To install a SteamOS beta update, press the Steam button, open Settings > System, expand Beta Participation, set System Update Channel to Beta, and restart when prompted. After the restart, return to Settings > System > Software Updates and install the offered build.

Beta software can contain unfinished features and regressions. Stable remains available in the same channel selector, so you can switch back if a test build causes problems.

What you need before installing a beta update

The procedure applies to Valve Steam Deck handhelds, including the Steam Deck OLED. You do not need a computer or a recovery image for the normal channel switch. Have the following ready:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Steam Deck connected to the internet.
  • Sufficient battery charge, preferably with the charger connected during the download and restart.
  • Time for the Deck to download, apply and boot the update.
  • An understanding that Beta is test software rather than the most mature SteamOS channel.

Save any important game progress before changing channels. The channel selector changes the SteamOS update stream; it is not a separate game installation process.

Install SteamOS Beta step by step

1. Open the Steam menu

From Gaming Mode, press the physical Steam button on the left side of the Deck. This opens the main navigation panel.

2. Open Settings

Select Settings in the menu. Do not use the desktop operating system’s update controls for this change; the channel selector is in the Steam client settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Go to System

In Settings, select System. This page contains SteamOS information, system-update controls and the beta-participation options.

4. Find Beta Participation

Scroll to Beta Participation. Depending on the SteamOS revision, the section may be collapsed or presented with slightly different spacing. Expand it if necessary.

5. Set the System Update Channel to Beta

Open the System Update Channel pull-down and choose Beta. This is the setting that changes SteamOS system updates; it is separate from any Steam client beta setting you may see elsewhere.

6. Accept the restart prompt

SteamOS will ask you to restart. Accept the prompt and allow the Deck to reboot. The restart is required before the new channel selection takes effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Check for the offered build

After the Deck returns to Gaming Mode, open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates. Check for updates. The available beta build and the action button are supplied by SteamOS, so the exact text may be Download, Install or another current label.

8. Download and install

Choose the install or download action shown on screen. Keep the Deck powered and connected while SteamOS downloads and applies the update. The Deck may restart again as part of installation. When it returns to the Steam interface, open the Software Updates page once more if you need to confirm that no additional update is waiting.

How to confirm that the beta channel is active

Open Steam > Settings > System and expand Beta Participation. The System Update Channel field should show Beta. Then open Software Updates to check whether a build is available.

A beta channel can be selected even when no new package is immediately offered. Channel selection and update availability are separate: the selector identifies the stream, while Software Updates reports what is currently available for your Deck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the Deck still shows the previous channel after the restart, reboot once more, reconnect to a reliable network and check the selector again. Do not interrupt an update that is already being applied.

Stable, Beta and Preview: what changes?

Valve’s Steam Deck News release notes describe Beta and Preview releases as updates containing “new features that are still being tested.” The labels communicate how early a build is in the testing process, not a guaranteed performance percentage or failure rate. Valve does not publish a universal numeric risk rate for these channels.

Channel Update maturity and risk Feature timing Known-regression likelihood Returning to Stable
Stable Most broadly validated channel and the default choice for predictable day-to-day use Receives features after testing and wider validation Lower than test channels, although no software channel is completely free of bugs Already selected; no channel change is required
Beta Test channel with newer changes and a higher possibility of regressions Features arrive before Stable when Valve is still gathering feedback Release notes can list known issues and may advise affected users to return to Stable Select Stable in the same System Update Channel control and accept the restart or update prompt
Preview Earlier test software than Stable, with changes still under active testing Features can arrive earlier than in Beta or Stable Known issues and regressions are possible; consult the release notes for the specific build Select Stable in the same channel control and complete the prompted restart or update

Exact build numbers, feature lists and issue lists change frequently. Use Valve’s current Steam Deck News release-notes page for the build currently offered rather than relying on an old version number.

