Yes, the Huawei P9 and P9 Lite received official Android 7.0 Nougat updates with EMUI 5.0, but there is no universal “all variants” firmware file. The correct package depends on the exact model number, regional customization code, carrier edition and current build. Check those identifiers first, then try Huawei’s built-in updater and HiSuite before considering a verified manual package.
This guide covers documented P9 and P9 Lite variants and historical Nougat releases. Firmware availability and server support can change; the examples below are not a guarantee that Huawei still serves a package for every phone.
What this update installs
The target release is Android 7.0 Nougat, normally paired with EMUI 5.0. Some P9-family maintenance packages reference EMUI 5.0.1 or another 5.x revision, but those files are not automatically interchangeable. This guide does not upgrade either phone to Android 8 Oreo or a modern Android release.
Nougat rollout builds were regional. Examples documented for the P9 include EVA-L09C432B390, EVA-L19C10B389, EVA-L19C636B389 and EVA-L09C605B389. P9 Lite examples include VNS-L31C432B388/B389, VNS-L31C169B386, VNS-L21C185B384 and VNS-L23C605B370. These are historical examples, not a universal download list. See the contemporaneous build coverage at AndroidSage.

Confirm your exact phone before downloading anything
Open Settings → About phone and record the following:
- Model number
- Full build number
- Android and EMUI versions
- Customization or regional code, if shown
- Carrier branding
- Whether stock or custom recovery is installed
- Whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked
A build such as EVA-L09C432B390 or VNS-L31C432B389 usually identifies the device family (EVA or VNS), model or market variant (L09, L19, L21, L31, and so on), customization code (C432, C636, C185, C605, C169) and firmware branch (B390, B389, etc.). Huawei’s naming is not perfectly identical across every release, so use the complete string rather than guessing from the retail name.
Common P9 families are EVA-L09 and EVA-L19; EVA-L29 appears in separate regional or beta material. Common P9 Lite families include VNS-L21, VNS-L22, VNS-L23, VNS-L31, VNS-L32 and VNS-L53. Coverage of those models is not proof that one file fits every market. Do not confuse the P9 Lite with the P9 Lite Mini, Nova Lite or an Honor rebrand.
Documented Nougat builds (examples only)
| Device | Model and customization | Historical build | Reported software | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P9 | EVA-L09 C432 | B390 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | European example |
| P9 | EVA-L19 C10 | B389 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | Russian example |
| P9 | EVA-L19 C636 | B389 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | Asian example |
| P9 | EVA-L09 C605 | B389 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | Latin American example |
| P9 Lite | VNS-L31 C432 | B388/B389 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | European examples |
| P9 Lite | VNS-L31 C169 | B386 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | UK/O2 example |
| P9 Lite | VNS-L21 C185 | B384 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | Middle East/Russia example |
| P9 Lite | VNS-L23 C605 | B370 | Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0 | Latin American example |
| P9 Lite | VNS-L22 C635 | B401 | Not specified in the cited listing | Huawei Japan SIM-free listing; not a global recommendation |
The first eight examples are listed in AndroidSage’s P9/P9 Lite coverage. Huawei Japan separately lists VNS-L22C635B401 at its regional software table. A higher B-number is not a safe reason to cross-flash: it may belong to another region, carrier or upgrade path.

Prepare the phone safely
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authentication codes and app data.
- Charge to at least 50%; Huawei’s general guidance is available on its update page.
- Use Wi-Fi for OTA downloads and keep adequate internal storage free.
- Remove root, custom modifications and incompatible system changes before using official updating tools.
- Confirm the package matches both model and customization code.
- Have a reliable USB data cable ready for HiSuite.
- Assume manual flashing can erase data and leave the phone unbootable; do not proceed without a recovery plan.
Method 1: install through the built-in updater
- Open Settings.
- Open System & updates → Software update, or search Settings for Updater on older EMUI versions.
- Tap Check for updates.
- If an official package appears, choose Download and install.
- Keep the phone powered or sufficiently charged. Do not power it off, restart it or remove the microSD card during installation.
- Allow the reboot and app-optimization process to finish.
Huawei’s current menu path and precautions are described in its online-update instructions. Afterward, check Android version, EMUI version and build number, then test mobile service, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, fingerprint and Google services.
Method 2: use Huawei HiSuite
- Download HiSuite from Huawei’s official support page.
- Install it on a supported Windows or Mac computer.
- Connect the phone with a USB data cable.
- Approve the connection and HDB permissions on the phone if requested.
- Open HiSuite and select Update.
- Install only the version HiSuite offers for that device, and do not disconnect or power off during the process.
Huawei’s UK page listed Windows HiSuite 14.0.0.370 and Mac HiSuite 13.0.0.350, both dated June 1, 2026. Those are application versions, not proof that Huawei still distributes Nougat for every P9 or P9 Lite. HiSuite may report that no update exists when the phone is already on its regional final build or Huawei’s server no longer serves the historical package.
Method 3: manual stock recovery (dload)
Use this only when OTA and HiSuite cannot help and you have verified the package’s exact model, customization code, provenance, checksum (if available) and starting-build requirements. This is a historical, high-risk procedure; old links can be dead or files can be mislabeled.
- Obtain the exact stock
update.zippackage for the phone. - Extract it and create a directory named
dloadon the required storage. - Place the extracted
update.appinsidedload. - Open the dialer and enter
*#*#2846579#*#*. - Select Software Upgrade → SDCard Upgrade and start the installation.
- Wait until it finishes before rebooting.
- If the documented release has a second package, replace the first file with the matching
update_data_full_...contents and repeat only with that same, verified release.
The dload, update.app and hidden-menu sequence comes from an older P9 installation guide at DroidViews. The menu may be unavailable on some builds, and a package can fail because of partition layout, rollback restrictions, bootloader state or an incompatible base build. Never substitute another region because its B-number is higher.

