The safest way to install Ready or Not mods is to choose one management method and keep every mod in a single, documented location. Use the in-game mod.io browser for convenience, copy a verified .pak file into the game’s Content/Paks folder for maximum transparency, or use Vortex when you need deployment and load-order controls. Mixing those methods without checking for duplicate files is the most common source of conflicts.
Choose the installation method that fits your setup
Ready or Not supports three practical workflows. The official mod.io integration lets you find, install, and remove supported content without leaving the game. A manual installation gives you direct visibility into every file. Vortex adds automated deployment and load-order management through its Ready or Not extension and the Unreal Engine Mod Installer.

Pick one as your primary workflow. If you use mod.io for one package and Vortex or manual copying for another, inspect all active locations before assuming a mod has been removed.
Prepare the game before installing anything
Confirm the game location
In Steam, open your Library, right-click Ready or Not, choose Manage, then Browse local files. The folder should contain the ReadyOrNot directory. Manual installs ultimately use ReadyOrNot/Content/Paks.

Back up your baseline
- Close the game before copying, deploying, updating, or deleting a mod.
- Keep a simple text list of every added filename, its source, and the date installed.
- Do not overwrite a stock game file with a downloaded file. Mod packages should be additional files, normally ending in
.pak. - Read the mod’s description for the supported game version, dependencies, and known conflicts before installation.
Understand the active locations
The troubleshooting guidance for Ready or Not identifies the main Paks directory, its ~mods subfolder, and mod.io-managed files as locations that can contain active content. A package left in one location can continue loading even after you remove what appears to be the same package from another location.
Install mods with the in-game mod.io integration
VOID Interactive announced mod.io as an official in-game way to search for and download Ready or Not mods. The announcement specifically described support for .pak mods, including weapons, skins, and artificial-intelligence changes. The same integration can remove supported mods later.
Install a mod
- Launch Ready or Not and open the mod.io or Mods menu from the game’s main interface.
- Sign in or complete the account connection requested by the menu.
- Search for the mod and open its details page. Check its game-version notes and requirements.
- Choose the install or subscribe action shown by the current menu, then wait for the download and extraction to finish.
- Restart the game if the mod’s instructions require it. Test the mod in a controlled session before adding another package.
Remove a mod
- Return to the same in-game mod menu.
- Open your installed or subscribed items.
- Select the mod and choose the remove or unsubscribe option.
- Restart the game and verify that the content is gone before troubleshooting another package.
What to do with the documented mod.io folder
Older official documentation described mod.io files being extracted from C:/Users/Public/mod.io/3791/mods into steamapps\common\Ready Or Not\ReadyOrNot\Content\Paks. Treat that as historical implementation documentation, not as a replacement for the current in-game workflow. The storage implementation can change; use the game’s menu when it is available, and inspect the resulting game folders only when diagnosing a conflict.

Install a downloaded archive manually
Manual installation is useful when a creator supplies an archive outside the in-game catalog or when you need an exact record of the files on disk. It is also the easiest method to audit, provided you keep the archive and a removal list.
Step 1: download the correct archive
Use a source that clearly identifies Ready or Not and states the package’s current compatibility. Read the installation notes before extracting anything. A file intended for another Unreal Engine game, an obsolete game build, or a different mod manager may not work even if it has a .pak extension.

Step 2: extract the archive completely
- Save the downloaded archive outside the game folder, such as in a temporary downloads directory.
- Extract it with your archive utility rather than copying the compressed file itself into
Paks. - Open the extracted folder and locate the payload. The final package should be a
.pakfile, not another archive nested inside the first one. - If the archive contains several files, read its instructions before copying. Some packages include configuration, audio, movie, voice-over, or other assets that must follow a particular layout.
Step 3: copy the package to the Paks directory
Open the game’s local folder and go to ReadyOrNot/Content/Paks/. Copy the extracted .pak file there, alongside the stock files whose names begin with pakchunk0-Windows.pak. Do not place the archive in a parent folder and assume the game will unpack it automatically.
Step 4: record and test
Write down the exact filename you copied. Launch the game, test the feature in an appropriate mode, and restart once before installing another package. If the game fails to launch, your filename record lets you remove the newest addition without guessing.
Use Vortex for deployment and load order
The current Ready or Not Vortex extension describes itself as adding mod management and load-order support. The listing records version 1.3.0 and a last-updated date of 6 October 2026. Vortex is optional; it is not required for mod.io or a manual .pak copy.
Install the required tools
- Install Vortex.
- Install the Ready or Not extension from the extension’s listing.
- Install Unreal Engine Mod Installer when the extension requests it. The extension uses that installer to handle Unreal Engine package deployment.
Connect Ready or Not to Vortex
- Open Vortex and select Games.
- Find Ready or Not and choose Manage.
- Follow the extension’s prompts to identify the game folder.
- Restart Vortex when prompted.
- If the extension reports that Unreal Engine Mod Installer is missing, select Fix, install the dependency, and restart Vortex again.
Install and deploy a mod
- Download a compatible mod archive through your chosen source or through Vortex’s supported download workflow.
- Open Vortex’s Mods tab and confirm that the package appears in the list.
- Check the displayed target and file contents. The extension supports several target types, including binaries, FMOD assets, movies, voice-over, sortable Unreal Engine paks, configuration, save games, and the root game folder.
- Choose Deploy Mods. Accept the elevation prompt if Windows requests permission.
- Wait for deployment to finish, then launch Ready or Not and test the mod.
A package shown as downloaded but not deployed is not installed. If the mod is missing from the game-mods folder, use Deploy Mods again and check for an error in Vortex before changing files manually.
Understand Vortex’s ~mods target
Sortable Unreal Engine pak files are handled under ReadyOrNot\Content\Paks\~mods by the extension. This differs from a simple manual copy into the main Paks directory. Do not create duplicate copies in both locations unless the mod’s instructions explicitly require it; duplicate packages can make load-order diagnosis harder.

