Steam Frame can run Android APKs through Valve’s Lepton container, but SteamOS does not provide a universal one-click APK installer. The supported workflows are the SteamOS Devkit Client, which uploads an APK as a launchable library entry, and Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which connects your PC to Lepton for Android deployment and debugging.
For the simplest repeatable setup, enable Developer Mode, pair the headset with the SteamOS Devkit Client, upload the folder containing your APK, set the APK filename as the Start Command, choose the Android runtime, and start the title. For direct Android development, connect ADB over Wi-Fi or through a USB TCP-forwarding setup, then deploy with your normal Android tooling.
How APK support works on Steam Frame
Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset running SteamOS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ARM64 platform. Valve lists native ARM64 applications and Android-based APKs among its supported execution models. Android software is not running directly as a conventional Linux process: Lepton provides the Android container that runs Android applications on Linux devices such as Steam Frame.
That architecture explains why an APK can be installed yet still fail to run. The package must be compatible with the headset’s ARM64 environment and with the Android services, graphics path, input model, permissions and hardware assumptions available inside Lepton. An APK extension alone is not a compatibility guarantee.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
SteamOS also includes Proton for Windows games and FEX for x86 translation. Those are separate compatibility layers; selecting Android in the Devkit Client or using an Android depot is what directs the title to Lepton.
Valve’s documented procedures focus on development and testing. They do not describe a general consumer file browser that installs any APK with one click. The two methods below are therefore the supported paths covered in this guide.
What you need before installing
- A Steam Frame with Developer Mode enabled.
- A PC for the SteamOS Devkit Client or an ADB-capable Android development setup.
- The APK file and, for Devkit upload, a local folder that contains it.
- A network connection shared by the PC and headset if you use Wi-Fi ADB.
- A USB cable or adapter that can provide separate power if you use USB ADB and the headset cannot stay powered from the PC alone.
- A current SteamOS installation. Check Steam Settings > System > Updates in the VR Dashboard before troubleshooting an installation failure.
Use an APK intended for the headset’s ARM64 hardware whenever the developer provides architecture-specific builds. Also check whether the application expects Google services, phone-only sensors, touch gestures or controller mappings that may not be available in the headset environment. Those checks do not replace testing on the actual device, but they prevent many avoidable failures.

| SteamOS Devkit Client | Repeatable uploads and a Steam library entry | Pair the headset in the Devkit Client | Set the APK filename as Start Command and choose Android for Runtime | A Non-Steam Devkit Game entry |
| ADB to Lepton | Android development, direct deployment and debugging | Wi-Fi hostname/IP or USB with TCP port 5555 forwarding | Connect to the Lepton target, then use Android deployment tools | A connected Android container/device target |
Choose Devkit when you want a title that can be started again from the Steam library without repeating a manual deployment. Choose ADB when you are iterating on an Android build, inspecting logs or using an existing Android Studio or command-line workflow.
Method 1: Install an APK with the SteamOS Devkit Client
The Devkit Client is Valve’s clearest documented upload workflow. It packages a local folder as a development title, lets you select Android as the runtime and creates a launchable entry in the headset’s library.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
1. Enable Developer Mode on Steam Frame
- Open the headset’s Settings.
- Go to System > Developer Mode.
- Turn on Developer Mode.
Developer Mode is required for both Devkit pairing and ADB access. If the pairing or connection controls are missing, return to this setting and verify that it is still enabled.
2. Create a pairing request
- On the headset, open Settings > Developer.
- Select Pair new host.
- Leave the pairing screen available while you configure the PC.
3. Register the headset in the Devkit Client
- On the PC, launch the SteamOS Devkit Client from Steam.
- Open Devkits and register the Steam Frame.
- Confirm the pairing request on the headset.
- Choose Connect to devkit by IP when the client offers connection choices.
If the client cannot find the headset, make sure the PC and Frame can communicate on the same local network and that the headset is not asleep. A successful pairing is required before the upload controls become useful.
4. Configure a title upload
- In the Devkit Client, select Title Upload.
- Enter a recognizable value in Name.
- Set Local Folder to the folder containing the APK.
- Set Start Command to the APK filename, including its extension. For example, if the file is
sample-game.apk, usesample-game.apkas the command. - Set Runtime to Android.
The Start Command is the file name, not a shell command and not a path outside the selected local folder. Keep the spelling and capitalization identical to the actual APK file.
5. Upload and start the APK
- Click Upload and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Click Start in the Devkit Client.
- On the headset, open Library > Non-Steam.
- Look for Devkit Game: (Your Game Title), using the name entered in the upload form.
Starting that entry launches the uploaded Android title through Lepton. If you replace the APK with a newer build, upload the folder again and start the updated title rather than creating a second entry with a different name.
Organize the upload folder
For a basic APK test, the selected folder can contain the APK at its top level. Avoid changing the filename after entering it as the Start Command. If the application requires additional files, preserve the directory structure expected by the Android build and verify that the uploaded folder includes those files. The Devkit procedure itself does not turn a package with missing assets or unsupported services into a compatible application.

