There is an unofficial Android port of ICO, but it is not a legitimate “full game APK.” The documented port is an Android build of a community decompilation. Its downloads contain the program only, not the game. To use it lawfully, you need your own PAL ICO PlayStation 2 disc (code SCES-50760), a disc image made from that disc, and the APK from the project’s own release page. Android may also require a temporary permission to install an app downloaded outside Google Play.
The safest approach is to treat the APK as a controlled sideload: obtain it only from the nathanialf/ico-pc release page, keep Android security protections enabled, grant install permission only to the browser or file manager you used, and turn that permission off again after installation.
What the Android ICO port actually is
ICO began as a PlayStation 2 game. Sony’s release announcement describes ICO and Shadow of the Colossus as PS2 titles and discusses their later remaster for PlayStation 3. That history matters because there is no established, current Sony Android storefront release to install. The Android option discussed here is a community project, not an official Sony mobile edition.

The project’s documentation is explicit that it is not connected to Sony Interactive Entertainment or Team Ico. It is an Android build of a decompilation, and the project does not distribute the copyrighted game content. The application is therefore only one part of the setup.

That distinction separates a safe, lawful installation from the “full ICO APK” listings that circulate on download sites. A package claiming to contain the complete game, a BIOS, or an unlocked copy conflicts with the project’s own description and creates additional malware and copyright risks.
What you need before installing
A compatible Android phone
Check the current release notes for the port and compare them with your phone before downloading. Compatibility and performance depend on the particular build and device. The cited documentation does not provide one universal minimum specification, so do not assume that every Android handset will run the same way. Keep enough free storage for the APK and your legally created game image, although the documentation does not state a single storage number.
Your own PAL ICO disc
The documented port requires the PAL edition identified as SCES-50760. Confirm both the region and the code printed on the disc or its case. Owning a different regional release does not establish that it is supported by these instructions. If you buy a used disc, ask for a clear photograph of the code rather than relying only on a listing title that says “ICO PS2.”

The installed program needs game data supplied separately from the APK. Create an image from your own disc using a lawful, trusted process and keep that image for personal use. The project does not provide the image, and a preloaded download from a random site is not an equivalent substitute.
Android security controls left on
Keep Google Play Protect and your phone’s normal security updates enabled. You are making an exception for one manually downloaded application, not disabling Android security globally. Have your screen lock and device backup in place before sideloading any software.

How to obtain the APK without taking unnecessary risks
- Start at the project’s own repository. Open the
nathanialf/ico-pcGitHub repository and use its Releases link. Do not begin with a search result that promises a “full APK,” “ROM,” or “one-click” installation. - Select the Android build. In the release assets, choose the file whose name ends in
-android.apk. The suffix identifies the Android package described by the project’s instructions. - Read the release notes. Check the release date, supported data, touch-control information, and Android-specific fixes shown for that build. Exact behavior can change between releases.
- Keep the original file. Do not pass the APK through a repackaging site, “mod” installer, or mirror that changes its name or contents. If the download came from somewhere other than the repository’s release page, delete it and start over.
- Scan and verify the source. Let Play Protect and your device’s security tools examine the file. A clean scan cannot prove that an unofficial build is risk-free, but bypassing those checks removes a useful warning layer.
Consumer-safety guidance from the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office, Ofcom, Competition and Markets Authority, and Financial Conduct Authority advises obtaining apps from official stores where possible and warns that altered applications from less reputable sources can take control of a handset, send messages, or incur charges. Because this port is not presented through a normal Android store, source control and permission discipline are especially important.
How to create and use the game image legally
The project’s instructions say that you need your own PAL disc and an image file made from it. They do not authorize downloading someone else’s image. ScummVM’s official game-data guidance expresses the same principle: obtain game files from original media or legitimate distributors and maintain a strict anti-piracy stance.
- Verify the physical disc. Confirm that it is the PAL ICO release with code
SCES-50760. - Use a trusted imaging method. Use hardware and software you understand, and keep the resulting file private. The exact imaging procedure is not specified in the port’s cited instructions, so follow the documentation for your operating system or optical-drive tool rather than a random “ROM download” tutorial.
- Preserve the original. Keep the disc and a backup of the image in a safe location. Do not upload the image or share it through file-hosting, torrent, or ROM sites.
- Point the port to that image. During first launch, select the image when the application asks for the game files. The APK does not supply these files for you.
A BIOS is a separate issue from the game image. The cited ICO port instructions require the supported disc data but do not state that you must download or install a PlayStation 2 BIOS. Do not accept a package advertised as “ICO plus BIOS included”; that is a warning sign, not a missing prerequisite.
Step-by-step Android installation
1. Download the release asset
From the repository’s Releases page, download the asset ending in -android.apk. Use the browser’s download history to confirm the file came from that release page. If a second site offers a “smaller,” “pre-patched,” or “game included” version, do not use it.
2. Open the APK
Open the completed download from your browser or file manager. Android treats an APK obtained outside Google Play as an unknown-source installation. A warning or blocked-install screen is normal for this type of file; it does not mean that the application is official.

