1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf an app is available on Google Play, install it there. If it is not, use the developer’s official website or a reputable alternative store, verify the publisher, keep Google Play Protect on, and allow installation only for the browser or file manager you use to open the APK. Turn that permission off again afterward. If you cannot verify the source—or Android or Play Protect warns you—stop rather than bypassing the warning.
Is it safe to install apps outside Google Play?
It can be done, but the safety of an APK depends heavily on where it came from and whether it is genuinely the app you intended to install. Android supports distribution through websites and other marketplaces, but Google warns that apps from unknown sources can damage a device, expose personal information, or cause data loss. Prefer Google Play; when that is not an option, use the developer’s official site or a reputable alternative store and check the publisher independently. Google’s Android app-download guidance and Android’s alternative distribution documentation describe these options and risks.
Google’s Android team reported in March 2026 that its analysis found “over 90 times more malware from sideloaded sources than on Google Play.” That is Google’s reported result, not an independently verified universal risk ratio: the blog post does not provide its underlying data, measurement period, or methodology. It is a reason to be selective about sources, not a guarantee that every Play Store app is safe or every app obtained elsewhere is malicious. Google’s post gives the attribution and date.
Check the app and its source before downloading
- Confirm the app is genuinely unavailable on Google Play. If it is listed there, use the Play Store.
- Navigate to the developer’s verified site. Type an address you already know or follow a link from the developer’s verified official page. Do not trust a filename, logo, or icon as proof of identity.
- Check the publisher and download route. Make sure the app name and developer match, and that the download is linked from the developer’s own site or a reputable store. Avoid anonymous APK aggregators, cracked or modified builds, and links sent in unsolicited messages.
- Compare published verification details when available. If the developer provides a cryptographic hash or signing information through a channel you independently trust, compare it with the downloaded file. If no such information is published, do not invent a verification check or treat its absence as proof of fraud.
- Do not install under pressure. Google warns that scammers may pose as bank fraud agents, technical-support staff, or delivery services to persuade people to install inauthentic apps. Do not install an app at the request of a caller, text, delivery message, pop-up, or supposed support representative.
How to install an APK on Android
- Download the intended APK from the developer’s verified site or a reputable alternative store. Check that the file is for the app you chose, not an unrelated installer or a bundle from an unfamiliar intermediary.
- Allow installation for the source you will use. On Android 8.0 and later, open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, select the browser or file manager that will open the APK, and enable its allowance. Menu names and paths vary by device. This permission is source-specific: allowing a browser does not automatically allow a different installer app.
- Open the APK and read each system prompt. Android may ask you to confirm the installation, and Play Protect may scan the app or show a warning. Being able to proceed past a prompt does not prove that the file is safe. Do not switch off Play Protect to complete the installation.
- Review the installed app’s permissions. Grant access only when it fits the feature you plan to use. If an app requests sensitive access that does not make sense for its stated purpose, decline or uninstall it.
- Revoke the installation allowance. Return to the same Install unknown apps page for the browser or file manager and turn off its allowance. Keep future updates on the same trusted publisher’s update path.
Android’s installation instructions for third-party distribution distinguish the source-specific setting on Android 8.0 and later from the older system setting. Android’s documentation notes that Android 7.1.1 and earlier may use Settings > Security > Unknown sources; where the device offers approval for a single installation, allow only that install. Settings can differ on manufacturer-customized software, and managed devices or some network providers may block outside installs. If a menu is missing, consult the device manufacturer or administrator instead of disabling other protections.

Keep Google Play Protect on
Play Protect checks apps during installation and periodically scans the device. Google says it may notify you about, disable, or remove an app it considers harmful. To check its setting, open Play Store > profile picture > Play Protect > Settings and confirm Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled. These checks are useful detection measures, not a guarantee that every harmful app will be found. See Google’s Play Protect guidance.
If Play Protect or Android identifies a malware or fraud risk, do not override the warning just to finish installing. Likewise, do not disable a security feature because an app, caller, or message tells you to. If you cannot establish that the app and publisher are legitimate, cancel the installation.

What APK signatures do—and do not—prove
Android requires APKs to be signed. A signing key helps Android establish that an update belongs to the same app as an existing installation; an update signed with a different key will not be treated as a valid continuation. That supports update continuity, but it does not prove that the original app is harmless or that its publisher deserves your trust. Android’s signing guidance explains the role of signing in app updates.

As of October 7, 2026, Android’s rollout overview says protections began on September 30 for installs from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, on certified devices running Android 7 or later. Android says verification capability will expand globally for apps on certified devices in 2027. This is a staged rollout, not a worldwide block on sideloading at the date stated. The exact availability depends on country, device certification, store, and rollout progress. Check Android’s current developer-verification overview for changes.

If your device blocks an app as coming from an unverified developer, Google’s help describes an advanced flow that can involve enabling an option in Developer options and waiting 24 hours before proceeding. Google’s instructions also describe choosing whether to retain the setting for seven days or indefinitely. The interface and availability can vary; consult Google’s help for installs from unverified developers rather than assuming every device follows the same steps. Do not use that flow to install an app whose source you cannot verify.

If an APK install or app behaves unexpectedly
- The APK will not install: Stop if the file is not clearly the intended app or came through an unfamiliar intermediary. Confirm compatibility and installation instructions with the developer using contact details from its verified site.
- The app asks for unrelated sensitive access: Decline the permission or uninstall the app. Do not grant access simply to get past a setup screen.
- Play Protect flags the app or Android displays a malware warning: Cancel the install or remove the app. Google says Play Protect may disable or remove apps it considers harmful.
- You installed it and now suspect fraud: Uninstall it. If you entered banking credentials or payment information, contact your financial institution using a number you verify independently, and change affected credentials from a trusted device.