Why TWRP is not the normal route
TWRP and other custom-recovery procedures require a correctly unlocked bootloader and a package specifically built for that recovery. They can wipe the phone, create encryption or boot-loop problems, disable future OTAs and alter regional branding. A custom package is not interchangeable with a stock UPDATE.APP. Use this route only if you understand bootloader, partition and rollback risks and have a tested backup and recovery path. Historical regional-conversion warnings are discussed by Android Authority.
Choose the method by situation
| Situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Stock phone and official update appears in Settings | OTA |
| OTA is absent but the phone boots and a computer is available | HiSuite |
| Neither service offers the release, and an exact verified package exists | Manual stock installation, accepting reset/brick risk |
| Model or Cxxx code is unknown | Do not flash; identify the phone first |
| Package is for another model, region or carrier | Do not flash |
| Phone is rooted or uses custom recovery | Restore a verified stock state or obtain expert assistance before official updating |
When no update appears
- Recheck the complete model and build number.
- Retry after rebooting on Wi-Fi.
- If following Huawei’s troubleshooting guidance, clear the system/software-update app’s data.
- Try HiSuite.
- Do not install a random archive simply because it has a later-looking B-number.
Possible explanations include a regional final build, carrier firmware, staged rollout that never reached that code, modified software or a different required base build. Huawei’s failure guidance covers updater troubleshooting, eRecovery and HiSuite at this support page.
Recover from common failures
Verification failed
Stop repeating the flash. Check region, package integrity, system modifications and whether the package supports the current build. If supported, restore stock software or use HiSuite recovery.
Boot loop after installation
Allow extra time for the first boot. If it remains stuck, enter stock recovery and consider cache or data reset only after confirming your backup. Do not immediately flash another region.

Phone will not boot
If the phone is detected, attempt official HiSuite system recovery. Huawei documents a supported restoration route involving a powered-off phone, USB connection and Fastboot entry with power plus volume-down; availability varies by model and software state. See Huawei’s restoration guidance. A phone that cannot enter recovery, Fastboot or HiSuite recovery may require professional service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and support limits
Android 7.0 is obsolete by current security standards. Even a successful Nougat installation does not provide modern security patches, and the phone should not be chosen for sensitive use when a maintained device is available. Current HiSuite software availability is separate from historical Nougat firmware availability; Huawei may still distribute the utility while offering no Nougat package for a particular 2016 phone.
Download-safety rules
- Prefer OTA or HiSuite.
- Use only a package whose full model and Cxxx customization match your phone.
- Record the filename, source, file size and checksum where supplied.
- Distinguish Huawei-origin firmware from a third-party-hosted copy.
- Avoid paid unlock services, “one-click” unbrick tools and archives with no provenance.
- Mark any availability statement with the date checked; firmware links and server behavior change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I flash P9 firmware on a P9 Lite?
No. EVA P9 and VNS P9 Lite firmware use different device families, partitions and compatibility rules.
Can I cross-flash C432 and C636?
Do not do so merely because both packages are Nougat. Customization codes identify different regional branches; use a documented, device-specific conversion procedure only with expert-level safeguards.

Will manual installation erase my data?
It can. Keep a complete backup and treat a factory reset or failed installation as possible.
Can HiSuite force Nougat onto every P9 or P9 Lite?
No. HiSuite offers only packages supported for the phone, region and server state.
Can I update these phones to Oreo with this guide?
No. The procedures and builds covered here target Android 7.0 Nougat and EMUI 5.x.
What if a firmware download link is dead?
Do not substitute an unverified mirror. Continue with OTA or HiSuite, or locate a file whose provenance, checksum and exact compatibility can be independently confirmed.