3. Grant one-time install permission
If Android displays a message that your browser or file manager is not allowed to install unknown apps, select the option to open that app’s settings. On many phones the path is Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, followed by the browser or file manager you used. Labels and menu locations vary by Android version and manufacturer.

Enable Allow from this source only for that specific app. Return to the installer, review the package name, and select Install. Never enable the setting for every application and never turn off Play Protect merely to force an installation.
4. Revoke the permission after installation
When the installation finishes, return to the same permission screen and switch Allow from this source off. The installed application will remain available; the browser or file manager simply loses permission to install additional APKs. This is the safest default for a one-time sideload.
5. Launch from the app list
Open the Android app drawer and start ICO from its installed icon. If Android offers an update from an unrelated site, decline it and check the project’s release page instead.
6. Select your game image
When the port requests game data, browse to the image created from your own PAL SCES-50760 disc. Do not choose a downloaded “preloaded” file. If the application cannot find the image, verify the file location and that it was created from the supported disc.

7. Configure controls
The release notes document touch controls and Android-specific fixes. Use the on-screen controls first, then adjust their layout or sensitivity if the build exposes those options. An external Android controller may be useful, but confirm that the current release supports your controller and Android version before buying an accessory; the cited material does not promise universal controller compatibility.
8. Test before changing security settings
Start a game, move through a short section, load a save, and confirm that audio, video, controls, and saving work. Do not respond to a crash by installing a replacement APK from an unverified mirror. Check the release notes, confirm the disc image, and troubleshoot one variable at a time.
Recognizing unsafe ICO APK listings
Reject a download immediately if its description uses any of these claims:
- “ICO full APK” or “full game included.”
- “ROM included,” “BIOS included,” or “preloaded ISO.”
- “One-click unlocked,” “mod menu,” or a promise to bypass Android security.
- A mirror that changes the release filename, wraps the APK in another installer, or demands unrelated permissions.
- A site that requires a survey, paid text message, browser extension, or multiple downloads before revealing the file.
These offers contradict the project’s statement that its downloads contain no game data. A modified package can also request invasive access, send messages, subscribe you to paid services, or otherwise incur charges. Uninstall it, revoke any install permission, and review your account and carrier statements if you installed one.

“App not installed”
- Confirm that the file really ends in
-android.apkand was downloaded completely. - Delete duplicate or partial downloads and obtain the asset again from the repository release page.
- Check that Android has enough free storage and that your device permits installation of this package type.
- Remove an older conflicting build only if you have backed up its saves and understand that uninstalling can remove app data.
Android keeps blocking the installer
Return to the browser or file manager that opened the APK and enable its install permission temporarily. If the setting is unavailable, a device administrator, work profile, parental-control policy, or manufacturer security layer may be enforcing the block. Do not work around an organization-managed policy on a device you do not control.

The app opens but asks for game files
This is expected: the APK does not contain ICO. Select the image made from your own supported PAL disc. If you only have a different regional disc, the cited instructions do not establish compatibility for it.
The game crashes or performs poorly
Performance varies by device and build. Recheck the release notes, close other demanding applications, restart the phone, and test again with the documented touch controls. Do not infer that a crash proves the image is defective until you have confirmed the image came from the required disc and that the file is stored where the app can read it.
Touch controls are difficult to use
Use the control options documented for your release and rotate the phone only if the build supports that orientation. A physical controller can improve precision, but support is release- and device-dependent. Avoid installing a third-party “controller fix APK.”
The app works, but a later update breaks it
Record the release you installed and read the newer release notes before updating. Keep a copy of the working APK and your saves in a safe place. If you roll back, download the earlier asset from the project’s release history rather than from an APK archive of unknown origin.
Official-console and community-Android routes compared
The two legitimate ways to play are not equivalent. The original console route uses the authorized PS2 release and avoids Android sideloading; the community route offers Android convenience but requires a supported disc image and a manually installed, unofficial build.

Safety checklist before you play
- Confirm the project is independent and that you are not mistaking it for an official Sony Android release.
- Use the repository’s own Releases page and the asset ending in
-android.apk. - Keep Play Protect, Android updates, and device backups enabled.
- Grant unknown-app permission only to the browser or file manager used for this installation.
- Turn that permission off immediately afterward.
- Use a PAL
SCES-50760disc that you own and create the image yourself through a lawful process. - Reject packages advertising a full game, ROM, BIOS, unlocked copy, or one-click bypass.
- Keep the APK, image, and saves private; do not upload or redistribute copyrighted game data.
- Check the release notes before changing builds or troubleshooting a crash.
Bottom line: is the ICO Android port safe to install?
It can be approached safely, but only as an unofficial sideload with your own game data. Download the documented -android.apk asset from the project’s release page, verify that your disc is the PAL SCES-50760 edition, create the image yourself, and disable the browser’s unknown-source permission after installation. Any listing that supplies the complete game, a BIOS, or a preloaded image is outside that safe, documented workflow.
