Build those pieces deliberately and test them before relying on the stream.
What you are building—and what “always-on” requires
A Linode is a virtual machine on which you configure your own Linux software; it is not a managed OBS desktop. OBS runs inside a graphical Linux session, encodes the scene, and sends it to YouTube Live using an ingest server and stream key. The computer at home can be off, but the Linode, its graphical session, OBS, and the network connection must remain available.
OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 support and X11 or Wayland as Linux/Unix requirements. It cautions that meeting those basic requirements does not guarantee the machine can stream or record: CPU and encoder demands vary with resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. A bare SSH terminal is not a complete OBS runtime. OBS system requirements
The official materials cited here do not document a supported, end-to-end configuration for a persistent remote GUI, virtual display, OBS auto-start, or process supervision on a headless Linode. Consequently, the steps below cover provisioning, security, package installation, and stream configuration, then identify the persistence work you must validate separately. This is not a turnkey or tested always-on recipe.

Decide whether a Linode fits your stream
Cloud hosting moves the computer and its network connection to a data center, so a home PC and home internet connection need not stay on. In exchange, you are responsible for Linux administration and for providing a usable, secure graphical session that survives disconnection and restart. An always-on local computer avoids remote-desktop setup but still depends on local power, connectivity, and hardware. Compare the total recurring host cost and administration effort with the stream’s actual needs.
Choose compute based on the scene and encoding workload, not merely the fact that OBS launches. Akamai describes Accelerated plans as suited to video processing and live streaming, and GPU plans as suitable for video encoding; neither source establishes that either is necessary for a simple OBS scene. Check current regional availability, network terms, and plan resources before committing.

- Determine whether you will encode on CPU or use a supported hardware encoder and drivers.
- Account for scene complexity, codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check sustained outbound bandwidth and applicable transfer allowances; YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are not a Linode bandwidth guarantee.
- Consider region latency, plan capacity, monthly cost, expected operating hours, and the added complexity of remote graphics and recovery.
Akamai’s plan guidance currently notes that VPU availability is temporarily at full capacity across all regions and lists a starting price of $280 per month ($0.42 per hour). Its GPU page lists an RTX PRO 6000 starting at $1,665 per month ($2.50 per hour), with model and regional availability varying. These are source-published figures accessed October 3, 2026—not a quote, guarantee of availability, or recommendation that your stream needs that hardware. Check the live pages before choosing: Akamai plan guidance and GPU Linodes.
Create and secure the Linode
- Choose the instance and Linux distribution. In Akamai Cloud Manager, CLI, or API, create a compute instance in a region that meets your latency and availability needs. Select a distribution supported by the OBS installation method you intend to use, and size the plan for the desired encoding workload. Akamai offers multiple Linux distributions and plan types; regional price and availability can vary. See Akamai’s Linode documentation.
- Set up SSH access and a limited user. Use a non-root account for routine administration and secure SSH access. Root has unlimited privileges, so avoid using it as your everyday login.
- Update the system and restrict access. Apply system updates, harden SSH, and configure the local firewall to expose only services you need. Do not leave SSH or any remote desktop service exposed without appropriate controls. Follow Akamai’s setup and security guidance.
- Plan the graphical session before installing OBS. Provide a Linux graphical environment that supports X11 or Wayland and meets OBS’s OpenGL requirement. The cited official installation material does not specify which remote desktop, virtual display, or persistent-session arrangement to use on a headless VM, so verify those choices for your distribution rather than assuming SSH alone is enough.
Install OBS for your distribution
OBS’s Linux installation page, dated August 26, 2021, recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions. For Ubuntu 18.04 or newer it gives these commands; verify that they remain appropriate for your exact Ubuntu release and repository configuration before running them.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt install obs-studio
- Other distributions: use Flathub as recommended by the OBS Linux installation page, and follow the instructions for your distribution. The OBS page also directs users of other distributions to its Linux installation guide on GitHub.
- Launch within the graphical session: start OBS in the desktop session you intend to keep running. Confirm that it opens and can access the required display and audio devices before configuring a continuous broadcast.
Installation success does not establish that encoding performance, audio capture, or restart behavior will be adequate. See OBS Linux installation instructions and OBS system requirements.
Prepare YouTube Live and configure OBS
- Check YouTube Live eligibility and create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or select a stream, and use the provided stream URL and key in OBS. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key or connect through the offered account workflow. If entering a server manually, use the RTMPS ingest URL supplied by YouTube when available; do not copy an ingest URL from an unrelated guide.
- Build the scene and verify audio. Add the video source or sources you need, check that the intended audio is present, and watch the OBS audio meters. Use representative motion and audio in a private or unlisted test before relying on a long broadcast.
- Choose output settings that match the stream. In Settings → Output, use advanced output controls if needed to set the encoder, bitrate, and CBR rate control. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you plan to send. In the encoder’s keyframe interval field, set 2 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Supported video codecs listed in its guidance are H.264, H.265, and AV1; check the current table and ensure your OBS encoder, YouTube ingest, and chosen profile agree.
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate examples are 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not guaranteed capacity for the Linode or the route to YouTube. Allow connection headroom and check the current table for your precise codec and output mode at YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround, supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Match OBS’s audio format and bitrate to the profile you actually use rather than assuming these settings apply to every codec or delivery mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate persistence before calling it always-on
A continuous stream is more than an OBS preview that works while you are logged in. You must establish that the graphical session and OBS remain available without an active SSH connection, and recover correctly after the interruptions you expect. No specific supervision or remote-desktop recipe is established by the cited official sources, so choose one appropriate to your distribution and verify it rather than relying on assumption.

