On a compatible modified PS5, install or update BlackBox 1.12.0 by removing the previous PPSA01453.ffpkg and BlackBox app, copying the new PPSA01453.ffpkg to /data/homebrew, then running ShadowMount. Do not load blackbox.elf through Payload Manager; version 1.12.0 embeds that file in the package and updates it automatically.
What BlackBox 1.12.0 is—and what it is not
BlackBox is a homebrew storefront and download manager for compatible modified PS5 consoles. It is not Sony system software, a normal PlayStation Store application, or an official firmware updater. The documented 1.12.0 installation method uses a file package named PPSA01453.ffpkg, the console directory /data/homebrew, and ShadowMount to register and install the package.
The project’s documentation says BlackBox does not host game files or copyrighted content, is not a commercial service, and is intended for content to which you have lawful access. You are responsible for complying with local law, licenses, and platform terms. Installing homebrew can also carry operational risks, so use a console and content you are legally permitted to modify or access.

- A PS5 that is compatible with the modified-console environment required by BlackBox. The procedure does not apply to an ordinary, unmodified retail PS5.
- Access to the console’s
/data/homebrewdirectory so you can remove and copy the package. - The BlackBox 1.12.0 release asset from the developer’s official release page.
- ShadowMount available in the same homebrew environment. It is the trigger that registers and installs the copied
.ffpkg. - A way to transfer the release file to the PS5. The documented process does not require a particular brand or model of USB storage.
Before changing an existing installation, make sure the console is in a stable state and that you can repeat the package-transfer step. If the console displays a warning after installation, the release instructions advise restarting the PS5 and running the trigger again.

Install BlackBox 1.12.0 from scratch
Use these steps when BlackBox is not installed, or when you are replacing an older release. The order matters: remove the old package and application before placing the new package in the homebrew directory.

Remove any old package file
Open the file-management method you normally use on the modified PS5 and go to
/data/homebrew. Delete the existingPPSA01453.ffpkgif it is present. Leaving the old file in place can make it unclear which release ShadowMount is registering. -
Uninstall the older BlackBox application
Remove the currently installed older BlackBox version from the console before installing 1.12.0. This avoids leaving an older application registration alongside the new package.

Download the 1.12.0 release asset
Use the developer’s official latest-release page and select the BlackBox 1.12.0 package. Confirm that the downloaded asset is the package named
PPSA01453.ffpkg; do not substitute a different file or an unrelated payload.Rank #2

Copy the package to the required directory
Transfer
PPSA01453.ffpkgto the PS5 and place it directly in/data/homebrew. Check the filename and extension after copying. The package should not be renamed, placed in a nested folder, or left in a temporary download directory. -
Trigger installation with ShadowMount
Run ShadowMount in the modified-console environment. ShadowMount registers the package in
/data/homebrewand starts the BlackBox installation. Wait for the process to finish before launching the application or changing files. -
Restart and repeat the trigger if necessary
If the console shows a warning or an installation error, restart the PS5, confirm that the package is still in
/data/homebrew, and run ShadowMount again. The release instructions specifically recommend this restart-and-retry path for persistent warnings or errors.The Tool Desk

How to update an existing BlackBox installation
An update uses the same package flow as a fresh installation, but the old package and application must be removed first. Do not simply copy 1.12.0 over an existing PPSA01453.ffpkg and assume the console has replaced every component.

PPSA01453.ffpkgfrom/data/homebrew. - Uninstall the currently installed BlackBox application.
- Obtain the BlackBox 1.12.0 release package from the developer’s official release page.
- Copy the new
PPSA01453.ffpkginto/data/homebrew. - Run ShadowMount to register and install it.
- Restart the PS5 and run ShadowMount once more if warnings or errors remain.
Version 1.12.0 contains the blackbox.elf component inside PPSA01453.ffpkg. That is why the release instructions treat the package as the update unit rather than asking you to load a separate ELF file.
Do not load blackbox.elf with Payload Manager
The 1.12.0 release notes give an explicit warning: never use Payload Manager during this installation or update. Do not manually load blackbox.elf through Payload Manager. The ELF is embedded in PPSA01453.ffpkg, and the package updates it automatically when ShadowMount installs the release.
Manual loading can create a mixed state in which the application and its embedded component do not come from the same release. If you already attempted a manual load, return to the documented sequence: remove the old package and application, copy the 1.12.0 package to /data/homebrew, and trigger installation with ShadowMount.
Firmware and download-format support
BlackBox 1.12.0 detects the console’s firmware automatically. The release notes divide download availability by firmware range:

The stated cutoff applies to PS5 .pkg downloads, not to every BlackBox function. On firmware 12.00–13.60, the release notes still list .exfat and .ffpfsc downloads as available. Do not downgrade, alter firmware, or select an incompatible format merely to force a .pkg option.
Installing a downloaded item with ShadowMount
If a downloaded game or other legally obtained content does not install, the 1.12.0 release notes recommend running ShadowMount. Version 1.12.0 adds a ShadowMount shortcut in the Downloads menu, so the trigger can be reached from the same area where you manage downloads.
- Open BlackBox’s Downloads menu after the download has completed.
- Choose the ShadowMount shortcut added in version 1.12.0.
- Allow ShadowMount to register and process the downloaded item.
- Wait for the operation to finish before trying to launch or reinstall the item.
- If the console reports a warning or still does not recognize the item, restart the PS5 and use the shortcut again.
ShadowMount is therefore relevant both to installing the BlackBox application package and to processing downloaded content. It does not change the firmware-format limits listed above.

BlackBox installation versus Sony’s official PS5 update process
These are separate procedures with different files and purposes. BlackBox uses the homebrew package PPSA01453.ffpkg in /data/homebrew and relies on ShadowMount. Sony’s official system-software process uses Sony’s update controls and official update files.

For an official PS5 system update, Sony documents the on-console path as Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony also documents a USB Safe Mode method for official update files, including the PS5UPDATE.PUP file. That process must not be substituted for the BlackBox procedure: a .PUP system update is not a .ffpkg homebrew installation, and copying one to /data/homebrew will not install BlackBox.
What to compare when evaluating another PS5 homebrew downloader
If you are assessing a different homebrew downloader, compare capabilities rather than assuming that all projects use the same package or firmware rules.
- Firmware range: confirm which PS5 firmware versions are supported and whether the application detects firmware automatically.
- File formats: check support for
.pkg,.exfat, and.ffpfsc, and whether availability changes by firmware. - ShadowMount integration: determine whether installation and download processing can be triggered from the application.
- Update mechanism: verify whether the project uses a complete package, an embedded component, or a separate payload.
- Storage targets: check which internal or external destinations the project documents, rather than assuming every downloader handles them identically.
- Language and catalogue coverage: establish which interface languages and catalogues are actually supported.
- Transparency and legal-use statements: look for clear statements about hosted content, lawful access, copyright, and responsibility for compliance.

Is BlackBox 1.12.0 official Sony software?
No. It is a homebrew application for compatible modified PS5 consoles. Sony’s system-software updater is a separate process.
