Mario Kart ReTour is not an official Nintendo Android app. It is an unofficial, community-run project whose published download route is its own website and linked Discord server. There is no Nintendo Play listing or Nintendo support guarantee to rely on. The safest approach is to treat every APK as untrusted third-party software: obtain it only from the project’s current release post, compare its metadata and cryptographic values, keep Play Protect enabled, avoid entering Nintendo credentials, and stop if the file or installation process cannot be independently verified.
What Mario Kart ReTour is—and what it is not
The ReTour project describes itself as an effort to bring Mario Kart Tour’s servers back to life. Its own site explicitly says it is not affiliated with Nintendo and identifies the software as a fan project. That wording matters: ReTour is not a Nintendo release, Nintendo-supported revival, or normal Google Play installation.
Nintendo’s official piracy guidance says legitimate Nintendo smart-device games and applications are obtained through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. It also warns that files offered through third-party download links can be unauthorized copies. A Discord attachment, file-hosting page, mirror, or direct message therefore cannot be treated as equivalent to a store-distributed Nintendo app.
The project’s published access instruction is to join its Discord server. That establishes the project’s intended distribution channel, not the safety or authenticity of every file posted there. Discord accounts can be compromised, channels can be impersonated, and old release posts can remain visible after a newer build replaces them.

What ‘safe’ can realistically mean
No procedure can turn an unofficial APK into an official Nintendo product. Safety here means reducing avoidable risk and making an informed decision about software whose publisher, update process, server operation, and legal status are outside Nintendo’s control.
- Origin safety: you can trace the file to the project’s currently published channel instead of a repost.
- Integrity: the downloaded bytes match a hash published by the project through a separately trusted channel.
- Identity: the package name, version, release date, and signing certificate match the project’s announcement.
- Device safety: Android security controls remain active, permissions are proportionate, and you have a recovery plan.
- Account safety: you do not surrender Nintendo passwords, payment information, or unrelated personal data to an unofficial client.
A Play Protect pass is useful evidence about Google’s current detection signals, but it is not proof that ReTour is legitimate, Nintendo-authorized, or free of future risk.
Before downloading: a stop-or-go checklist
Use the project’s own starting point
Begin at the ReTour project’s website and follow its current Discord invitation. Do not begin with a search-result mirror, a random APK index, a Telegram attachment, a shortened URL, or an unsolicited direct message. If the project changes its official channel, use the website’s current instructions rather than an old bookmark.

Inside the project’s Discord, locate the release or announcement post that the project currently identifies as authoritative. Before downloading, look for all of the following:
- the current version number and release date;
- the exact Android package name;
- supported Android versions and CPU architectures;
- the expected APK filename and file size;
- a SHA-256 hash and/or signing-certificate fingerprint;
- instructions for updates, known limitations, and rollback.
The public ReTour page reviewed for this guide does not publish those technical values. If the current release post also omits them, you cannot complete a definitive ReTour-specific integrity or signature match. Do not fill the gap with a hash copied from a mirror or an invented compatibility claim.

Prepare a recoverable device
Back up photos, documents, authenticator data, and other important content before installing any sideloaded app. Install pending Android security updates. A secondary phone or separate Android user profile can reduce exposure, but isolation does not make malicious software safe; it only limits the data and accounts available to it.
How to inspect an APK before opening it
Download the file without launching it, then record its identifying details. On Android, open the browser or file manager’s download details and note the filename and size. If you can use a computer, copy the file without renaming it and calculate its SHA-256 digest with a local tool such as sha256sum filename.apk on Linux or macOS, or certutil -hashfile filename.apk SHA256 in Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt. Compare the result character-for-character with the value in the project’s current release post.
Keep a simple record containing:
- the source channel and message date;
- the exact filename, version, and file size;
- the package name shown by an APK inspection tool or Android’s installer;
- the calculated SHA-256 value;
- the signing certificate fingerprint, if the project publishes one.
Stop instead of installing when the file is a password-protected archive, arrives through a shortened or unexplained link, has been re-uploaded without a reason, differs from the announced size, or comes with instructions to disable Play Protect or other security controls. A request to install a second “helper,” “patcher,” or accessibility service should be treated as a separate high-risk decision, not as a routine game requirement.
Verifying the APK: four layers of evidence
Verification is strongest when independent checks agree. Android’s developer-verification guidance explains that an app-signing key is represented by the certificate used to sign an APK; comparing that certificate helps connect an application to a developer identity. The ReTour project-specific values needed for a final match are not publicly established in the material available for this article.

Why a hash must come from a separate channel
A hash copied from the same download page as the APK does not protect you if that page was altered. Prefer a value in a signed announcement, a separately maintained project notice, or another channel that the project clearly identifies. Compare every character; a single changed digit is a mismatch. If no project-published hash exists, record that the integrity check is unavailable rather than substituting a third-party scan result.

Why the signing certificate matters
Android updates normally require continuity of the signing key. An APK signed by an unknown certificate may be a fork, a rebuilt package, or an impostor. Use an APK inspection utility on a computer or Android device to view the certificate and SHA-256 fingerprint, then compare it with the project’s published fingerprint. Because the public ReTour information reviewed here does not state a fingerprint, you cannot claim that a particular certificate is genuine. You can only explain the check and wait for the project to document the expected value.

