Support is not universal: the option may be unavailable on some models or blocked on school- and work-managed devices, and individual apps may not support your Chromebook.
Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
Google Play is available on only some Chromebooks. Open Settings > Apps and look for Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. On a school or work device, an administrator may also block Play Store access. See Google’s Chromebook app installation and management guidance.
Play Store support does not guarantee that every Android app will install. Developers can restrict availability on Chromebooks, and an app may require hardware your model lacks. Google gives GPS as an example: an app requiring GPS may be unavailable on a Chromebook without it. Check Google Play’s Chromebook download troubleshooting guide if an app is missing or marked incompatible.
Install an Android app
- Install pending ChromeOS updates. Updates can be checked in Chromebook Settings before you set up Play Store.
- Open Play Store preferences. Select the time and status area, then go to Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- Complete setup. Follow the prompts and accept Google Play’s terms. If the setting is missing or setup is blocked, check model support or ask the school or work administrator whether installation is allowed.
- Install the app. Open Play Store, find the app by searching or browsing, and select Install.
- Open it from the Launcher. Installed apps appear in the Launcher. Apps on your phone or tablet do not automatically install on the Chromebook.
Use the account that should own Play Store access
Google says Play Store content and apps are available only to the account that first signed in. If you set it up with the wrong account, Google’s documented remedy is to sign out of the accounts and sign in with the account that should use the apps.

Update apps and control permissions
Update installed apps
Select Update or Update all when an update notification appears. If there is no notification, open Play Store from the Launcher and use its update controls. Google also documents an option for automatic app and Play Store updates.
Review app permissions
To review Android app access, open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences > Android settings > Apps & notifications > Permission manager. Choose a permission category, then allow or deny access for the listed apps. Location can be controlled in Android preferences generally or in an individual app’s permissions. A school or work administrator may prevent changes to some location controls.

Understand file and privacy behavior
When permitted, Android apps can read and write files in the Chromebook’s Downloads location. A link opened from an app during private browsing may open in a regular browser tab. Google may receive usage, diagnostic, or crash information depending on your ChromeOS reporting choices and Play Store opt-in. Turning off Google Play on the Chromebook erases Android app data and settings stored on that device.
Set backup, restore, and app syncing
Google says Android app data backup and restore is on by default. You can switch Back up my data on or off in Android preferences. App syncing across Chromebooks is also on by default, with an Apps sync setting available.

Find, organize, and configure apps
Search for an app from the Launcher using the Search or Launcher key. ChromeOS lets you move apps, group them into folders, sort by name or color, and configure notifications. For supported links, go to Settings > Apps > Manage your apps, select an app, and choose whether its supported links open in the app or in Chrome. More details are in Google’s guide to finding and organizing Chromebook apps.

Uninstall an app or turn off Google Play
Remove one app
Find the app in the Launcher, right-click its icon, choose Uninstall or Remove from Chrome, and confirm. Google’s general app guidance also describes removing an app from its icon’s context menu.
Turn off Google Play
Turning off Google Play is different from uninstalling one app: it removes Android app data and settings from the Chromebook. Use this only if you are prepared to lose that device-stored Android app data.

Troubleshoot common installation problems
Play Store will not open
Google’s basic sequence is to restart the Chromebook, check the internet connection, and install current ChromeOS updates.
The Play Store option is missing or blocked
If Manage Google Play preferences is absent under Settings > Apps, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. On a work or school Chromebook, contact the administrator; organizational policy may prevent adding Play Store or downloading Android apps.
An app is unavailable or incompatible
Check whether the developer supports Chromebooks and whether your specific model has the app’s required hardware. An app that needs GPS, for example, may not be available on a Chromebook without GPS. An unavailable app does not, by itself, mean Play Store is malfunctioning.
Family and school or work controls
Child accounts and Family Link
For a child using a personal Chromebook with a Family Link-managed Google Account, Google documents a flow in which the child requests parent approval from Play Store or asks for in-person approval. The approval instructions specify ChromeOS 83 or later; Google’s page is Approve your child’s apps and extensions on Chromebook. In the documented flow, a parent does not need to approve app removal.
School and work deployments
Administrators can limit which apps users install, deploy selected apps automatically, or remove apps. For school deployments, Google notes that Android apps use local device storage, a consideration on shared Chromebooks. Its deployment guidance recommends testing apps on a small number of managed Chromebooks before expanding rollout: Guidelines for deploying Android apps on Chromebooks.
