The safest way to mod Starfield is to make one controlled change at a time, preserve an unmodded save, and keep a recoverable load-order archive. On Xbox, use the in-game Creations catalog. On PC, you can use Creations or the documented Nexus Mods extension for Vortex 1.9.10 or newer. Whichever route you choose, read every mod’s requirements, keep ESM and ESL files above ESP files, and fully quit and relaunch the game after changing your list.

Modding can affect save files, achievements, installation folders and stability. The procedure below separates those risks so you can identify a bad add-on without rebuilding your entire setup.

What “safe” Starfield modding actually means

Safety is a recovery plan, not a guarantee that every Creation or community mod will work together. A safe setup gives you three ways back: a clean character save made before modding, a saved copy of your load order, and a small enough change set that you know what caused a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Protect the original save. Starfield Unity documents that a non-achievement-friendly Creation creates a [C] save fork and disables achievements on that fork. Keep the pre-mod character untouched so you can return to it.
  • Preserve the load order. The in-game archive can be saved to Bethesda.net and restored later, but restoration works only when an archive already exists and the correct Bethesda.net account is active.
  • Control variables. Install or enable a single Creation, or a small related group, then test before adding anything else.
  • Respect dependencies. A mod can require another file, a patch, a particular location, or a new game/NG+ start. Those instructions take precedence over a general ordering rule.

Bethesda’s own support warning is direct: “Play with Creations at your own risk. You may experience issues with Creations.” Treat that warning as a reason to maintain backups and a rollback path, not as a reason to avoid all modding.

Choose an installation route by platform

Platform and route How files are installed Control you get Main risks to plan for
Xbox Series consoles Install official add-ons from the in-game Creations menu. The catalog handles deployment; use the built-in load-order screen and archive. Creations can affect saves and achievements, and a broken list may require clearing Reserved Space, which deletes downloaded Creations.
PC with Creations Use the in-game Creations menu, just as on console. Built-in enable, disable, delete and load-order controls. Creations can cause crashes or other in-game issues; retain a clean save and archive.
PC with Nexus Mods and Vortex Install the Starfield extension in Vortex, then deploy downloaded files. Vortex detects Steam and Xbox installations, manages the secondary Data folder and handles load-order deployment. Loose-file INI settings, folder junctions, cloud-synced folders and locked Game Pass directories can interfere with deployment.
PC Game Pass installation Use Creations or Vortex where the installation permissions allow it. Vortex can detect Xbox installations, but the protected WindowsApps location limits access. An external Xbox installation location such as C:XboxGames may be necessary.

Do not mix management methods casually. If you install a group through Vortex and then make substantial changes in Creations, record the resulting order and test from a fully closed game. A single manager path is easier to diagnose.

Prepare Starfield before installing anything

1. Make a clean save

Launch the unmodded game, load the character you intend to use and create a manual save in a recognizable slot. Do not overwrite it after installing a Creation that is not achievement-friendly. If the mod creates a [C] save fork, the clean save remains your exit route.

2. Record the current load order

Open Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive and choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net. Confirm that the archive is associated with the Bethesda.net account you will use for restoration. This archive is separate from a character save and should be made before experimentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Read the complete mod description

Before pressing Install, look for required master files, optional patches, incompatible Creations, location restrictions, and instructions about starting a new game or NG+. A compatibility patch normally belongs after every mod it patches. If an author supplies a placement instruction inside an ESM, ESL or ESP group, follow that instruction.

4. Confirm storage and permissions

For PC, keep the game on an SSD as part of Bethesda’s crash checklist. Ensure your account can write to the game and Starfield data directories. Cloud-synced folders such as OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox can make Vortex folder junctions inconsistent and, in severe cases, cause data loss; avoid putting the managed Starfield data folder under those synchronization locations.

5. Plan a test cycle

Choose a repeatable area of the game where you can check the change, then decide what “working” means before adding another mod. Testing after each change makes it possible to disable the newest item instead of dismantling the entire list.

