Fedora Media Writer, Bazzite’s preferred flasher, or use Rufus or Etcher. Each writes the image in a way the handheld firmware can boot.
- Eject the USB safely after flashing and label it so you do not mistake it for a data drive.
Do not use Ventoy for this installation. Bazzite documentation says Ventoy is not recommended under any circumstance and that support will not be provided for it.
Create a SteamOS installer
- Download Valve’s SteamOS recovery image for the current supported release.
- Use the image-writing method specified with that recovery download to write it to the USB drive.
- Confirm that the USB contains the recovery environment and that the flash operation completed without errors.
SteamOS and Bazzite images are not interchangeable. A Bazzite image will not provide Valve’s recovery workflow, and a SteamOS recovery image will not provide Bazzite’s handheld image choices.
Boot the handheld from USB
- Connect the freshly flashed USB drive and the wired keyboard if you have one.
- Power the handheld completely off. Avoid starting from Windows hibernation or Fast Startup.
- Open the model’s UEFI setup or one-time boot menu using its documented button combination. The exact key or button sequence is model-specific, so consult the handheld manual or manufacturer support page.
- Select the USB device in UEFI mode. If two entries appear, choose the one explicitly marked UEFI.
- If the USB is absent, try another USB port, confirm that the flash operation succeeded, and check whether the firmware has external-boot restrictions. Do not enable random legacy-boot options on a GPT installation.
At this point the installer should load without changing the internal disk. You can use this session to confirm that the display, touchscreen, Wi-Fi, speakers, controls, and external keyboard respond before installing.

Install Bazzite or SteamOS cleanly
A clean install is the simplest layout and the easiest to recover. It removes Windows and all existing partitions on the selected target drive, so proceed only after verifying the backup and recovery key.
- Start the installer from the USB and select the internal SSD as the destination. Read the drive model and capacity carefully; do not select the USB installer itself.
- Choose the automatic or clean-install option when offered.
- Review the partition-deletion warning. Remove the old partitions only if you intend to replace Windows completely.
- Allow the installer to create the UEFI/GPT layout and install the operating system.
- Create the local user account and password. A physical keyboard is especially useful here, and it may also be needed to unlock encrypted storage.
- Wait for the write and verification stages to finish. Do not suspend, power off, or disconnect the handheld during this process.
- Shut down when prompted, remove the USB drive, and boot from the internal SSD.
If the installer reports an MBR error, stop rather than forcing it. Bazzite cannot install to an MBR-partitioned disk; return to the firmware and disk-layout checks, then correct the storage layout with a verified backup.
Set up same-drive dual boot without losing Windows
Dual boot is possible, but it is a manual partitioning job rather than a one-click feature. The safe sequence is to prepare Windows first, shrink its partition from Windows, and leave unallocated space for Linux.
- Complete the Windows backup, BitLocker, Fast Startup, and hibernation steps above.
- In Windows Disk Management, shrink the main Windows partition by the amount of space you want to give the new system. Leave Windows and its recovery partitions intact.
- Shut Windows down fully. Do not reboot into hibernation.
- Boot the Bazzite or SteamOS USB in UEFI mode.
- Choose manual partitioning instead of automatic whole-disk installation.
- Install into the unallocated space. Ensure the disk remains GPT.
- Use a separate EFI System Partition for the Linux boot files rather than overwriting Windows’ EFI files. If the installer requires an existing EFI partition, identify it by its FAT32 filesystem and small system-partition role; do not format it unless the installation instructions explicitly require that action.
- Review every partition and mount-point change before committing. A mistaken format operation can remove Windows or the recovery environment.
- Finish installation, reboot, and test both operating systems. If Windows requests the BitLocker recovery key, use the key you saved before installation.
Keep the original Windows recovery media until both operating systems boot reliably. If a firmware update changes the boot order, use the UEFI boot menu to select the correct loader rather than reinstalling either operating system.

Correct display scaling and orientation
On a fresh Bazzite installation, the most important desktop adjustment may be the scaling setting in Display(s) [and Monitor]. Incorrect scaling can make text and controls too small or too large on a handheld screen. Check resolution, refresh rate, rotation, and scaling before judging the interface or launching games.
Test the hardware in a deliberate order
- Touchscreen and physical controls, including every button and analog stick.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth if present, speakers, headphone output, and microphone.
- Sleep, wake, shutdown, and restart.
- Screen brightness, refresh-rate changes, orientation, and external-display output.
- TDP, fan, performance, and battery reporting controls.
- Steam Gaming Mode navigation, controller mapping, downloads, and a Proton game.
Use the Bazzite handheld wiki for model-specific fixes instead of applying a workaround written for a different device. A fix for one controller microcontroller, display panel, or power-management implementation can be wrong for another handheld.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Troubleshoot the failures most common on older devices
The USB does not boot
- Reflash the image; an incomplete write is common when the download or USB is faulty.
- Use a USB 3.0 drive and another port, preferably without a hub.
- Open the one-time boot menu and select the UEFI entry for the USB.
- Check that the firmware allows external boot and that you did not accidentally leave Windows Fast Startup or hibernation active.
Installation stops with an MBR or GPT error
Bazzite requires GPT. An MBR disk will fail installation. Stop, back up the data, and convert or reinstall only after deciding whether Windows will remain. Do not delete partitions merely to make the error disappear.
The system installs but Steam Gaming Mode is unstable
Installation success does not prove that the GPU meets the experience target. Recheck Vulkan support and the exact handheld image. GPUs below Vulkan 1.3 may need the documented Proton-CachyOS and DXVK-Sarek path, and that path is unsuitable for some anti-cheat and multiplayer games. If the device is outside Valve’s officially supported hardware, SteamOS troubleshooting may be limited; Bazzite’s model wiki may contain the practical fix.
Games launch with broken graphics or refuse to start
Check the GPU’s Vulkan level first, then test a different Proton title. Older Vulkan 1.1/1.2 hardware can have a narrower compatible game set even when the desktop works. Do not treat a workaround intended for older rendering stacks as a guarantee for competitive or anti-cheat games.
Text is unreadable or the screen is mis-sized
Open Display(s) [and Monitor] and correct scaling, resolution, refresh rate, and orientation. Apply one change at a time and restart Steam Gaming Mode if it does not redraw the interface immediately.
Controls, audio, Wi-Fi, or power features are missing
Confirm that you selected the exact handheld image rather than a generic desktop image, then consult the device-specific Bazzite wiki entry. Test after a complete reboot, not only after resuming from sleep. If the feature is absent on SteamOS hardware outside Valve’s supported range, there may be no official troubleshooting path.
Plan storage and recovery for the long term
The operating system’s minimum is 50 GB of internal SSD space, while 120 GB is the documented recommendation for Bazzite. Games, shader caches, updates, and dual-boot overhead make the recommendation more practical for regular use. If the original SSD is smaller, an internal NVMe replacement can be considered, but replacing or repartitioning the drive can erase Windows and recovery data; clone or back up first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the installer USB, Windows recovery media, BitLocker recovery key, and a current personal-file backup together. They are more useful than a remembered password when a firmware update, failed partition change, or storage replacement prevents the handheld from booting.
