Google Drive on Windows 11 is installed through Google Drive for desktop. After setup, your cloud files appear in File Explorer, where you can open and organize them alongside local files.
The important choice is how Drive stores files: streaming keeps most content online and saves disk space, while mirroring keeps a complete local copy of My Drive. This guide covers installation, sign-in, offline access, local-folder backup, syncing controls, and the problems most likely to interrupt synchronization.
Check that Windows 11 is supported
Google Drive for desktop supports 64-bit Windows 11. Windows 11 on ARM is supported when the system meets Google’s current ARM64 requirements. 32-bit Windows and beta operating-system releases are not supported.
Drive for desktop uses Microsoft WebView2 for parts of its sign-in and interface. Windows 11 normally includes it, and the Google installer can attempt to install it if it is missing. The Drive cache should be stored on an NTFS drive; network locations using SMB or NFS are not supported as the cache location.

Download Google Drive for desktop
- Open the official Google Drive for desktop download page.
- Under the Windows download option, select Download for Windows.
- Save the installer. Its usual filename is
GoogleDriveSetup.exe.
Do not look for the old Backup and Sync, Google Drive File Stream, BackupAndSync.exe, or GoogleDriveFSSetup.exe installers. Those are obsolete product names or installers. The current Windows client is Google Drive for desktop.
Install Google Drive on Windows 11
- Open File Explorer with Windows + E.
- Open Downloads and double-click
GoogleDriveSetup.exe. - Allow the installer to make changes if Windows displays a User Account Control prompt.
- Follow the installation wizard. If WebView2 is missing, allow the installer to download and install it.
- When installation finishes, open the Start menu and select Google Drive if the program has not launched automatically.
The normal consumer installation does not require a Command Prompt or PowerShell command. Run the official installer directly rather than downloading an unofficial package from a third-party site.
Sign in to your Google account
- Open Google Drive for desktop from the Start menu.
- Select Get started, then choose Sign in.
- Complete the sign-in and any two-step verification in the browser window that opens.
- Return to the Drive for desktop application after authentication is complete.
Drive for desktop can support up to four Google Accounts at the same time. To add another account, click the Drive icon in the notification area, select your profile picture, choose + Add account, and complete browser sign-in. Restart Drive for desktop when prompted.
Find Google Drive in Windows 11
After sign-in, look at the right side of the taskbar. If the Drive icon is not visible, select the Show hidden icons arrow. Selecting the icon opens the Drive for desktop menu, including synchronization status, settings, notifications, and account controls.
Drive also creates a location in File Explorer. It is usually assigned the G: drive letter, although the letter may be different if G: is already in use or you change it. In File Explorer, open This PC and look for Google Drive.
To make it easier to launch, open Start, right-click Google Drive, and select Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar.
Choose Stream files or Mirror files
During setup or the first configuration, choose how My Drive should be handled. This setting does not make Shared drives available for mirroring: Shared drives can only be streamed.
| Option | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Stream files | Stores files primarily online. Opened files and files marked for offline use occupy local cache space. | Small drives, large cloud libraries, and computers that normally have internet access. |
| Mirror files | Keeps My Drive both online and in a selected local folder. The complete copy uses local disk space. | Frequent offline work, video editing, large files, or applications that need ordinary local files. |
Configure the synchronization mode
- Select the Google Drive icon in the Windows notification area.
- Open Settings and select Preferences.
- Select Google Drive in the left pane. In some versions, this section is labelled Folders from Drive.
- Under My Drive syncing options, select Stream files or Mirror files.
- Follow any prompts to choose a local folder or restart Drive.
Streaming still uses disk space. Files you open are cached locally, and files pinned for offline access remain on the drive. If Windows is nearly out of storage, streaming can also fail.

Make streamed files available offline
Streaming does not automatically download every file. To keep a particular file or folder available without an internet connection:
- Open File Explorer.
- Open the Google Drive location, then open My Drive or the relevant shared location.
- Right-click the file or folder.
- Select Offline Access and then Available offline.
You can review offline content by selecting the Drive icon, opening Settings, and choosing Offline files. Download large groups in smaller batches if an offline operation fails because of limited disk space, permissions, connectivity, or a “too many open files” error.
The offline option does not appear in mirror mode because mirrored My Drive files are already stored locally. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files also need offline editing enabled in Google Drive on the web before they can be edited offline.
Open and manage Drive files in File Explorer
Open the Google Drive location in File Explorer and browse to My Drive or Shared drives. Double-clicking a downloaded Microsoft Office file, image, video, or other supported file opens it with its associated Windows application.
A streamed file that is not stored locally may need to be downloaded before it opens. Google editor files—Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings—are cloud documents rather than ordinary Windows files. You cannot reliably copy them as normal files through File Explorer. To create a copy, open Google Drive in a browser, right-click the document, and select Make a copy.
Drive for desktop has its own search, which can find items in the streamed Drive location that Windows Search does not index in the usual way. The default shortcut is Ctrl + Alt + G. Change it under Settings > Preferences > Advanced settings.
Sync a folder from your Windows 11 computer
Folders already on the PC are configured separately from My Drive. This is useful for sending a Documents, Pictures, or project folder to Google Drive, although it requires both local storage and Google storage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Select the Google Drive icon in the notification area.
- Choose Settings > Preferences.
- Open the section for folders from your computer.
- Add the local folder you want to synchronize.
- Choose the available Google Drive synchronization or Google Photos backup option.
- Apply the changes and leave Drive running while the initial upload completes.
Folders selected from the computer are mirrored; they are not converted into streamed folders. Do not select a folder that is simultaneously managed by another backup or synchronization program unless you understand how the two programs will handle conflicts.
Pause, restart, or quit Drive for desktop
Use the Drive menu when you need to temporarily stop transfers or investigate a stalled sync. The menu includes pause and resume controls, and its sync-status view shows recent activity and the current state of files.