Install Creations safely

Step 1: Open the catalog and inspect the entry

From Starfield’s main menu, open Creations. Read the description, requirements and compatibility notes. Check whether the item is intended for a new game or NG+, whether it changes a specific location, and whether a listed patch must be installed after it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Install one item or one known-compatible set

Install the Creation, or a tightly related set whose author explicitly documents compatibility. Avoid changing unrelated files in the same session. When the download completes, confirm that the item appears in your library and in the load-order screen.

Step 3: Place it according to file type and author guidance

Use the ordering rules in the next section. Do not force an ESP above an ESM or ESL because a menu entry appears to work there; the game’s master-file rules are structural.

Step 4: Save the updated archive

After a known-good change, return to Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive and use Save Load Order to Bethesda.net again. Saving a new archive gives you a restore point that matches the current list.

Step 5: Fully quit and relaunch

Exit Starfield completely rather than relying on Xbox Quick Resume or leaving the PC process suspended. A clean relaunch can clear stale-load texture symptoms and ensures the game reads the new order from a fresh start.

Step 6: Test before expanding the list

Load the test save, visit the affected area or use the affected feature, and play long enough to expose an immediate conflict. If the game is stable, make the next change separately. If it is not, disable the newest Creation first and repeat the test.

Install PC mods with Vortex

Prerequisites and detection

The documented Nexus Mods Starfield extension requires Vortex 1.9.10 or newer. Install that version, add the Starfield extension, and allow Vortex to detect your Steam or Xbox installation. Vortex can deploy files and manage Starfield’s secondary data directory at DocumentsMy GamesStarfieldData.

Use deployment instead of manual file scattering

Keep downloaded archives in Vortex and use its deployment function so the manager can track what each mod installed. Manual copying into several folders makes removal and conflict diagnosis harder. Review the deployment notification for errors before launching the game.

Handle loose files and INI settings

Some Starfield mods use loose files rather than plugin-only files. Those mods may require these values in StarfieldCustom.ini:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

Vortex can detect and adjust those values, but other INI instructions in an individual mod’s documentation may still require manual editing. Make only the edits the mod author requests, and keep a backup of the original INI file so you can revert a setting that causes instability.

Watch for folder-junction limitations

Vortex’s junction approach can simplify the two Starfield Data locations, but the Nexus documentation warns that OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox may break junction consistency. Severe synchronization conflicts can result in data loss. Keep the managed folders local and unsynchronized, and do not move a junction target while Vortex is deploying.

Account for Game Pass permissions

Game Pass installations inside the locked WindowsApps directory have limited access. If Vortex cannot read or deploy to that location, an external installation location such as C:XboxGames may be needed. Resolve the permission and location problem before troubleshooting a mod itself; a deployment that never reached the game cannot be fixed by load-order changes.

Understand Starfield’s load-order rules

Bethesda’s support rule divides plugin files into three groups. Keep the groups in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Position File type What it means Ordering instruction
1 ESM master files Full master files that other plugins may depend on. Keep at the top of the list.
2 ESL light master files Light master files designed for a smaller plugin footprint. Place after ESM files and before ESP files.
3 ESP files Standard plugin files. Place below ESM and ESL files.

ESM and ESL files cannot be moved below ESP files. Within each group, follow the mod author’s placement instructions. Put a compatibility patch after all of the mods it patches so the patch can overwrite or reconcile their records. If an author’s order conflicts with a guess based on file names, use the documented order and investigate the conflict rather than randomly moving plugins.

Archive and restore the order

To create a recovery point, use Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive > Save Load Order to Bethesda.net. To recover, return to the same screen and choose Restore Load Order from Bethesda.net. Bethesda says restoration works only if an archive was previously saved and the correct Bethesda.net account is active. A restore does not replace the need for clean character saves; it changes the list, not the history already written into a save.

Save files, achievements and new-game requirements

Achievement impact

Starfield Unity documents that a non-achievement-friendly Creation makes a [C] save fork and disables achievements on that fork. The original pre-mod save remains important even if you later delete the Creation, because simply removing a mod does not turn an already forked save back into an achievement-enabled save.

New game and NG+ instructions

Some Creations are designed around a new game or a New Game Plus start. If the description recommends one, treat that as a compatibility requirement rather than an optional preference. Installing it into an established character can leave quests, locations or scripts in a state the author did not support.