What to check before keeping a beta build

Read the release notes for the offered build before you install it. Look for changes that affect the way you use the Deck, such as display output, suspend and resume, controller input, desktop mode, storage or game compatibility. The notes may also identify a regression that has a direct workaround or recommend Stable for users who encounter it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Beta when you have a reason to test an upcoming change, report a problem or need a fix that has not reached Stable. Stay on Stable when the Deck is a primary work or travel device and a failed boot, broken peripheral or game-specific regression would be costly.

Switch back from Beta to Stable

You can return to Stable without using a separate recovery procedure in the ordinary case.

  1. Press the Steam button.
  2. Select Settings, then System.
  3. Open Beta Participation.
  4. Expand System Update Channel.
  5. Select Stable.
  6. Accept the restart and update prompt.
  7. After the Deck restarts, open Settings > System > Software Updates and install the Stable build offered there.

SteamOS menu wording can change between revisions. If a label is not identical to the steps above, use the control that currently identifies the system update channel and choose Stable. Valve release notes describe switching to Stable as the practical response when a beta regression affects users.

Troubleshooting beta installation

The Beta option is missing

Confirm that you are in Steam > Settings > System, not in a game’s properties or a desktop application. Expand Beta Participation and look specifically for System Update Channel. If the option is still absent, restart the Deck, reconnect to the internet and check again. SteamOS revisions can move or rename settings slightly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Deck does not show an update after selecting Beta

Changing the channel requires a restart, and the update may not be offered until the system checks for it. Restart if you have not already done so, then open Software Updates and check again. A selected channel does not guarantee that a new package is available at that moment.

The download is stuck or fails

Keep the Deck on a stable network, connect the charger and retry from Settings > System > Software Updates. If another update is listed, install it first. Valve’s software troubleshooting guidance recommends installing any available system updates and restarting the Deck. The Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide covers those general steps.

Performance or stability became worse

Read the release notes for the exact beta or Preview build and compare your symptoms with its known-issues list. If the problem is listed, switching to Stable through Beta Participation > System Update Channel is the supported practical response. If the issue is not listed, restart first, install any additional update offered, and test whether the behavior persists before changing more settings.

The Deck keeps rebooting during the update

Do not force it off while an update is visibly being applied. Keep it connected to power and allow the process to finish. If the Deck returns to SteamOS, check Software Updates for a pending package and restart normally. For persistent failures that prevent normal startup, use Valve’s official troubleshooting material rather than deleting system files or interrupting the update process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game or accessory stopped working

Beta changes can affect hardware support, display connections, input devices or individual games. First check the release notes for a matching known issue. Then restart the Deck and retest the affected device. If the regression remains, select Stable and complete the prompted update. Keep notes about the affected game, accessory and steps that reproduce the problem if you intend to report it through Valve’s support channels.

Using release notes to choose the right channel

Valve’s dated Steam Deck News entries are the authoritative place to read what a particular Beta or Preview build changes. They can include new features, fixes and known issues, and they can change as testing progresses. Open the latest entry from the Steam Deck News archive, then look for the channel name and the build’s issue list before installing.

Do not treat a Beta label as a promise that every feature will work better on every Deck. A build may solve one problem while introducing another, especially for users with a particular dock, display, controller, storage setup or game. The release notes are more useful than an old guide that names a fixed version number.

A practical update routine

For a primary everyday Deck

Keep Stable selected, read the Stable release notes when an update appears and install when you have enough battery and time for a restart. This minimizes exposure to test-channel regressions.

For testing upcoming features

Switch to Beta, restart, check Software Updates and read the matching release notes. Test the functions that matter to you before relying on the Deck for travel or other time-sensitive use. If a known regression affects your setup, return to Stable rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

For early experimentation

Preview is intended for changes that are still being tested earlier in the process. Use it only when you accept a greater chance of bugs and have a straightforward way to return to Stable. Keep recovery information and your important game saves available before experimenting.
