Identify the exact Ethernet adapter in Device Manager before choosing a driver. For a routine update, start with Windows Update or Device Manager’s automatic search. For a manual installation, use a compatible package from your PC manufacturer—or the matching official Realtek controller-family listing—and install it through Device Manager. If a recent driver update caused the problem, use Roll Back Driver when Windows offers that option.
Before you change the Ethernet driver
- Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Network adapters. Record the Ethernet adapter’s displayed name and your PC’s manufacturer and model.
- Check the PC manufacturer’s official support page for a driver that matches the adapter and your Windows version and architecture. Microsoft recommends using the device manufacturer’s driver and matching the Windows version and architecture (Microsoft’s Device Manager driver instructions).
- If you may need to uninstall the current driver, save a compatible backup package first. If the PC is offline, download it on another computer and transfer it using a USB flash drive, as Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance recommends.
Do not choose a package just because its name includes “Realtek.” Realtek publishes separate downloads for different controller families, and a listing alone does not establish which package belongs on a particular OEM computer.
Choose an installation route
| Route | Use it when | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or automatic search | You want to check for an available driver through Windows. | Internet access is useful; Windows can search automatically for many devices, including network adapters. |
| Manual manufacturer package | You know the adapter and want to install a specific compatible package, or Windows does not find one. | A package matched to the adapter, Windows version, and architecture; an extracted driver folder if required. |
| Roll Back Driver | The issue began after a recent driver update and Windows still offers rollback for that adapter. | Administrator permissions. Restart if Windows prompts you. |
Update through Windows Update or Device Manager
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates, or open Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter, and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow any prompts. Microsoft notes that Windows Update provides drivers for various hardware, including network adapters (Microsoft Support).
Manually install a manufacturer or Realtek package
- Download the driver from your PC manufacturer’s official support page when available. If using Realtek’s catalog, first confirm that the listing covers your adapter or controller family.
- Match the download to your Windows release and system architecture. Extract the package if needed, and note the folder containing the driver files.
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the identified adapter, and select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
- Browse to the extracted folder, continue through the prompts, and restart if requested. Then check whether the adapter appears in Device Manager and whether the Ethernet connection works.
Why the exact Realtek adapter matters
Realtek’s download catalog separates controller families and package types. Its PCI GBE family listing, for example, names RTL8110S/RTL8169S and related models. Its PCI Express Fast Ethernet listing identifies the PCIe FE Family Controller and RTL8107E, while its PCIe FE/GbE/2.5GbE/5G/10G family listing covers a broader set of controller families.
The listings distinguish Windows 10/11 NDIS packages from Windows 11 NetAdapterCx packages where applicable. The PCI GBE and PCIe Fast Ethernet pages list NDIS versions 10.80.20 and 10.80.50 dated August 28, 2026; the PCIe Fast Ethernet page also lists Windows 11 NetAdapterCx versions 11.031.50 and 11.031.20 with that date, and a DASH all-in-one Windows 10/11 installer dated September 9, 2026. These are catalog entries, not a recommendation for every PC. Prefer a package supplied for your exact computer by its manufacturer.

- 2.5 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the 2.5G Base-T Technology, TX201 delivers high-speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps, which is 2.5x faster than typical Gigabit adapters. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls
- Versatile Compatibility – The Ethernet Network Adapter is backwards compatible with multiple data rates(2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps Base-T connectivity). The 2.5G Ethernet port automatically negotiates between higher and lower speed connection.
- QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
- Wake on LAN – Remotely power on or off your computer with WOL, helps to manage your devices more easily
- Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases
Roll back a recent driver update
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Realtek adapter, and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver. Choose a reason if prompted and confirm.
- Restart if Windows asks you to. Microsoft says administrator permissions are required for driver rollback (Microsoft Support).
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows does not offer a prior driver through that control. Check your PC manufacturer’s support page and use the manual installation steps to install a compatible package if one is available. There is no single fallback version established for all Realtek adapters.
Reinstall after Ethernet stops working
Save a backup driver before uninstalling. Microsoft’s recommended recovery sequence is to uninstall the network adapter in Device Manager and restart; Windows will then look for and attempt to install a driver. If that does not restore the adapter, install the saved manufacturer package. For a PC without internet access, transfer the package from another computer on a USB flash drive (Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting steps).

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025 (Microsoft’s Windows recovery page). This is separate from rolling back one Ethernet driver. The Windows Go back option returns to a previous Windows version after an upgrade; Microsoft says it is available for 10 days in most cases. It is not the same as Roll Back Driver in the adapter’s Properties.
