NPCTalk turns nearby Grand Theft Auto V characters into conversational NPCs: you speak or type a prompt, the character generates an in-world reply, a synthesized voice reads it, and supported tools can trigger actions. The supported example targets Windows Story Mode, not GTA Online. A reliable setup requires GTA V, the normal script-loading components, Git, Python 3.10 or newer, uv, ffmpeg, the .NET SDK 8 or newer, and credentials for whichever speech, language and action services you enable.

Install the game-side loader first, install NPCTalk by one of its supported methods, keep all credentials in environment variables, then bring the system up in stages: health check, typed conversation, push-to-talk, open microphone and finally actions. Do not start GTA Online while a script hook is installed.

What NPCTalk does in GTA V

NPCTalk is a toolkit for making game characters answer in character with generated voices. Its first complete example is GTA V, where the intended flow is to approach people in Los Santos, provide a spoken or typed prompt, receive a contextual answer, hear a cloned or selected voice, and optionally invoke an action. The project describes the example as working with anyone in Los Santos during single-player play.

The official project repository is NPCTalk on GitHub. The repository’s GTA V example is an integration rather than a replacement for the game: GTA V still supplies the world, characters and rendering, while NPCTalk supplies speech recognition, dialogue generation, voice output and action tooling.

Before you install: scope, safety and rights

Use Story Mode only

The supported safety boundary is a single-player game or a server you operate. The project says it does not inject into online games protected by anti-cheat systems and specifically warns never to launch GTA Online with a script hook installed. Keep a separate Story Mode installation or be prepared to remove the loader files before any online session. Treat this as a hard requirement, not an optional precaution.

Use recordings you are allowed to use

Voice cloning requires reference recordings. Use only clips for which you hold the necessary rights or have explicit permission. The project does not commit or publish voice clips, cloned voices, game audio or game dialogue; your own recordings and service accounts remain your responsibility.

Expect hosted services unless you configure otherwise

The documented configuration connects to hosted voice, speech-to-text, dialogue and action services. The presence of a local GTA V script does not make the entire pipeline offline. Network availability, service credentials and provider limits can affect response time and whether a character answers.

Requirements and what each component is for

Requirement Why it is needed Scope
Windows The documented GTA V example and its game-side integration target Windows. Required for the documented example.
GTA V Provides the Story Mode world and characters in which the script runs. Required; use single-player.
Git Downloads the repository and is listed as a project prerequisite. Required by the documented setup.
Python 3.10 or newer Runs the NPCTalk tooling. Required.
uv Installs and runs the Python-based command-line tooling. Required.
ffmpeg Handles audio conversion used by the voice and speech pipeline. Required.
.NET SDK 8 or newer Builds or runs the GTA V example’s .NET components. Required by the GTA V example.
ScriptHookV Loads native script support into the game. Required for the game-side mod path.
ScriptHookVDotNet 3, version 3.6 or newer Loads C# scripts used by the GTA V example. Required for the C# script path.
Microphone Captures spoken prompts when using push-to-talk or open-microphone input. Optional for typed-input bring-up; required for voice input.

Install the GTA V script loader

NPCTalk’s conversational process cannot interact with GTA V until the game can load scripts. The corroborating installation procedure uses ScriptHookV and ScriptHookVDotNet 3.

  1. Locate the folder containing GTA5.exe. This is the game’s main installation directory, not the scripts subfolder.
  2. Copy ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll into that same folder. NativeTrainer.asi is optional and is not required for NPCTalk.
  3. Install ScriptHookVDotNet 3, using version 3.6 or newer, and place its loader files in the same directory that contains GTA5.exe.
  4. Create a folder named scripts in the GTA V root if it does not already exist. C# mods loaded by ScriptHookVDotNet use this folder.
  5. Do not test this installation by launching GTA Online. Start Story Mode only after the files are in place.

If GTA V starts without the NPCTalk behavior later, first recheck the root location and filenames. A common configuration error is putting the loader DLLs inside scripts instead of beside GTA5.exe.

Choose an NPCTalk installation route

The project lists four supported ways to obtain its tooling. Choose one route; installing the same package multiple ways makes it harder to know which executable you are running.

Route Commands or action When it fits
Codex plugin codex plugin marketplace add christos-antono/NPCTalk
codex plugin add npctalk@npctalk
Use when you want NPCTalk available as a Codex plugin.
Skills package npx skills add https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk Use when your workflow is based on skills packages.
Git clone git clone https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk, then start the agent in the cloned directory. Best when you want to inspect or modify the project files locally.
Standalone CLI uv tool install git+https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk Use when you want the command-line tool outside a working clone.

