NGINX RTMP and FFmpeg have different jobs: NGINX’s third-party RTMP module accepts or relays streams, while FFmpeg reads prerecorded media and publishes the outgoing video and audio to YouTube. YouTube provides the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. The available documentation does not establish a current, tested Ubuntu 22.04 recipe for an indefinitely looping, reconnecting stream, so treat installation and loop behavior as things to verify on your own stack—not as a turnkey command.
What you are building
The pipeline can be arranged as FFmpeg sending directly to YouTube, or as FFmpeg sending to an NGINX RTMP application that relays the stream onward. NGINX is not the component that loops a local media file: FFmpeg reads and processes the file, and the module supplies RTMP server and relay capabilities. The upstream project documents FFmpeg integration and publishing examples, but those examples do not establish a robust endless-loop command or recovery policy for this Ubuntu release.
This distinction also affects whether you need NGINX at all. If FFmpeg can publish directly to the YouTube endpoint using the transport you choose, an intermediate NGINX server may add complexity without being necessary for a single outgoing stream. Use NGINX when you specifically need its RTMP server or relay role.

Open Source NGINX with the third-party module
The nginx-rtmp-module upstream README describes building NGINX with the module source by configuring NGINX with --add-module=/path/to/nginx-rtmp-module, then compiling and installing it. The README includes RTMP application, relay, recording, and FFmpeg examples. This is a source-build approach, not a verified current Ubuntu 22.04 package installation recipe.

If you source-build, match the NGINX and module revisions, preserve the configure options required by any NGINX features already in use, and verify the resulting binary and configuration before putting it into service. The documentation reviewed here does not establish a currently supported Open Source Ubuntu package name or a tested contemporary NGINX/module combination for Jammy.
NGINX Plus dynamic module
NGINX’s RTMP dynamic module documentation covers nginx-plus-module-rtmp from the official NGINX Plus repository. It describes enabling the module with a top-level load_module directive, checking configuration with nginx -t, and reloading NGINX. This route is specifically for NGINX Plus; it is not an installation guide for Ubuntu’s Open Source NGINX packages.
Why an old Jammy recipe is not enough
A community wiki page labeled for Ubuntu 22.04.1 describes a source build pinned to NGINX 1.23.1 and older dependencies. That is evidence that a Jammy source-build procedure has been documented, not proof that the versions or steps are current or compatible with your system. See the Ubuntu 22.04.1 community wiki page as historical guidance only.
Configure the RTMP application
The upstream sample places an rtmp {} block at the NGINX top level, defines an RTMP server listening on port 1935, and enables an application with live on;. It also shows a push directive for relaying to another RTMP host and FFmpeg exec examples. These are project examples, not a guarantee that every directive combination is appropriate for a public-facing server.
Restrict who can publish to an RTMP application. Keep publish credentials and stream keys in protected configuration, not in a public repository, screenshot, or command history. A YouTube stream key is password-like: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube explains how to manage and reset keys in its stream key guidance.

Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the publishing configuration for your encoder. Treat the key as a secret; reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
-
Start sending the stream, then use the Live Control Room workflow to confirm that YouTube is receiving it before making it public. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that an uninterrupted loop longer than that will be archived as one video.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL, and directs creators to get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. The exact compatibility of a particular Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and NGINX/module build with the chosen RTMPS route is not established here. Confirm that your outbound toolchain supports the endpoint before relying on it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Set encoder output for YouTube
Choose a profile that matches the source video and the sustained upload capacity of the machine publishing the stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance (accessed 2026) lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a server-sizing or performance test. The full settings are in YouTube’s encoder settings.
| H.264 profile | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
The figures above are YouTube’s published guidance, not independent measurements. Select a bitrate that your sustained upload connection can handle, and run an upload speed test as YouTube advises. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Its advanced guidance also specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
Make the prerecorded video repeat safely
FFmpeg is the part of this design that reads the recording and creates or passes through the outgoing audio/video stream. NGINX RTMP can sit between FFmpeg and YouTube as an ingest or relay layer. The upstream module README demonstrates FFmpeg integration, but the material available here does not verify an endless-loop command, timestamp handling at loop boundaries, reconnection behavior, or service supervision for Ubuntu 22.04. Avoid copying an unverified one-liner into a production stream.

Common symptoms and checks
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| NGINX rejects its configuration | Run nginx -t; confirm the module is actually available in the NGINX build and that directives are in the expected context. A configuration written for NGINX Plus’s dynamic module is not automatically an Open Source installation recipe. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Recheck the Live Control Room server URL and key, confirm the encoder is publishing to the intended endpoint, and verify that the chosen RTMP or RTMPS transport is supported by the installed toolchain. |
| Publishing stops at a loop boundary | Inspect the encoder’s timestamps and media compatibility across the transition; the documentation cited here does not validate a particular loop command. |
| Stream drops and does not resume | Check the encoder’s exit status, connection, and any process supervision or reconnect behavior you configured. The cited module examples do not establish automatic recovery for this setup. |
| Video or audio quality is unstable | Compare the encoder bitrate with sustained upload capacity and YouTube’s profile guidance; confirm audio format and sample rate are supported by your selected encoder configuration. |
