The instructions name Steam Deck, Machine/PC, and Steam Frame images, while Valve’s broader PC compatibility statement concerns AMD-powered PCs. That does not prove an experimental or future ARM build cannot exist, but it means you should not treat the standard Steam Deck recovery image as a supported install for an arbitrary ARM device.
Start by checking Valve’s support information and the handheld maker’s documentation for your exact model and hardware revision. If neither identifies the device as a SteamOS target, the official materials reviewed here do not establish that its boot firmware, graphics, controls, wireless, or power management will work.
What Valve’s installation instructions support
Valve’s SteamOS installation and repair instructions describe images for Deck, Machine/PC, and Steam Frame. The page also describes compatibility work for other AMD-powered PCs. That is not a documented support statement for ARM handhelds in general.
Valve’s SteamOS download page is titled “Download SteamOS: Steam Deck Image.” Valve describes SteamOS as Arch Linux-based and says the Steam Client is proprietary software included in the image. The fact that SteamOS is Linux-based does not, by itself, establish compatibility with a particular ARM handheld.

Valve’s SteamOS FAQ says most users should expect SteamOS to come preinstalled on a Steam Deck or a device that incorporates SteamOS. Its description of improved compatibility with other handhelds and desktops specifically refers to AMD-powered PCs. These are boundaries on Valve’s stated support, not a component-by-component compatibility list.
Check whether your exact handheld is supported
- Identify the precise device. Record its full model name and hardware revision. “ARM handheld” is too broad to determine whether an image or working drivers exist for it.
- Check Valve’s current target list. Look for the exact model in Valve’s official installation documentation and list of “Powered by SteamOS” devices. Confirm that Valve identifies an image or installation route for that target; do not infer support from a general reference to PCs or handhelds.
- Check the manufacturer’s documentation. Look for explicit Linux or SteamOS support, supported boot methods, firmware requirements, and drivers for the device’s components. The Valve pages above do not settle those details for an unnamed ARM model.
- Separate official support from community reports. A report that someone booted an image or got some features working is not the same as support from Valve or the manufacturer. Check which hardware revision, image, and functions the report actually covers.
If Valve does not name your model and the manufacturer does not document the required Linux support, compatibility is unconfirmed by the official information cited here. The available pages also do not explicitly identify the CPU architecture of every SteamOS image, so they do not establish that installation is technically impossible; they simply do not provide a supported generic ARM-handheld procedure.

What the SteamOS recovery workflow does—and does not do
Valve’s recovery workflow is for the image and target covered by its instructions. A USB recovery drive prepares and starts that documented process; it does not make unsupported hardware compatible.
- Download the image Valve identifies for the target device.
- Write the recovery image to a USB key with at least 8 GB capacity. Valve lists Rufus for Windows, balenaEtcher for macOS, and balenaEtcher or a command-line method for Linux.
- Boot the target into the recovery environment using the documented procedure.
- Choose the installation or repair option that matches what you intend to do. Valve’s “Wipe Device & Install SteamOS” option “will fully wipe your device and install stock SteamOS.”
Do not choose the wipe-and-install option unless you intend to erase the device and have backed up anything you need. The workflow above describes Valve’s documented installation process; it is not an ARM compatibility workaround.

Licensing is separate from hardware compatibility
Valve’s download page grants a personal-use installation license and prohibits redistributing the image—including packaging it with hardware or preinstalling it—without a separate license. Open-source components in SteamOS do not grant permission to redistribute Valve’s proprietary Steam Client or suggest that hardware is officially associated with Valve.