Method 2: Connect ADB to the Lepton container
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is the direct development route. Valve notes that ADB can be downloaded from Google or obtained through Android Studio. Before connecting, start the Lepton Development title on Steam Frame. Launching an Android game also creates a Lepton container, so an Android target must be running for ADB to reach it.
Prepare the headset and PC
- Confirm that Developer Mode is enabled on the Frame.
- Start Lepton Development or another Android game on the headset.
- Install or open ADB on the PC.
- Keep the headset awake while making the first connection.
The connection target is the Lepton container rather than a generic Linux desktop session. If no Lepton title is running, ADB may connect to nothing useful even though the headset is powered on.
Wi-Fi ADB
Wi-Fi is the simplest ADB route when the PC and Frame are on the same reachable network.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the directory containing
adb. - Run
adb connect frame. - If the headset hostname was changed, replace
framewith that hostname. - When hostname resolution fails, find the Frame’s IP address in Quick Settings or in Steam Settings > Internet, then connect using that address instead.
A successful connection is reported as connected to frame:5555 when the default hostname is used. A connection made with an IP address reports that address and port instead.
Router client isolation can prevent two devices on the same Wi-Fi network from reaching each other. If the command times out, test from a network that allows local-device communication and verify that the PC is not on a guest network while the headset is on the main network.

USB ADB with TCP port forwarding
USB initially exposes the native Linux operating system, while Lepton listens for ADB on TCP port 5555. Forward the port through the USB connection, then connect ADB to the forwarded local endpoint.
- Connect the Frame to the PC with USB.
- From the directory containing
adb, runadb forward tcp:5555 tcp:5555. - Run
adb connect localhost:5555. - Use the resulting ADB connection with your Android deployment and debugging tools.
Valve warns that a PC may not provide enough power over USB to keep the headset running. If the headset disconnects, reboots or powers down during the connection, use a cable or adapter that accepts a separate power source, such as a powered USB-C adapter or hub. Wi-Fi ADB does not require that accessory.
Deploy the APK after ADB connects
Once ADB reports a successful connection, use Android Studio or your normal Android deployment workflow and select the connected Lepton target. This is the point at which you install, replace, launch and debug the package. The exact deployment controls depend on the Android tool you use; the Valve-documented requirement is that ADB be connected to the running Lepton container first.
For repeatable launches rather than development iteration, the Devkit Client is usually more convenient because it creates a named library entry. ADB is better suited to rapid build-test cycles where the package changes frequently.

