To install a practical starting set of GStreamer runtime plugins on Ubuntu, update APT and install the tools plus the base, good, bad, ugly, and libav plugin families. Then use gst-inspect-1.0 to check that the elements your pipeline needs—such as x264enc and rtmpsink—are available. Installation alone does not configure a working YouTube stream: you also need the right capture, audio, encoding, muxing, and output elements, plus the RTMPS endpoint and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.

Install the runtime plugins and tools

For a broad runtime starting point, run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly gstreamer1.0-libav

This covers the GStreamer command-line tools and several commonly used runtime plugin families. It is a starting point, not a guarantee that every element in an unspecified pipeline will be installed. The official GStreamer installation guidance gives general Ubuntu/Debian instructions; the exact package versions and availability depend on your Ubuntu release and enabled repositories, not on being in India.

When to use the fuller upstream command

If you are developing an application against GStreamer, the project’s fuller Ubuntu/Debian command includes development packages and additional platform, audio, graphics, and UI packages:

sudo apt-get install libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-dev gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly gstreamer1.0-libav gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-x gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-gl gstreamer1.0-gtk3 gstreamer1.0-qt5 gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio

Development packages are for building software that uses GStreamer; they are not a general requirement just to run a streaming pipeline. The additional packages matter only if your application or pipeline uses the corresponding components. For application compilation, GStreamer documents pkg-config --cflags --libs gstreamer-1.0 for obtaining the core library’s compiler and linker flags.

Check whether the pipeline’s elements are installed

Check the elements actually named in your pipeline. For an H.264/RTMPS setup, for example:

gst-inspect-1.0 x264enc
gst-inspect-1.0 rtmpsink

gst-inspect-1.0 reports discoverable plugins and elements and can show details for a named element. If an element is not found, check that the relevant package family is installed, that it is available for your Ubuntu release and repositories, and that your environment is not hiding the installation. A successful inspection confirms only local discovery; it does not prove that a complete camera-to-YouTube pipeline will work.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 16GB Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (16GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

What the two example elements do

  • x264enc encodes raw video as H.264 and belongs to the x264 plugin supplied by GStreamer Ugly Plug-ins.
  • rtmpsink sends data to a streaming server over RTMP using librtmp and belongs to the rtmp plugin supplied by GStreamer Bad Plug-ins.

A real pipeline may also need source and capture elements, audio input and encoding, format conversion, a muxer, and suitable output configuration. Identify and inspect those elements for your actual source and pipeline rather than treating the encoder and sink as a complete command.

Configure YouTube’s streaming endpoint

YouTube Help says, “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” In Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS URL and stream key, then enter them in an encoder configured for RTMPS. Use the URL YouTube supplies; do not guess a server address. Treat the stream key like a password and do not publish it or include it in a public command or log.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. If an SSL error persists after checking the supplied URL, YouTube advises trying port 443. GStreamer’s rtmpsink documentation says it uses librtmp and supports URLs that librtmp supports. That does not guarantee that every Ubuntu build, librtmp combination, or YouTube endpoint will work without further configuration. Verify your installed element and test your actual endpoint and pipeline.

Choose RTMPS or HLS for the intended workflow

These are distinct YouTube ingestion modes, not two package choices that become interchangeable by installing a different plugin. Use the mode your encoder and YouTube setup support.

Consideration RTMPS HLS
Transport and setup RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; obtain the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Uses an HTTPS URL and HTTPS POST/PUT requests; follow YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
Media requirements described by YouTube Use an encoder that supports RTMPS; configure the codecs and pipeline required by your own workflow. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio.
Segment and latency behavior Continuous RTMP delivery rather than HLS segment delivery. TS segments must last 1–4 seconds, with a rolling playlist of no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it delivers segments rather than a continuous stream.

Choose HLS when your encoder or workflow needs that protocol or its listed codec support, and configure its HTTPS and segment behavior accordingly. Installing rtmpsink does not configure HLS.

Troubleshoot common installation and connection failures

  • gst-inspect-1.0 cannot find an element: confirm the package family that supplies it is installed, then check availability for your Ubuntu release and enabled repositories. Inspect every named element in the pipeline, not just the sink.
  • The element is found but the pipeline fails to build: discovery is not a full pipeline test. Check that the source, conversion, audio, encoder, muxing, and sink elements match the data formats and caps passed between them.
  • rtmpsink cannot connect: check the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, confirm the installed librtmp-backed element can use the URL, and investigate TLS/SSL errors. If an SSL error remains after verifying the URL, try port 443 as YouTube advises.
  • A plugin package is unavailable through APT: confirm the Ubuntu release and enabled repositories. General upstream Ubuntu/Debian installation guidance does not establish package versions or availability for every release.
  • You are trying to use HLS settings with an RTMPS pipeline: configure the intended protocol. HLS requires its own HTTPS endpoint and segment/playlist behavior; it is not enabled by installing an RTMP sink.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than build and maintain a GStreamer pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