- Run an end-to-end test. Send a test using representative motion and audio. Confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the stream and reports healthy video and audio. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the stream. OBS also recommends testing before a first live stream. OBS Studio overview
- Check the real workload. Observe encoder load, dropped frames, audio continuity, and YouTube stream-health messages at the resolution and frame rate you intend to keep running.
- Disconnect SSH. End the SSH session and confirm the broadcast continues to reach YouTube. A stream that stops when the administering terminal closes is not persistent.
- Test recovery deliberately. Under controlled conditions, check behavior after an OBS process exit, a network interruption, and a VM reboot. Verify that the graphical session and OBS return, YouTube receives a valid feed again, and the correct stream key remains configured. Do not infer recovery from a single successful launch.
- Monitor and maintain it. Keep a way to check YouTube stream health and the VM, review logs or service status for failures, and install updates with a plan for restarting and retesting the stream.
Troubleshoot common failures
- OBS does not open over SSH: OBS needs an X11 or Wayland graphical environment and OpenGL 3.3 support. Launch it in a configured graphical session; a shell-only login does not supply those requirements.
- The stream ends when you disconnect: the graphical session or OBS process may be tied to the login session. Configure and validate a persistent session and process recovery method appropriate to your Linux distribution; the cited official instructions do not prescribe one.
- OBS reports encoder overload or frames are dropped: the VM may not sustain the selected encoder, scene, resolution, or frame rate. Test a simpler scene or lower output mode, review CPU/GPU availability and encoder configuration, and retest before returning to the target profile.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or unstable ingest: compare the OBS bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec and mode, leave bandwidth headroom, and test the outbound path. A plan’s CPU or GPU capability alone does not prove its network path can sustain the chosen bitrate.
- YouTube receives no signal or rejects the broadcast: check that the stream is active in Live Control Room, that OBS uses the correct current key and ingest server, and that the selected codec and output settings are supported. Reset an exposed key and update OBS if necessary.
- Audio is absent or mismatched: check the OBS source, meters, selected audio device, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate. Verify the receiving stream in YouTube rather than relying only on OBS’s local preview.
- The stream does not resume after a reboot: confirm the VM has booted, the graphical session starts, OBS is launched in that session, and YouTube Live Control Room sees the feed. Automatic restart must be explicitly configured and tested; installation by itself does not provide it.
