You do not need REDkit to play most user-created mods. Install each mod in The Witcher 3’s mods folder, keep the folder name beginning with mod, and follow the mod author’s version and dependency notes. For a small, carefully chosen list, manual installation is the clearest method. Use Vortex when you need deployment, load-order controls, or easier rollback. Steam Workshop subscriptions use a separate directory and should not be mixed casually with files in the game’s mods folder.
Before changing anything, confirm whether you run the current game version and which edition you own, back up saves, and be prepared to disable mods after a game update. Mods can cause crashes, launch failures, broken quests, incorrect interface elements, and problems that remain in existing save files.
What you need before installing a mod
Use the PC edition of The Witcher 3 from Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG. Read the individual mod page completely before downloading: the required game version, edition, dependencies, installation method, and any incompatibilities are more important than the mod’s name. A mod made for one major game revision or edition may not work correctly on another.

Keep an older save from before any mod that changes quests, world state, or progression.
- Version information: note the game version shown by your launcher and compare it with every mod’s stated compatibility. Do not assume that a mod still works after a game patch.
- Dependencies: install every library, Community Patch component, framework, or other requirement listed by the author. A missing requirement can look like a load-order problem.
- A controlled starting set: add a few mods at a time. If something fails, a small change set makes the cause identifiable.
REDkit is optional for players. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a toolkit primarily for creating mods. It is available free to owners of the PC game through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, and requires an installed PC copy of The Witcher 3. You need the game itself to play user-created content; you do not need REDkit merely to install and run ordinary mods. More than 18,000 people participated in the REDkit beta, but that figure is a beta-participation count, not a measure of mod quality or compatibility.

Choose an installation method

No method is universally best. Compatibility depends on the mod, your game version and edition, and whether its files are installed through the same workflow as the rest of your collection.
Install a mod manually
1. Find the game directory
Open the installation directory for The Witcher 3. The exact parent path depends on your launcher and the drive you selected, so use the launcher’s library or installation-management option if you cannot locate it. In that directory, create a folder named mods if it does not already exist.
2. Copy the mod into the correct folder
Extract the downloaded archive only when the mod’s instructions tell you to do so. Copy the mod’s folder or files into the game’s mods folder, preserving the structure supplied by the author. The game loads mod folders whose names begin with mod; a folder without that prefix is ignored. For example, a supplied folder named modExample should remain modExample, not be renamed to a generic title.
Do not blindly copy an archive’s outer wrapper folder. Open it first and check whether the actual mod... directory is one level deeper. If the author provides a special path, configuration file, or an installation script, follow those instructions instead of forcing every file into the same location.

3. Install requirements before launching
Place required framework or patch components in the locations specified by their authors. Some mods include scripts, XML files, textures, or other resources that must be merged with existing content; others are self-contained. Never overwrite an existing file merely because its name looks similar unless the instructions explicitly require it and you have a backup.
4. Start with a test save
Launch the game and load a copy of a save rather than your only active playthrough. Check the title screen, a controlled in-game location, and any feature the mod changes. If the game fails before the menu appears, remove the newest mod first and test again.
Manage mods with Vortex
1. Connect Vortex to your account and game
- Install and open Vortex.
- Sign in to your Nexus Mods account from Vortex when prompted.
- Open the Games section, find The Witcher 3, and select Manage.
- Confirm the detected game directory. If Vortex points to the wrong installation, browse to the directory that contains the game executable and its
modsfolder.
2. Install or import your mods
Download a mod through Vortex where that option is provided, or use Vortex’s manual-download workflow for an archive saved on your computer. Vortex does not automatically know about folders that you unpacked directly into the game’s mods folder before setting up Vortex. For those files, either add the entries to mod.settings as instructed by the Vortex guide, or package the mod correctly and reinstall it through Vortex. Refresh Vortex after importing and verify that the mod appears in the managed list.

3. Deploy every change
After installing, enabling, disabling, or changing a rule, click Deploy Mods. Deployment is the step that applies Vortex’s current plan to the game directory; merely seeing a mod in the list does not guarantee that its files are active.

4. Resolve the order shown by Vortex
Vortex can manage the Witcher 3 load order. When two mods change the same resource, the topmost mod wins the conflict according to the Vortex guide. Script Merger-generated merges should load first. Inspect conflict indicators rather than accepting a warning without reading it, and set explicit rules when a mod author specifies which file must win.
Keep one management system authoritative for each file. A collection partly deployed by Vortex and partly edited by hand is harder to audit, and an old manually installed folder can continue to affect the game even after you disable a similarly named Vortex entry.
Use Steam Workshop carefully
Steam Workshop subscriptions are stored in Steam’s workshop directory, not in the game’s normal mods directory. That separation makes Workshop convenient for subscribing and unsubscribing, but it also means that a Workshop copy and a manually installed copy of similar content can both be active. CD PROJEKT RED warns that mixing Workshop subscriptions with manually installed mods can create unforeseen conflicts.
When diagnosing a problem, record your subscriptions, unsubscribe from the newest item, and test with the manual and Workshop sources separated. Do not copy Workshop files into the game’s mods folder unless the specific mod documentation tells you to; doing so creates a second installation to maintain.