- Proxy mode: Auto-detect or Direct connection.
- Download and upload limits.
- The Drive search shortcut.
- Whether Drive launches when you sign in to Windows.
- Microsoft Office real-time presence features.
Bandwidth limits are entered in kilobytes per second. If you set a limit, transfers may appear slow even when the internet connection is working normally. Google documents values from 1 to 100,000,000 KB/s for upload and download limits, though practical speeds depend on the connection and server.
Switch safely between streaming and mirroring
Wait for recent edits to finish syncing before changing modes. Switching a large library can download or reorganize many files, so make sure the target disk has enough free space.
Mirror to stream
- Confirm that all local changes have synchronized to Google Drive.
- Change My Drive syncing options to Stream files.
- Quit Drive for desktop.
- Only after checking the cloud copy, remove the former mirrored folder if it is no longer needed.
Deleting the mirrored folder before synchronization finishes can permanently remove unsynced files.
Stream to mirror
Drive downloads My Drive to the local folder selected for mirroring. If files already exist there, Drive attempts to avoid duplicates. When local and cloud versions differ, it may retain both versions; local files that are not in the cloud may be uploaded.

Troubleshoot common Google Drive problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Drive will not load the account | Check the internet connection, available Windows drive letters, proxy settings, and whether an administrator has disabled Drive. |
| Files will not sync | Check both Google sharing permissions and Windows permissions. For a local folder, right-click it, select Properties > Security, and confirm that your Windows account has read and write access. |
| Storage errors appear | Check local free space and your Google Account storage separately. A full Windows disk and a full Google quota require different fixes. A shared file can also fail when its owner’s storage is full. |
| A deleted or unshared file will not update | The owner must restore or reshare it, or remove the local copy from the synchronization folder. |
| A file was sent to the Recycle Bin | Restore it from the Windows Recycle Bin. Drive cannot upload changes from a file that is no longer in its synchronized location. |
| Transfers stop after heavy use | Download restrictions or daily upload limits may have been reached. Wait and restart Drive later. |
| Drive crashes repeatedly | Temporarily review antivirus exclusions and security software. System-cleaner utilities can modify Drive configuration data and cause synchronization errors or data loss. |
Recover files from Lost and Found
When Drive cannot upload an unsynchronized file because of permissions, network errors, or another failure, it may place a copy in its local Lost and Found folder. In File Explorer, enter %AppData% in the address bar and navigate to:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalGoogleDriveFSlost_and_found<account_token>
Copy anything important from this folder to a safe location before disconnecting the account. Google warns that disconnecting the account deletes Lost and Found contents.
If the mirrored folder was moved or renamed
If you renamed or moved the local mirrored Google Drive folder, open Drive for desktop and select Locate on the notification. Choose the new folder and select Open. If the folder was deleted, use the notification option Stop syncing this directory rather than expecting a reinstall to recreate it.

FAQ
Is Google Drive already built into Windows 11?
No. Windows 11 can access Google Drive through a web browser, but File Explorer integration requires Google Drive for desktop, which you download from Google’s official Drive page.
Where is Google Drive located in File Explorer?
Open File Explorer and select This PC. Google Drive normally appears as a virtual drive, often using the G: drive letter. You can change the letter in Drive for desktop’s advanced settings.
Should I stream or mirror Google Drive files?
Choose streaming when local disk space matters or your library is large. Choose mirroring when you need all of My Drive offline or when applications work better with complete local files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use Google Drive offline on Windows 11?
Yes. In streaming mode, right-click a file or folder in the Google Drive location and select Offline Access > Available offline. Mirrored files are already stored locally.
Does streaming Google Drive use hard-drive space?
Yes. Opened files, cached content, and files marked available offline use local storage. Streaming reduces disk usage but does not eliminate it.
Can Shared drives be mirrored?
No. Shared drives can only be streamed through Drive for desktop.
What happens if I uninstall Google Drive for desktop?
Files stored online remain in Google Drive. Local mirrored files remain on the Windows drive unless you delete them separately.
The Bottom Line
Install Google Drive for desktop from Google, sign in through the browser, and use the Google Drive location in File Explorer. Select Stream files to conserve disk space, or Mirror files when you need a complete offline copy. Before changing modes, deleting a mirrored folder, or disconnecting an account, wait for synchronization to finish and recover anything in Lost and Found.