Google recommends obtaining apps through Google Play where possible. Android warns that unknown-source installations can damage a device, cause data loss, or expose personal information. Play Protect scans installed and newly downloaded applications, warns about potentially harmful software, and can block or remove software it identifies as harmful.
- Open the APK only after inspection. In your file manager, tap the verified file. Android may ask which app is allowed to install unknown apps.
- Grant the narrowest installer permission. If Android opens Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, allow the permission only for the browser or file manager you are using, and plan to turn it off again after installation.
- Read the installer identity. Confirm the displayed package name and requested update relationship. Cancel if the installer shows a different app name or an unexpected package.
- Leave Play Protect on. Allow the scan to complete. Do not disable it merely because the APK is blocked or warned about.
- Review permissions before accepting. Decline or cancel when the request is unrelated to a racing game, especially access to SMS, contacts, accessibility control, device administration, payment information, or broad account data.
- Install only if the evidence still agrees. If the package, hash, signature, or release instructions do not match, cancel and delete the file.
- Revoke the installer privilege. Return to the unknown-apps setting and switch off permission for the browser or file manager unless you have a specific, temporary reason to keep it.
Menu names vary slightly by Android manufacturer and version. Use the Settings search field for install unknown apps if the path is different on your phone.
Account, payment, and permission red flags
An unofficial client should not be assumed to provide Nintendo’s account protections, authentication flow, payment security, compatibility guarantees, or update pipeline. Never type a Nintendo password into a screen that you cannot independently attribute to Nintendo. Do not reuse a Nintendo password anywhere else, and do not provide payment-card details to an unofficial installer or server.

- SMS reading or sending;
- contacts, call logs, or microphone access unrelated to a stated feature;
- accessibility control, overlay permission, or device-administrator status;
- your Nintendo account password, recovery codes, or payment details;
- installation of another APK from an unknown host;
- permission to disable Play Protect, Android security warnings, or device encryption.
Permissions can change in an update. Recheck them after every new build rather than assuming a previously acceptable release remains equivalent.
What to check after installation
Run a second security review
Open Play Protect and run a scan after installation. Review Settings > Apps > Mario Kart ReTour (or the exact package label shown by Android) to see granted permissions, mobile-data use, battery activity, and whether the app has special access. Android’s labels vary by manufacturer, so use Settings search for permissions, battery, and special app access.
Watch for behavior outside the game’s purpose
Unexpected background network traffic, persistent battery drain, unexplained overlays, new device administrators, repeated login prompts, or requests for unrelated personal information are reasons to stop using the app. Do not wait for a confirmed compromise before uninstalling software that behaves differently from its stated purpose.
Remove it cleanly if necessary
- Disconnect the device from sensitive accounts if you suspect credential exposure.
- Uninstall the app from Settings > Apps.
- Remove any companion APKs or profiles installed at the same time.
- Revoke special access and the browser’s unknown-app installation permission.
- Run Play Protect again and review account security from a separate, trusted device.
- Change credentials only through the legitimate Nintendo or email service, never through a ReTour prompt.
What to do when Play Protect blocks or warns about the APK
Treat a warning as a meaningful risk signal, not as an obstacle to work around. Cancel the installation and preserve the warning details. Recheck that the file came from the project’s current release post and that its package name, hash, and signer match documented values. If the project cannot provide independently checkable provenance, leave the APK uninstalled.
There is no responsible instruction to disable Play Protect simply because an unofficial game is inconvenient to install. Google’s detection may be incomplete, but bypassing it removes a protection without creating evidence that the APK is trustworthy.

Compatibility and support limits
The publicly available project information does not establish a minimum Android version, supported CPU architectures, device compatibility matrix, performance result, uptime, latency, player count, download count, or independently verified installation success. Do not infer those values from the original Mario Kart Tour app or from another community build.
Nintendo support, store updates, and Nintendo customer service do not automatically apply to ReTour. Server availability, matchmaking, update cadence, backups, and account recovery depend on volunteers operating the community project. A successful installation therefore does not guarantee that the game will connect or remain available.
Why ReTour exists after Mario Kart Tour’s shutdown
Nintendo support information scheduled the Mario Kart Tour service to end on September 29, 2026, at 23:00 Pacific Time. That deadline has now passed. ReTour’s stated preservation goal is a community response to the loss of the original service, not evidence that Nintendo authorized the project or transferred any rights to it.

Decision guide: install, wait, or stop
Proceed only when all critical checks pass
- You reached the file through the project website and current Discord release post.
- The release post identifies the version, package, date, size, and supported device information.
- The SHA-256 hash matches a project-published value obtained through a trusted channel.
- The signing certificate matches a documented or previously trusted project certificate.
- Play Protect raises no unresolved warning.
- Permissions are limited to what the game plausibly needs.
- You will not enter Nintendo passwords or payment details.
- Your data is backed up and you can remove the app if behavior changes.
Wait for better evidence
Wait when the project provides a download but no hash or signing fingerprint, when the release post is ambiguous about the current build, or when compatibility information is missing for your device. Waiting is safer than treating an unverifiable APK as authentic.
Stop immediately
Stop when the file comes from a mirror or unsolicited message, the hash differs, the signer is unknown, the package name changes without explanation, the installer asks you to disable security, or the app requests credentials and permissions unrelated to gameplay.
Bottom line
There is no verified, official Nintendo APK for Mario Kart ReTour. Use the project’s own website and current Discord instructions only as the starting point, verify origin, package identity, hash, and signing certificate where the project publishes those values, and keep Android and Play Protect safeguards enabled. Because a project-specific hash, signing fingerprint, compatibility matrix, and independent security audit have not been established, a definitive authenticity verdict is not currently possible. If any critical check fails—or if the app asks for Nintendo credentials—do not install it.