Keep load order and file locations under control
Ready or Not does not become easier to diagnose when the same mod exists in multiple systems. Maintain one inventory with the mod name, filename, installation method, target folder, version, and any dependency.

Load-order behavior depends on how the packages modify the same assets. A later-loading package can override an earlier change, while two incompatible edits can produce missing content or a crash. Vortex gives you a place to manage sortable Unreal Engine paks; manual users should follow the creator’s documented filename or ordering instructions rather than renaming packages at random.
Give maps and artificial-intelligence changes extra scrutiny
Custom maps may overwrite global artificial-intelligence parameters. If a map works by itself but causes unusual behavior when an AI tweak is installed, test those packages separately and keep the one that changes global parameters in mind when deciding load order.
Audit all three sources during diagnosis
- Inspect the main
ReadyOrNot/Content/Paksdirectory for manually copied packages. - Inspect
ReadyOrNot/Content/Paks/~modsfor Vortex-managed or sortable packages. - Review the mod.io installation or subscription list and any files it has placed in the game’s content folders.
Remove or disable only one copy at a time, then launch the game. This prevents a hidden duplicate from making a removed mod appear to be active.
Update safely after a Ready or Not patch
Game updates can change assets or loading behavior even when a mod’s filename remains unchanged. Before updating a large collection, capture your inventory and note which packages have been confirmed for the new build.

- Let Steam finish the Ready or Not update.
- Temporarily disable or remove nonessential mods, especially packages that alter maps, AI, weapons, or core files.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch the unmodded game once. This separates a damaged stock installation from a mod compatibility problem.
- Re-enable or reinstall mods that identify support for the new game version, testing after each change.
Verification restores or reacquires official files; it does not make an obsolete third-party package compatible. Keep your mod inventory so you can identify which package was built for the previous version.
Find the mod that is crashing the game
The reliable isolation procedure is slower than deleting random files, but it preserves evidence and identifies conflicts that involve two otherwise functional mods.
- Close Ready or Not and your mod manager.
- Remove or disable every non-stock mod, including packages in the main
Paksfolder, the~modsfolder, and mod.io-managed content. - Launch the game once. If it still fails, verify Steam files and investigate the unmodded installation.
- If the clean launch succeeds, close the game and enable one mod.
- Restart the game and test the same scenario after each change.
- When the crash returns, record the last package enabled. Disable it and test the previously working set again to distinguish a bad package from an interaction between two packages.
For a suspected interaction, keep the first package enabled and add the second by itself. Repeat with the remaining packages until the smallest failing combination is known. Report that exact combination to the creators or remove one of the conflicting changes.

Do not delete a weapon or item mod while its item remains equipped. The saved loadout can still reference the missing asset and prevent entry or produce an error.
- Reinstall the same mod so the game can load the item again.
- Start Ready or Not and unequip the modded weapon or item from every relevant loadout.
- Exit the game normally.
- Remove the mod through mod.io, Vortex, or your manual file record.
- Launch again and confirm that the loadout opens without the item.
If the modded loadout still prevents entry, the troubleshooting guidance identifies ModData.sav as a file that may need to be cleared. Treat that as a recovery step: back up the file first, understand that saved mod state can be lost, and use it only after reinstalling the mod and unequipping the item has failed.

Fix a blank mod.io menu
A blank Ready or Not mod menu is commonly associated with an invalid mod.io session ID, including after an account or profile change. Reset the local session file and sign in again.
- Exit Ready or Not.
- Open the Windows Run dialog or File Explorer and enter
%localappdata%. - Locate the mod.io folder and its game-ID subfolders.
- Find the file named
user.json. - Rename it to
user.json.BAK. Renaming preserves a copy you can restore if needed. - Restart Ready or Not.
- Open the mod menu and complete authentication again.
If the menu returns, the old session file was the problem. If it remains blank, close the game before trying another reset and check that you are signing into the intended account or profile.
Remove, replace, and roll back mods cleanly
Manual packages
Use the filename in your inventory to delete only the package you installed. Keep the original archive until the replacement has been tested. If the new version fails, restore the previous archive and filename rather than downloading an unrelated replacement.

Vortex-managed packages
Disable the mod in Vortex first, then deploy the changed state. Confirm that the package no longer appears in the deployed game-mods folder. Deleting files directly can leave Vortex’s record out of sync and make later deployment misleading.
mod.io packages
Use the mod.io menu to unsubscribe or remove the package, then inspect the active folders only if the content continues to load. A manual or Vortex copy of the same package may be the reason it remains active.
Compatibility checklist before adding a new mod
- Does the description explicitly identify Ready or Not?
- Does it state compatibility with your current game build?
- Is the payload a valid
.pak, or does it require additional files and a specific manager? - Does it modify maps, global AI parameters, weapons, loadouts, configuration, or save data?
- Does it require Unreal Engine Mod Installer or another dependency?
- Are you already running a mod that changes the same system?
- Can you identify the exact files to remove if the package fails?
Which method should you use?
Choose in-game mod.io when convenience and reversible subscription-style management matter most. Choose manual installation when you need to see every file, test a package outside the catalog, or keep a tightly controlled collection. Choose Vortex when you routinely enable and disable many packages or need its deployment and load-order interface.
Whichever method you choose, the operational rule is the same: keep one source of truth for what is installed, avoid duplicate copies across mod.io, ~mods, and the main Paks folder, and test changes one at a time. That practice makes updates, removals, and crash recovery predictable.
