Install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store, GitHub releases, or WinGet, then enable only the utilities that solve recurring tasks for you. Before downloading, confirm that your PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1/build 19041) or later and has a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor.
Check whether your PC meets the requirements
Microsoft lists Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1/build 19041) or newer, a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, and the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime as requirements. The PowerToys installer bootstrapper installs WebView2 during setup, so you generally do not need to install it separately.
Check your Windows version and device architecture before choosing a GitHub installer. The release assets are architecture-specific: select x64 or ARM64 to match your PC.
Microsoft’s PowerToys installation guide recommends GitHub releases or the Microsoft Store, while also documenting package-manager options.

How do I install PowerToys?
Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store and search for Microsoft PowerToys.
- Select the PowerToys listing and choose Install.
- When installation finishes, open PowerToys from the Start menu.
GitHub release installer
- Go to the PowerToys releases page.
- Open the latest release and its assets, then download the executable for your processor architecture: x64 or ARM64.
- Run the installer and choose the installation scope that fits your PC. A per-user installation is available to your account; a machine-wide installation is available to other users on the computer.
- Complete setup and open PowerToys. For most x64 and ARM64 devices, per-user installation is a reasonable default. Choose machine-wide if multiple accounts need PowerToys and local device policy permits it.
Do not rely on a remembered release filename: assets change as new versions are published, so choose the matching executable from the current release.

winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source wingetMicrosoft documents user-scope installation as the default for WinGet and also provides a machine-wide command in its installation guidance. Chocolatey and Scoop are community-driven alternatives; they make most sense if you already use those package managers.
Set up PowerToys without enabling everything
After installation, PowerToys opens an introductory overview. Its Settings Home page provides utility controls and shortcuts; switch modules on or off there. The suite contains many utilities, but there is no need to enable them all. Start with one or two that address a frequent annoyance, learn their shortcuts or workflows, and add another only when a specific task calls for it.

PowerToys can check for updates while running if automatic update checking is enabled. You can also check manually in Settings. General settings include version and update checks, startup and appearance options, diagnostic controls, and report generation. Diagnostic data collection can be enabled or disabled in settings.
Which PowerToys utilities should you use?
Choose by the task you repeat, not by the size of the catalog. These are the strongest starting points for common workflows; each module can be enabled or disabled independently.

- File Locksmith: identify processes using a file.

- Advanced Paste: access additional paste options, including an optional AI-powered feature.
Microsoft describes PowerToys as free, open-source utilities for power users and developers. Its repository overview reports over 30 utilities, but the catalog changes over time; check the current Microsoft Learn overview for the latest descriptions.

If a feature appears ineffective in an application running as administrator, check whether the target app is elevated. Microsoft notes that operations such as moving elevated windows with FancyZones and some Keyboard Manager remaps may require PowerToys to have matching elevation.

When PowerToys shows an elevated-process notice, follow it and restart PowerToys as administrator for the task at hand. Microsoft cautions against always running apps elevated unless necessary because doing so carries security risks.