Verify the command is available

After installation, open a new terminal so your shell sees any updated executable path. Run the project’s health command before opening GTA V:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npctalk health

The documented behavior is for npctalk health to wait through a voice-server cold start and report whether the service becomes available. A delay during the first run can therefore be normal; an immediate failure usually means a missing credential, an unavailable service or an incomplete installation.

Configure service credentials safely

NPCTalk documents environment variables as the place for keys. Do not put secrets in source files, mod scripts, screenshots, or a repository. Set only the variables for services you intend to use, and restart the terminal or agent after changing them.

Variable or setup Purpose Configuration detail
NPCVOICE_TOKEN Authenticates the Modal voice server. Run modal setup and provide the token from the npcvoice-auth secret.
FAL_KEY Authenticates fal speech-to-text, MiniMax voices and MCP components. Set it as an environment variable in the shell used to run NPCTalk.
CEREBRAS_API_KEY Authenticates Cerebras NPC dialogue generation. Set it before starting the agent or CLI.
TYPESAFE_API_KEY Authenticates TypeSafe actions and spoken orders. Needed when you enable those action features.

Git, Python, uv and ffmpeg remain local prerequisites even when voice or language processing is hosted remotely. If a provider is not configured, leave its feature out of the first test instead of trying to substitute an undocumented endpoint.

Bring NPCTalk up in the safest order

Adding every feature at once makes it difficult to tell whether a failure comes from the game loader, audio input, dialogue generation or action handling. Follow this sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Recon the game. Confirm that you are using the intended GTA V version, that the loader files are in the folder containing GTA5.exe, that ScriptHookVDotNet 3.6 or newer is present, and that you are working in Story Mode.
  2. Select engines. Decide which voice server, speech-to-text engine, dialogue model and action engine you will use. Set only the corresponding environment variables.
  3. Start voice services outside the game. From the terminal in which the NPCTalk command is available, run npctalk health. Wait for its cold-start check to complete.
  4. Test speech output independently. Run npctalk say with the project’s documented input options. The command writes a WAV file and reports time to first audio, giving you a way to test voice generation without GTA V in the loop.
  5. Prepare reference voices legally. Supply recordings that you are authorized to use. Keep the source clips organized and do not publish or commit them with the project.
  6. Get one NPC answering typed text. Start with text input and one character. This isolates dialogue generation and voice playback from microphone permissions and speech recognition.
  7. Add push-to-talk. Once typed interaction works, bind a deliberate key or control for microphone capture. Test that the application receives one utterance and stops recording when released.
  8. Try open-microphone input. Enable it only after push-to-talk is reliable. Open-mic mode can capture game audio or unrelated speech, so verify the recognized text before adding more features.
  9. Add persona and scene context. Provide the character’s persona, relevant scene facts and that character’s own line samples. Keep the first persona small enough that you can identify which context changed an answer.
  10. Add physical actions and spoken orders. Enable action tools after conversation and voice playback are stable. Confirm that an order produces the intended in-game effect before combining several actions.
  11. Verify in the real game. Approach an NPC in Story Mode, speak or type one short prompt, and check the complete chain: input, response, audio and on-screen or in-world behavior.
  12. Log timing. Record the time from input completion to first audible audio and note cold starts separately from warmed-up requests.
  13. Measure quality before making claims. Voice similarity, recognition errors and latency depend on the model, reference clip, sampling settings and run. Treat your measurements as configuration-specific.

Typed input, push-to-talk and open microphone

Typed input

Typed prompts are the recommended first milestone because they remove microphone permissions, room noise and speech-recognition errors. If an NPC answers typed text and the WAV test succeeds, the core dialogue and voice path is working. This mode also lets you play without a microphone.

The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box.

Push-to-talk

Push-to-talk is the controlled microphone mode. It limits capture to an intentional press, which reduces accidental prompts and makes it easier to compare what you said with what the speech-to-text service received. Confirm that Windows has granted the terminal or agent access to the selected microphone before troubleshooting NPCTalk itself.

Open microphone

Open-microphone input continuously listens for speech according to the project’s configured behavior. Add it last. If responses contain words from the game soundtrack or nearby conversations, return to push-to-talk and test with a shorter, quieter recording.

A microphone is therefore optional during installation but required for spoken-input modes. A generic USB microphone for PC is sufficient as an accessory category; the project does not establish a particular model as a requirement.

