Clean and completely dry both the car panel and the magnet’s back, then place the magnet flat on a smooth, magnetic metal surface. Remove it on the schedule specified by its maker to clean and dry underneath, lift it instead of sliding it when repositioning, and take it off before washing the car. These steps reduce the chance of trapping grit or moisture against the paint, but cannot guarantee that a magnet will never mark a finish.
1. Choose a compatible, flat panel
Flexible car magnets need a magnetic metal surface and full contact. Pick a smooth, flat area without a pronounced curve, raised body line, trim, or other obstruction beneath the magnet. A panel that is curved or interrupted may keep the magnet from lying flush.
Some vehicle panels are not magnetic. If you are unsure about the intended location, test it with a small refrigerator magnet or check the vehicle maker’s guidance. Signs.com and Master Magnetics both emphasize surface compatibility and proper contact in their car magnet instructions and flexible-material care guidance.
2. Clean and dry both surfaces
Before installation, clean the vehicle panel and the magnet’s back. Dirt or tiny rocks caught between the two can scratch paint when the magnet shifts. Signs.com recommends cleaning both surfaces and allowing them to air dry; its instructions suggest a damp cloth and mild detergent as needed. Follow the care directions supplied with your particular magnet.

- Remove loose dirt from the panel and the magnet’s back with a soft cloth.
- If needed, clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent, as the product instructions allow.
- Let both surfaces dry completely before placing the magnet.
3. Apply the magnet without dragging it
Set the magnet gently onto the selected panel and check that it lies completely flat, with no trapped grit or air pockets. If it is crooked or needs repositioning, lift it fully away from the paint and set it down again. Do not pull or slide it across the finish: any debris underneath could be dragged along the paint.
4. Remove, inspect, and clean it regularly
Take the magnet off at the interval its manufacturer specifies. With the magnet removed, inspect and clean both the back of the magnet and the vehicle panel, then dry them before reinstalling. The cited care instructions do not give one universal schedule: Signs.com advises frequent or regular removal, while Collaterate’s care sheet recommends daily cleaning. Use the schedule for your specific product rather than treating one maker’s interval as a rule for every magnet.

5. Remove it before washing the vehicle
Take the magnet off before a car wash. Signs.com and Master Magnetics advise against washing with a magnet installed, and Signs.com also warns against power washing one in place. Clean and dry the magnet and panel before reinstalling it.

Do not assume a new finish is ready for a car magnet. Collaterate’s care sheet gives approximate waiting periods of 90 days for paint, 60 days for clear coat, and 2 days for wax. These are that document’s estimates, not universal specifications from vehicle manufacturers. Check the guidance for the vehicle’s finish and the magnet you have.

Exposure also matters when choosing a location. Master Magnetics cautions that using flexible material horizontally may allow plasticizers to migrate into paint. Follow the magnet maker’s surface and placement limits, particularly where a surface will have prolonged sun or heat exposure. Careful cleaning and placement lower risk; they do not make paint damage impossible.