Control load order with mods.settings
Without explicit rules, mods are usually loaded alphabetically from the game’s mods directory. The game also supports a text file named mods.settings in DocumentsThe Witcher 3. Each mod entry has an Enabled value and a Priority value.

Make a backup of mods.settings before editing it. Change one entry at a time, save the file as plain text with the exact filename, and keep the mod’s spelling consistent with its installed folder. If the game ignores your change, check that the file is in the correct Documents location and that the values are numeric rather than words such as “true” or “false.”
Fix script conflicts with Script Merger
Several mods can edit the same Witcher 3 scripts. The result may be a startup error, a missing feature, or a game that reaches the menu but fails when a quest or interaction begins. When a mod’s instructions identify a script conflict, install and run Script Merger, then create a merge for the conflicting files.

- Open Script Merger and let it scan the installed mod files.
- Review each conflict group. Choose the files or lines from the mods that should remain, following the authors’ compatibility notes.
- Create the merged script and verify that the generated output is placed where the tool expects it.
- If you use Vortex, ensure the Script Merger-generated merge is enabled and placed first in the load order.
- Launch the game with a copied save and test the affected feature before continuing your main playthrough.
A merge is not a universal fix. If the conflict involves incompatible game versions, missing dependencies, mutually exclusive features, or different quest structures, combining files can make the result less stable. Remove the newest change and test each mod alone when the merger reports an unresolved or ambiguous conflict.

Check compatibility after every game update
Use the game version and edition requested by the mod author, not simply the date on which the mod was uploaded. Recheck the mod page after a patch, and update dependencies before updating a dependent mod. A collection that worked on one revision may fail after the executable, scripts, or bundled content changes.
Avoid adding or removing mods that alter quest structure during an active playthrough. Such changes can leave quest flags or other consequences in a save even after the mod is disabled. Keep a clean, unmodded save from before the change so you can return to a known state.
Troubleshoot crashes, missing content, and broken saves
The game will not launch or crashes immediately
- Disable or unsubscribe from the most recently added or updated mod.
- If you use Vortex, disable the entry and click Deploy Mods; if you installed manually, remove only the corresponding folder after backing it up.
- Check that every mod matches the installed game version and edition.
- Look for a missing requirement or a failed Script Merger output.
- Test with all third-party mods disabled. Re-enable them in small groups to identify the trigger.
A feature, item, or interface element is missing
- Confirm that the mod is enabled in Vortex or has
Enabled=1inmods.settings. - Check load order and apply the author’s required priority rule.
- Inspect conflicts for another mod replacing the same resource.
- Verify that the required Community Patch or other dependency is installed.
- Make sure the folder name begins with
modand that you did not leave the real mod folder inside an extra archive directory.
A quest stops progressing
Disable mods that change quests, scripts, or world progression and load an earlier save. If the issue disappears, notify the mod creator with your game version, edition, mod list, and reproduction steps. Do not continue saving over the affected file while you investigate; the support guidance warns that mod-related consequences can remain in saves.

Problems remain after disabling a mod
Unsubscribe or remove the mod, then test from an earlier save made before it was active. If third-party PC mods were installed outside the game’s in-game menu, CD PROJEKT RED support directs players to perform a clean install when appropriate. A clean installation removes leftover files that a simple uninstall can miss, but preserve saves and configuration backups before beginning.
CD PROJEKT RED’s support position is explicit: “Please note that while mods are officially supported, we’re unable to provide game support if the issue you’re encountering stems from mod usage.” The practical implication is to isolate the mod set first, document what changed, and contact the mod creator when the fault disappears with the mod disabled.
A maintenance routine that prevents most mod failures
- Keep a spreadsheet or text list of installed mods, versions, dependencies, and installation method.
- Back up saves and
mods.settingsbefore adding a group of files. - Install one or a few related mods, deploy or launch, and test before expanding the collection.
- After a game update, disable the collection until each mod author confirms compatibility.
- Keep manual files and Vortex-managed files distinguishable; do not assume disabling one removes the other.
- When removing a mod, use a save from before that mod changed quests or persistent world data.
For most players, the reliable pattern is simple: manual installation for a small, transparent set; Vortex for a larger set that you are willing to import and deploy systematically; and Workshop subscriptions kept separate from both. REDkit is for making content, not a prerequisite for playing it.