Voice generation and what the published measurements mean

The repository reports an undated project evaluation for one character, Lamar, across ten test lines. Speaker similarity was measured against 60 held-out real clips, and word error rate (WER) measures transcription or spoken-word mismatch. These are project measurements, not a universal ranking of voice systems; the README notes that one early result failed to survive a second run and that the evaluation process caught it.

Voice configuration Voice match Word error Qualification
ElevenLabs instant clone 0.612 10.5% Project result; year not stated.
Fish Audio Drama 3, default settings 0.643 7.1% Project result; year not stated.
Drama 3, tuned sampling, one take 0.660 7.9% Project result; year not stated.
Drama 3, best of eight takes, checked 0.704 8.6% Project result; year not stated.
Fish Audio S2 Pro with its best reference clip 0.707 5.6% Project result; year not stated.
S2 Pro fine-tuned on the character 0.785 7.5% Project result; year not stated.

The figures show why a single score is not enough: the highest voice-match value and the lowest word-error value belong to different configurations. Reference-clip quality, sampling choices, fine-tuning and the exact line set all matter. If you publish your own result, state the character, number of lines, comparison clips, model settings and date.

Keeping the game responsive

Use the time-to-first-audio value reported by npctalk say as a baseline, then measure the in-game path separately. A cold-start request can be much slower than a warmed service, so record both conditions. Log at least the input mode, provider, model, reference clip, first-audio delay and whether an action was requested. Do not present one successful run as a general latency guarantee.

Start with short prompts and one nearby character. If the system feels slow, first determine whether the delay occurs before speech recognition, during dialogue generation, while the voice server starts, or while audio is transferred back to the game. Changing several providers at once removes the evidence you need to identify the bottleneck.

Troubleshooting by symptom

npctalk health never becomes ready

  • Check that the terminal can see the installed npctalk command.
  • Confirm that NPCVOICE_TOKEN is present when using the Modal voice server and that the npcvoice-auth secret was configured through modal setup.
  • Verify network access and wait for the documented cold-start period before treating the check as failed.

npctalk say fails or produces no WAV

  • Run the health check first; voice generation depends on the service being available.
  • Check the relevant FAL_KEY or other provider variable and make sure it is set in the same shell that runs the command.
  • Confirm ffmpeg is installed and available on the system path.

GTA V loads but no NPCTalk behavior appears

  • Verify that ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll are beside GTA5.exe, not only inside scripts.
  • Confirm ScriptHookVDotNet 3.6 or newer is installed in the same game root.
  • Ensure a scripts folder exists for the C# mod files.
  • Test in Story Mode and do not use an online session with the script hook installed.

Typed dialogue works but the microphone does not

  • Continue using typed text while checking operating-system microphone permission and the selected input device.
  • Return to push-to-talk before testing open-microphone mode.
  • Compare the recognized text with your spoken words; an incorrect transcript points to the speech-to-text or audio-input stage, not the NPC persona.

The NPC speaks but does not perform an action

  • Confirm that TYPESAFE_API_KEY is configured if you enabled TypeSafe actions or spoken orders.
  • Test one documented action after dialogue works, rather than issuing several orders in one prompt.
  • Check whether the request is being interpreted as conversation only; action tools are a separate stage in the bring-up sequence.

The voice sounds unlike the reference

  • Use only rights-cleared recordings and keep the character’s own samples separate from unrelated speakers.
  • Record which model, reference clip and sampling settings produced the result.
  • Compare several takes instead of assuming the first generated line represents the model’s best quality.

How NPCTalk compares with another GTA V AI-NPC project

If you evaluate alternatives, compare capabilities rather than marketing labels. The useful questions are whether inference is local or hosted, whether input is typed only or supports a microphone, how voice cloning handles permission and reference recordings, whether action tools are available, whether any part works offline, how many installation layers are required, whether the project is explicitly limited to Story Mode, and whether it publishes reproducible quality measurements. NPCTalk’s documented GTA V path uses hosted service credentials, supports typed and microphone workflows, includes action tooling, and publishes the Lamar measurements above; its safety guidance is single-player or a server you run.

Removal and online-session checklist

Before an online session, close GTA V and remove or disable the script-hook files from the game root according to your normal mod-management practice. At minimum, do not leave dinput8.dll, ScriptHookV.dll or ScriptHookVDotNet loaders active when launching GTA Online. Keep NPCTalk credentials out of public logs and repositories, and retain voice recordings only as long as your rights and project need require.