Why keeping a clean character matters

A clean save lets you distinguish a mod problem from a save that already contains changed records. Make the clean save before the first install, keep it in a clearly named slot, and do not use it as the routine save for a heavily modded playthrough.

Troubleshoot downloads and the Creations menu

PC cannot download or access Creations

First check Bethesda.net service status. Then try a wired network connection, reboot the modem and router, and allow Starfield and Steam or the Xbox App through your antivirus. If your router requires explicit rules, Bethesda lists TCP ports 80 and 443 and UDP ports 3000–3010 for the relevant services. Apply network changes cautiously and remove temporary rules that are no longer needed.

PC Creations menu is stuck

  1. Exit Starfield completely.
  2. Back up C:Users%username%AppDataLocalStarfieldContentCatalog.txt to another folder.
  3. Delete the original ContentCatalog.txt.
  4. Restart Starfield and allow the catalog to rebuild.

Backing up the file first gives you a copy to restore if rebuilding does not resolve the issue.

Xbox Creations menu is stuck

Clear Starfield’s Reserved Space from the Xbox storage management screen. Bethesda says this deletes downloaded Creations, so use it only after accepting that you will need to download the catalog items again. Your clean character save and any load-order archive remain separate recovery assets.

Troubleshoot crashes, missing assets and instability

Start with the newest change

If a crash begins immediately after installing or enabling a Creation, disable or remove that recent item first. Do not add another mod to “patch over” an untested failure. Relaunch fully after the change and test the same scenario.

Check the base installation

Bethesda’s crash guidance includes verifying that Starfield is installed on an SSD, updating GPU drivers, repairing game files and adding Starfield to antivirus exclusions. These checks matter even when a Creation appears to be the trigger, because a damaged base file or blocked executable can produce similar symptoms.

Reduce the list methodically

  1. Disable the most recently added Creation or plugin.
  2. Fully quit and relaunch Starfield.
  3. Repeat the test that caused the crash.
  4. If the crash persists, disable the next most recent change and test again.
  5. Once stability returns, re-enable items one at a time to identify the conflict.

Keep notes about each test, including the order, save used and location where the crash occurred. This prevents repeatedly testing the same combination and helps you follow an author’s compatibility instructions.

Stale textures after a load-order change

Close Starfield instead of using Quick Resume, then launch it again after changing Creations or the load order. A clean process restart can clear stale-load texture symptoms that remain when the game is merely resumed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable or uninstall a Creation

In the in-game Creations menu, open Library, select the item and choose Delete. The menu also offers a disable option. Disabling is useful for a controlled test; deleting removes the downloaded item and is appropriate when you are certain it is no longer part of the setup.

Before removing a Creation from an active character, read its description for uninstall instructions. A plugin can have already written objects or quest data into a save. If instability began after installation, prefer the clean pre-mod save or a save made before that Creation was enabled rather than assuming deletion alone repairs every change.

A repeatable maintenance routine

  • Before a change: keep the clean character, read requirements, and save the current load-order archive.
  • During installation: make one controlled change, confirm deployment or download completion, and place the file according to ESM/ESL/ESP rules.
  • After installation: fully quit and relaunch, then test the affected feature before adding anything else.
  • When stable: save a new load-order archive so the recovery point matches the tested list.
  • When unstable: disable the newest change, repair the base game and check drivers, storage and antivirus before rebuilding the list.
  • When switching platforms: treat Xbox Creations, PC Creations and Vortex deployments as separate setups; do not assume a PC load order or file layout transfers directly to Xbox.

Safety checklist before you play

  • A clean, pre-mod character save is stored separately.
  • The current load order is archived through Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive.
  • Every mod’s dependencies, patches, placement rules and new-game or NG+ requirements have been read.
  • ESM files are above ESL files, and ESL files are above ESP files.
  • Any loose-file mod’s required StarfieldCustom.ini values are present, with the original INI backed up.
  • Vortex is version 1.9.10 or newer when using its Starfield extension.
  • Game files are on an SSD, drivers are current, and antivirus is not blocking Starfield or the manager.
  • The game has been fully quit and relaunched after the last order change.