Configure the supported operating system
- In Steamworks, open Application > General.
- Check Android under Supported Operating Systems.
Create and populate an Android depot
- In SteamPipe > Depots, configure an Android depot for the application.
- Place the executable APK at the top level of that depot.
- If the application uses OBB expansion files, place them in an
obbdirectory beside the APK.
The Android depot is not just an archive location. Valve states that its presence is what enables installation and launch of APKs through Lepton.
Add the Android launch option
- Create a launch option for the Android build.
- Set Executable to the APK.
- Set Operating System to Android.
Keep the APK at the depot’s top level so the executable path matches the package layout used by the launch option. A mismatched path can make an otherwise valid upload appear unavailable.
Configure cloud saves when needed
If Android save data should synchronize through Steam Cloud, configure the Android-specific external data setting, AndroidExternalData. Save locations and formats still need to be handled by the application; enabling the setting does not automatically convert incompatible save files.

Compatibility limits you should expect
Steam Frame’s ARM64 hardware and Lepton environment are the two baseline constraints. An APK built only for another CPU architecture may not start, while an ARM64 package can still fail because of software assumptions.
- Architecture: Prefer an ARM64-compatible build for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform.
- Android services: An app that requires services unavailable inside Lepton may stop during startup or lose sign-in, payments or cloud functionality.
- Graphics: Rendering features, shader behavior and API assumptions can differ from a phone or tablet.
- Input: Touch-first interfaces may not map cleanly to headset controls, tracked controllers or pointer input.
- Permissions and sensors: Phone cameras, GPS, telephony and other device-specific features may be absent or behave differently.
- Performance: A package that runs on a high-end phone is not automatically tuned for the headset’s thermal, display and VR workload.
Valve documents the execution layers but does not promise universal APK compatibility. Treat each application as a separate compatibility test and keep a known-good build available when experimenting with updates.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | What to check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The Devkit Client cannot pair | Developer Mode, Pair new host and local connectivity | Re-enable Developer Mode, create a fresh pairing request and confirm it on the headset. Ensure the PC and Frame can reach each other. |
| The upload completes but the title will not start | Runtime and Start Command | Set Runtime to Android. Make Start Command exactly the APK filename, including capitalization and extension. |
| The Devkit entry is missing | Upload status and library location | Wait for Upload to finish, press Start, then check Library > Non-Steam for Devkit Game: (Your Game Title). |
adb connect frame cannot resolve the host |
Hostname and IP address | Use the headset IP shown in Quick Settings or Steam Settings > Internet. If multiple Frames use the hostname frame, rename one or connect by IP. |
| ADB times out over Wi-Fi | Lepton state and router isolation | Start Lepton Development or an Android game, keep both devices on a network that permits local traffic and avoid client-isolated guest Wi-Fi. |
| USB ADB disconnects or the headset powers down | Available USB power | Use a separately powered cable, adapter or hub. The PC may not supply enough power to keep Steam Frame running. |
| ADB connects but the APK fails to launch | Package compatibility | Check ARM64 support, required Android services, graphics features, permissions and input assumptions. Test a build known to support the available environment. |
| An app worked before an update and now fails | SteamOS and application versions | Update SteamOS through Steam Settings > System > Updates, then test the APK version and its dependencies again. |
A practical installation decision
Use the Devkit Client if your goal is to upload a local APK and launch it later from SteamOS. Its required settings are straightforward: pair the Frame, choose Title Upload, point Local Folder at the build, use the APK filename as Start Command and select Android as Runtime.
Use ADB if you are actively developing or debugging. Start a Lepton container first, connect over Wi-Fi with adb connect frame or by IP, or use USB forwarding with adb forward tcp:5555 tcp:5555 followed by adb connect localhost:5555. For USB, plan for separate power if the headset cannot remain on the PC’s port.
For a public Steam release, configure Android as a supported operating system, create an Android depot, put the APK at its top level, add an Android launch option and configure AndroidExternalData when cloud synchronization is required. In every case, successful installation only proves that the package was delivered; actual playability still depends on ARM64 support and the application’s behavior inside Lepton.
